FORT WAYNE.
The city of Fort Wayne is pleasantly situated at the head of the Maumee river, and on the St. Joseph, at its con- fluence with the St. Mary's river, the county seat of Allen county, with a population of 35,000, that is being rapidly augmented every day by the introduction of some new man- ufacturing enterprise, or the enlargement of some of the many institutions that are already established and enjoying a prosperous business, making Fort Wayne rank as the second city in the State in point of manufacture and com- merce. A moment's investigation of the many industries that furnish employment to thousands of hands, will con- vince the most casual observer that FORT WAYNE has indeed been fortunate in securing, what western towns stand so badly in need of-RAILROADS and FACTORIES, among the lat- ter the most prominent are: THE BASS FOUNDRY & MACHINE WORKS, THE PETERS' BOX AND LUMBER CO., THE CENTLIVRE BREWERY, FLEMING MANUFACTURING Co., HOFFMAN BROS.' S. PENNOCK, SONS & CO., THE FORT WAYNE JENNEY ELEC- TRIC LIGHT CO., C. S. OLDS & Co., and many others.
THE BASS FOUNDRY AND MACHINE WORKS was establish- ed in 1853, incorporated twenty years later, turns out more car wheels than any other concern in the United States, fur- nishing employment to a regiment of men, and in addition they do an extensive business in the manufacture of engine boilers, steam engines, railroad castings, mill and heavy machinery of every description.
THE PETERS' BOX AND LUMBER COMPANY have only been in business a few years, having commenced in 1870, on a small scale, and to-day, under the direction of Mr. Charles Pape, who is President and General Manager, it has grown to be one of the solid institutions of the city, and the many articles of their manufacture including tobacco pails, refriger- ators, packing boxes, sash, doors and blinds, chair stock and furniture, can be found in every principal city in the Union.
Seven brewing establishments have been started since '62, when the Centlivre Brewery was put into operation, on north Spring Run Avenue, and it stands to-day without a rival. Owing to the growing popularity of the "French Brewery" beverages, the facilities of his already large estab- lishment have been taxed to their utmost capacity, Mr. Centlivre proposes to make additional improvement that will double the capacity and enable him to produce twenty- five to thirty thousand barrels per year.
THE OLDS WAGON WORKS are located here and are among the largest manufacturers of wagons and wagon wheels in the United States. When running full force they em- ploy from eight hundred to a thousand men.
S. PENNOCK SONS & Co., the well known manufacturers of the PENNOCK ROAD MACHINE, of Kennett Square, Penn., have established a western branch at 358 Calhoun street. . They report a large and satisfactory increase in their business. Space forbids further enumeration, and we refer our readers to "Incorporated Institutions" on page 55.
Among the many important improvements to take place this season, is the completion of the Grand Opera House, and erection of a new hotel. The old Mayer House will be razed to the ground and a new and stately edifice, embracing all the modern improvements and conveniences, will be erected, that will cost a round hundred thousand dollars, furnishing accommodation for 125 guests. Mr. George J. E. Mayer will do justice to the work in hand, and will sustain his reputa- tion as a popular and successful caterer to the public.
The railroad transportation facilities of Fort Wayne are second to none in the State, being traversed by six roads. Situated on the main line of the Wabash, St. Louis & Pacific R'y, that has nearly ten thousand miles of railroad under control, gives it an unbroken connection with all western roads. The Pittsburgh, Ft. Wayne & Chicago are · next in importance, and have located entensive repair shops here and are now erecting buildings preparatory to permanent- ly placing their large car and machine shops at this point. The Grand Rapids & Indiana with leased lines, popularly known as the "Fishing Line," is the most important north and south railroad in the State. The Ft. Wavne, Cincinnati & Louisville road makes this the northern terminus and have erected repair shops and general offices. The Lake Shore & Michigan Southern are now operating the old Fort Wayne & Saginaw, making this the southern terminus. The New York, Chi- cago & St. Louis is the latest addition, and their elegant buildings for the accommodation of passenger and freight traffic are located within two squares of the court house.
Fort Wayne possesses the most excellent educational facilities in all branches. A large number of beautiful churches are scattered throughout the city, representing all the popular ecclesiastical denominations.
The press is brought into prominence by five dailies : Gazette, Sentinel, Journal, Staats Zeitung, and News, and . eight weekly papers: Journal, Gazette, Sentinel, News, Staats Zeitung, Mail, and Indiana Hoosier.
As a city, Fort Wayne is well supplied with clean, broad streets, and the business houses and residences are com- pactly constructed in the latest styles of modern architecture. Has gas, electric lights, telephone exchange, water works. well-organized fire departments, several miles of street railway, good county buildings, twenty hotels, two private and three National Banks, W. U. Telegraph, Adams, Amer- ican, U. S., and Pacific Express offices, P. W. Keil, P. M.
