Report of Water Commissioners

During the past year the extensions of water mains were completed on Petticoat Hill Road and Nash Street. We laid 770 feet of 6 inch Transite pipe on Petticoat Hill Road and on this line we have five new installations and two new hydrants. On Nash Street we laid 180 feet of 4 inch cast iron pipe. This was pipe that we had on hand, and we made one new installation on this line. On the other mains we made twelve new installations. We dug up and replaced six old installations and also replaced several curb boxes. We also checked and recaulked all the hydrants in both Villages and replaced one four inch hydrant.

This past summer was the driest on record with very little rainfall during the whole summer. Restrictions were placed on the use of water during the summer and with the cooperation of the townspeople we were able to get by without pumping from the Ashfield Stream.

We finished cutting brush on the fire lane and finished the brush that was left in years gone by. We also dug out quite a few springs which helped the water supply. This coming year we will have two new bridges so that we will be able to get to thefire lanes from both ways. We also installed a new stove in the chlorinator which was badly needed.

Every effort is to be made this coming year to collect delinquent water accounts. The cooperation of anyone in arrears is requested and will facilitate the work of collection of water rents.

48

The Water Commissioners wish to call attention to a very serious practice indulged in by a few users of the water supply, namely, the installation of new plumbing fixtures without notifying the Water Commissioners. This practice is very unfair to the other users who are paying for all privileges for which the water system was installed.

At the request of a committee of the Taxpayers" Association a survey was made to see if any improve- ment could be made in the volume of water in the village of Haydenville. All valves were checked and two were found to be partly shut. Tests made afterwards with a representative from the Insurance Underwriters showed that the flow and pressure was substantially the same as those taken previously over a period of ten years. All tests made indicated that the main from the reservoir to Haydenville is too small and extended to satisfactorily supply both villages with adequate fire protection.

Serious consideration should be given to this fact by all property owners concerned and a remedy should be included in any long range planning.

Our Chairman moved from Town and resigned in December 1949. His duties as Chairman and Collector of Water Rents were taken over by Charles Sabo.

We express our appreciation at this time to the Selectmen and townspeople for their cooperation and espe- cially to the preceding water board for their cooperation and help in getting us started and their help throughout the year.

CHARLES SABO, EVERON POLLEN,

Water Commissioners.

Report of the Fire Department

The following is the Report of the Fire Department.

Firemen of both villages have met on the first Wed- nesday evening of each month alternating the meetings in Haydenville and Williamsburg.

Officers elected were Edward Foster, Chairman, and Merrill Bisbee, Secretary and Treasurer.

Patrick Larkin was appointed Deputy Fire Chief and was presented a new white helmet.

The Fire Departments were called out to eighteen building fires and twenty grass, brush and dump fires.

About $1,800.00 was expended for new equipment this year. Items purchased were four Scott breathing appara- tus, new fire hose, coats and boots, 45 foot aluminum sectional ladder, and a portable fire pump.

I feel that all new equipment placed in service is an asset to the Town in the following ways.

1. Better protection of life and property.

2. Lower insurance rates are maintained.

3. Better equipment encourages the firemen to meet the new risks which confront them from year to year such as Plastics L. P. Gas, Foam Rubber and Refrigeration Gases.

CHENEY K. HATHAWAY,

Fire Chief.

Report of the Recreation Commission

Greetings :

Your Recreation Commission submits the following report :

(1) The Ames Memorial Field in Haydenville has been maintained at top condition so that it can be easily rated as one of the best in Western Massachusetts. Much credit is due to Mr. Merrill Parrow - and the cooperation he has received from those using the field. Your com- mission hopes that another year will find further improve- ments made, each making the field that much better.

(2) The so-called "Old Baseball Field" in Williams- burg has been improved to such an extent that games will be scheduled for play there this coming summer. The infield is in excellent condition although the outfield still needs improving. Backstop posts are in place and wire netting will be placed there this spring. Much credit for this work is due Mr. Wellington Graves who has supervised this particular project. The young men of the Town deserve a vote of thanks for their efforts, too. Your commission hopes that eventually this field will be rated as high as the Ames Memorial Field.

(3) Equipment has been purchased to take care of the various sports our people participate in. A long- needed and long-desired wheelbarrow has been purchased for Haydenville.

60

(4) The Annual Summer Band Concert was held this past summer in Haydenville and enjoyed by all. This coming summer the commission plans to hold the concert in Williamsburg.

(5) Due to the lack of cooperation on the part of Mother Nature nothing was accomplished along the line of skating rinks or other out door winter sports.

(6) The commission sponsors evening basketball in the Town Hall. We would like to supply expert super- vision for this project but find that our funds will not permit this.

(7) The commissions 1948 report hoped that this year's survey of work done would show propress. We believe the progress has been made. But, your com- mission did not accomplish this alone, - it was with the help and encouragement of all our citizens. We thank you for that. And, give us your help and encouragement again in 1950- for then Williamsburg will go forward in recreation.

Respectfully submitted.

LAURI RONKA, KENNETH L. BEALS, M. W. GRAVES, Recreation Commissioners.
