HUNTINGTON, IND.,

The county seat of Huntington county is an important, go ahead, commercial and manufacturing city of 6000 inhabi- tants, located on the Wabash river, and main line of the Wabash, St. Louis & Pacific and Chicago & Atlantic R'ys. the last mentioned road have erected large repair shops and round houses at this point, making it the division terminus between Chicago & Marion, Ohio. It is 142 miles east of Chicago, on the C & A R'y, 118 miles south-east of Toledo, 105 miles north-east of Indianapolis, 318 miles east of St. Louis, and 24 miles west of Fort Wayne, on the Wabash Ry.

This place was first settled in 1833, by Gen. John Tipton, and was then at that time one of the principal camping grounds of the Wabash Valley. Huntington is one of the most attractive and progressive towns in northern Indiana, and has increased in population and wealth rapidly in the last few years, owing to the building of the Chicago & Atlantic R'y and the introduction of new manufacturing enterprises, among the last mentioned industries is the Eagle Foundry and Machine Works, on the corner of Wash- ington and Cherry streets, and is now operated by Mr. E. K. Clayton, formerly foreman for 14 years of the Lake Erie & Western Railway shops, at Lima, Ohio, and who has had a life long experience in this business. The works are the most extensive in the city, furnishing employment to 25 men when

running full capacity; they make steam engines, boilers, iron fronts, castings of every description, pay special atten- tion to forging and general repair work.

Mr. C. Nietert, manufacturer and dealer in fine cigars, employs four to five hands, and his goods are well known to the trade.

Slack & Ayres, manufacturers and dealers in lumber, lath and shingles, have a very large establishment, working twenty hands. They make a specialty of interior wood decorations and house furnishing materials.

Jacob Speaker, manufactures a very superior article of Ginger ale and carbonated beverages for the city trade.

The Huntington Foundry and Machine Work under the management of Dorn & Gemmer, is now running to its full capacity, working 15 hands. This firm manufactures the celebrated "Huntington Plow."

Mr. Geo. Herrberg, prop of the "Star Bottling Works," is making arrangements to erect a more extensive building this coming season to accommodate his fast increasing busi- ness.

Mr. W. I. Campbell is one of the oldest manufacturees and wholesale dealers in cigars in the city. Among the many popular brands of cigars manufactured by Mr. O, is the "Sweepstake" and is said to be, by competent judges, the best 10c cigar in the market.

A large number of neat, cozy dwellings and substantial business houses have been erected last season; among the latter is the New Windsor Hotel, owned and operated by Mr. M. W. Milligan. This hotel is the finest building in the city, and is furnished with all the modern conveniences.

The town is governed by a Mayor and Common Council, is lighted by gas and has good water works, Opera House, Fire Department, two graded schools, several very hand- some churches and excellent city and county buildings, three hotels, two banks and four newspapers, -- two dailies and two weeklies. In addition to manufacturing interest already ennumerated, it has six saw mills, a potash factory, three planing mills, one pump factory, four flouring mills, two furniture factories, handle factory, cooper shop, a bent wood and spoke factory, wooden stirrup factory and several large grain elevators. Pacific and United States Express, Telephone Exchange, Western Union Telegraph. Alex. W. DeLong, Postmaster.
