CITY OF DECATUR. 179

DECATUR, IND.,

The county seat of Adams county. is pleasantly located on the St. Mary's river at the crossing of the Toledo, Cincinnati & St. Louis, the Chicago & Atlantic. and Grand Rapids & Indiana R'ys, 21 miles south of Fort Wayne, 172 miles east of Chicago, and 138 miles north-east of the capital city, contains 2500 inhabitants, a number of good business blocks, substantial county buildings, several churches, two good graded schools, two banks, two newspapers, Democrat and Journal, and two hotels, among the last mentioned is the well-known Burt house, Dick C. Townsand, proprietor, under whose management this house now ranks as one of the best hotels in northern Indiana.

Among the manufacturing industries of the town, are three stave factories, two saw mills, one foundry, and the City Flour Mills, J. S. Hart, proprietor, this mill has a capacity of sixty barrels of flour per day, and has been in operation eight years. The leading brand of their man- ufacture is "Gold Dust." P. C. Clevenger & Co., manufac- turers of staves and headings, have rebuilt and refurnished with the latest improved machinery their large factory that was totally destroyed by fire last fall, and are now running full capacity, employing fifty hands and turning out millions of staves annually.

Surrounded as it is with a fertile and productive county, combined with its local industries makes Decatur a desira- ble commercial point. The principal exports are lumber, staves, grain, produce and live stock. American and United States Express. W. U. Telegraph Co. Benj. W. Sholty, Postmaster.
