FIRST REGIMENT. BATTALION OF
(This regiment was organized at Prov- idence, R. I., from December 14, 1861, to March 3, 1862, for three years. Four companies (I, K, L, and M) were permanently detached to serve as a battalion New Hamp- shire cavalry January 7, 1864. On the expiration of its term of service the original members (except veter- ans) were mustercd out, and the organization, composed of veterans and recruits, consolidated into a battalion of four companies in Jan- uary, 1865, and retained in service until August 3, 1865, when it was mustercd out, in accordance with orders from the War Department.)
