MASSACHUSETTS CAVALRY.
FIRST REGIMENT.
(The companies of this regiment from A to H, inclusive, were organ- ized at Readville. Mass., from September 5, 1861, to November 1, 1861, for three years. Companies I, K, L, and M, of the original organization, were detached Au- gust 4, 1863, to form an independent battalion of cavalry, to which eight new companies were added Febru- ary 12, 1864, forming the 4th Massa- chusetts cavalry. Four new com- panies were raised from December 5, 1863, to January 14, 1864, to take the place of the transferred com- panies. The original members were mustered out, and the veterans and recruits consolidated into eight com- panies October 24, 1864. They re- mained in service until June 29, 1865, when mustered out in accord- ance with orders from the War De- partment.)

(This regiment, with the exception of companies I. L, and M, was organ- ized as the 41st infantry, at Box- ford and Lynnfield. Mass., fromn August 31, 1862, to November 1, 1862, to serve three years. Its designation was changed to the 3d cavalry, in accordance with or- ders from the War Department of July 22, 1863. Company A, 33d Massachusetts, organized at Bos- ton, Mass., August 6, 1862, to serve three years, was assigned to this regiment as company I. Companies A and B, battalion 2d Massachu- setts cavalry, unattached, Gulf squadron, organized at Lowell, Mass., December 27, 1861, to serve three years, and assigned to this regiment as company M. Company C, battalion 2d Massachusetts cav- alry, unattached, Gulf squadron, organized at Lowell, Mass., De- cember 6. 1861, to serve three years, and assigned to this regiment as company L. Company L was mustered out December 27, 1864, and company M January 31, 1865. Two new companies were ·organ- ized at Readville, Mass., February, 1865, to serve one year, and as- signed to this regiment as compa- nies L and M. FOURTH REGIMENT.
(This regiment was organized at Readville, Mass., to serve three years, as follows : Companies I to M. inclusive, from October 23. 1861. to November 19, 1861, and compa- nies A to H inclusive from Deeem- ber 26, 1863. to February 8, 1864. Companies I. K. L. and M were de- tached from the 1st Massachusetts cavalry as a battalion August 4, 1863, aud formed part of the 4th eavalry at its organization. On the expiration of the term of service of companies I, K, L, and M, the orig- inal members (except veterans) were mustered out, and the vet- erans and recruits retained with the organization, which is still in ser- vice.)

The original members were mustered out of service as their terms expired, and the remaining members retained in service until August 16, 1865, when they were mustered out in accordance with orders from the War Department.)
