Report of Water Commissioners
During the past year the extension of the water main was completed on South Street, of 2,250 feet of 6 inch pipe with (2) two hydrants installed on the line. This will be a great help in case of fire on the lower end of South Street.
This past summer it was the driest on record. With very little rainfall during the months of July, August and September. We feel that the water in the upper reser- voir held up surprisingly well. The lowest level was about 28 inches below the over-flow at the upper reservoir. Restrictions were placed on the use of water August 31, 1948. With the fine cooperation of the townspeople, this town did not suffer for the lack of water.
We wish to call to your attention the condition of the service connections from the main pipe line to the homes. These connections are all in a very bad condi- tion, due to the filling up with rust, and leaks. A few of these have been replaced this past year. In the very near future they will all have to be replaced. Leaks throughout the system are occuring more each year.
Work was started last winter on the fire roads on our water shed, which we feel was very necessary and hope to do more each year until they are in good condition.
The lower reservoir was cleaned throughly and the screens at the gatehouse were repaired.
The brush around and in between the two reservoirs was cut and cleaned up as far as the money would let us.
45
Members of the board are aware of the silt condition in the upper reservoir, due to the fact that when the re- servoir was built there were no provisions made to clean the upper reservoir. We feel the expense would be very large for what small amount more of storage would be gained.
An electric pump was installed in the chlorinator building to eliminate seepage of surface water in the building.
We wish to again express our appreciation to the Selectmen and the Highway Department for their fine cooperation this past year.
ROBERT WELLS,
EDWARD BEATTIE, FRANK PRINGLE,
Water Commissioners.

Report of the Recreation Commission
Your Recreation Commission has managed to keep it- self busy the past year. The baseball field in Haydenville has been improved to a point where the townspeople can be proud of it. Mr. Merrill Parrow who has spent much time with this project deserves a great deal of credit for the ex- cellent condition of the field. Baseball is a favorite sport in this town and the diamond saw plenty of use this past season.
Basketball receives its share of support from your Commission. The young boy's team in Haydenville, under the expert coaching of Miss Trainor, has done well. The Town, through its Commission has furnished this team with necesary equipment, even to warn-up shirts. The boy' and girl's teams of Williamsburg have been practicing under their respective coaches, and we hope that another year will find their teams competing with out-of-town teams. The crying need here is proper playing surfaces located in a properly equipped gymnasium.
The matter of skating rinks has been a constant sub- ject of discussion. The Commission had hoped to con- struct some facility for skating in both precincts but thus far has not had the funds available to go ahead with this project.
Your Commission has represented the town at meet- ings of the Western Massachusetts Recreation Association. Each meeting has given added stimulus to "recreation for Williamburg." We believe that there is a need for or-
56
ganized recreation in our town and hope that this goal can be reached.
The Recreation Hall in Haydenville was sold to the American Legion Post this past year and thus our duties relative to that building were concluded. However, pre- vious to the sale the townspeople made full use of facilities offered there, and we are sure that the Legion will con- tinue to permit the use of this hall for recreational pur- poses.
The coming year calls for a concentrated effort along these major fields of sport, baseball, basketball and ska. ting. Our hopes are high for some real accomplishment- another report will supply the answer.
And in the manner of a postscript we add the follow-
