CITY OF PORTLAND.

PORTLAND, IND.,

Is located at the crossing of the Grand Rapids & Indiana and Lake Erie & Western Rys, 110 miles northeast of In- dianapolis, and 49 miles south of Fort Wayne. It is one of the most substantially constructed towns in the the State, the majority of the business blocks are built of stone or brick with plate glass fronts, and furnished with all the latest improvements, it also has many handsome residences and good public buildings. A new opera house, seating 1400, and a number of new buildings are under construction and will be completed this season. It has much private wealth and the citizens try to excel in the improvement of their prop- erty and business.

Portland is a progressive manufacturing town, its location affords excellent transportation facilities and offers special inducements to manufacturers seeking a location. Among its mills, factories, etc, it has two flour mills, the Centen- nial and Monitor, both do a good business and make an excellent quality of flour; two stave and heading factories; two saw mills; one furniture factory; one foundry; one spoke and handle factory; one planing mill and carriage top attachment manufacturing company, the latter is a new en- terprise and is already doing an extensive business.

It supports several churches; two banks, the Citizens and Peoples, the former was organized 1875, and is one of the solid institutions of the city, J. B. Jaqua, the cashier, Las long been identified with the interests of the town; two hotels, the Merchant and the New Hawkins, the latter is cen- trally located on Main street and is one of the best appointed houses in the State; two weekly newspapers, The Portland Sun and Commercial.

Portland is situated in the midst of a very fertile agricul- tural district and its trade extends for a radius of twenty miles. Messrs. Kirchbaum & Silvernale, the leading dry goods merchants, have just completed the remodeling of their mammoth establishment, located on the corner of Main and Meridian streets, the store proper occupies three floors, furnished with all the modern improvements for the comfort of their many patrons, and pleasing exhibition of the largest stock of retail dry goods in northern Indiana. The citizens of Portland may well be proud of this model of metropolitan neatness and elegance.

Grain, live stock, lumber and produce are the principal exports. Telephone Exchange. Western Union Telegraph. U. S. Express. Nimrod Headington, Postmaster.
