Is an incorporated city of 3000 inhabitants, county seat of Wells county, and is located on the Wabash river, at the crossing of the Fort Wayne, Cincinnati & Louisville, Chi- cago & Alantic, and Toledo, Cincinnati & St Louis Railways, 25 miles south of Fort Wayne, and 120 miles north-east of Indianapolis. The surrounding agricultural district is one of the most productive in Northern Indiana. This city has made rapid improvements in commerce and manufacturing in the past few years, and several new business blocks and an elegant hotel are under course of construction, the last named building will be known as the Bliss House and is fitted up with all the modern improvements for the accom- modation of the public.
Prominently among the manufacturing interests is the extensive Bending Works of J. H. Smith & Co., furnish employment to 60 hands the year around and have lately increased their facilities in order to meet the demands of their fast increasing trade. J. North & Bro., commenced business in 1871, and do an extensive trade in manufac- turing lumber and all kinds of building material. This firm employs 15 men. The usual quota of smaller industries are well represented.
The town supports three hotels, one bank, three news- papers, a large graded school, and five churches. Its assessed value of real and personal property is over $1,000,000, and the town is enjoying a boom. Grain, lumber, and live stock comprises its principal shipments. U. S., and American Express. A thriving incorporated town of 2000 inhabitants, located at the crossing of the Air Line division of L. S. & M. S. Ry and Eel River division of W. St. & P. Ry. in Wilmington township. DeKalb county, and is twelve miles north-east of Auburn, the seat of Justice.
This town is rapidly increasing in population, and man- utacturing interests. The surrounding agricultural district is exceedingly fertile and the principal products raised is grain and comprises its principal exports.
A number of new buildings have lately been erected, and a number more will be constructed this coming season. The town supports a good graded school, three churches, three hotels, one bank, and two weekly newspapers- Review and Record, the last mentioned is published by W. F. Garrison, and is one of the leading journals of the county, with a rapidly increasing sub- scription list it commends itself to the advertiser as a medium worthy of patronage. A few of the prominent manufacturing interests is a flouring mill, two saw mills, a handle factory, and the usual number of smaller industries. American and Pacific Express, W. U. Telegraph.
