ANNUAL TOWN MEETING, MARCH 1, 1937
Pursuant to the warrant a meeting was held in the Rockland Opera House, beginning at 7:30 o'clock P. M. and the following votes were passed and action taken.
Article 1. Magorisk L. Walls was chosen Moderator and sworn to the faithful discharge of his duties.
The Moderator appointed the following tellers for the meeting: Esther Rawson, Madeline Lannin, Elizabeth Walsh, Myra Burke, Nelson Gardner, Alonzo Ford, Paul Trainor, Elmer Cobb, and Charles Callanan.
Article 2. Voted to accept the reports of the various Town Officers and Committees as published in the Town Report.

Under Article No. 3. Meeting of March 1, 1937:
Voted to Pass over appropriation for Burial of Indigent Soldiers.
A motion by the Chief of the Fire Department that the amount of $10,462.00 be raised and appropriated for the Fire Department was not agreed to.

Voted that it be the sense of the meeting that the town report and poll book be put out to open competitive bids.

Voted to reconsider Article No. 3.
Voted to reconsider the sense of meeting vote whereby it was voted that the printing of the town reports and poll book be put out to open competitive bidding.
Voted to instruct the Board of Selectmen to advertise for competitive bids, from the Rockland Printers only, for printing Town report and Poll book.
Voted to reconsider appropriation for town notes and interest.
A motion by the Town Treasurer to raise and appro- priate $28,000.00 for Town Notes and Interest was not agreed to.

Article 5. Voted to authorize the Town Treasurer, with the approval of the Selectmen, to borrow money from time to time in anticipation of the revenue of the financial year beginning January 1, 1938, and to issue a note or notes therefor, payable within one year, and to re- new such note or notes as may be given for a period of less than one year in accordance with Section 17, Chap- ter 44, General Laws.
Article 6. Voted to raise and appropriate the sum of fifteen hundred dollars ($1,500.00) to be spent under the direction of the Selectmen for the part payment of a Visiting Nurse.
Article 7. Voted to appropriate the sum of thirty-two thousand dollars ($32,000.00) for the use of the Water Department the same to be taken from the Water Rev- enue.
Article 8. Voted to raise and appropriate the sum of two hundred eighty-eight dollars ($288.00) to be spent under the direction of the Selectmen for the purpose of renting quarters for the use of the Veterans of the Span- ish-American War.

Article 9. Voted to raise and appropriate the sum of four hundred dollars ($400.00) to be spent under the direction of the Selectmen for the observance of Mem- orial Day.
Article 10. Voted to raise and appropriate the sum of sixty dollars ($60.00) for the care of the Town Cemetery.
Article 11. Voted to raise and appropriate the sum of nine hundred dollars ($900.00) to be spent under the direction of the Selectmen for the purpose of renting quarters for the use of the Rockland Post No. 147 of the American Legion.
Article 12. Voted to raise and appropriate the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars ($150.00) for the use of the Plymouth County Trustees for County Aid to Agricul- ture and to choose James D. Mahoney as Town Director as provided in Sections 41 and 45 of Chapter 128, Gen- eral Laws. Unanimous vote.
Article 13. Voted to raise and appropriate the sum of three thousand six hundred thirty-three dollars and twelve cents ($3,633.12) for maintenance of the Plym- outh County Hospital.
Article 14. Voted to raise and appropriate the sum of six hundred dollars ($600.00) for the maintenance of traffic beacons and signals.
Article 15. Voted to raise and appropriate the sum of two hundred and ninety-two dollars and fifty cents ($292.50) to insure the Firemen of the Town of Rock- land that they might receive compensation in case of ac- cident when on duty.
Article 16. Voted to raise and appropriate the sum of five thousand dollars ($5,000.00) to be spent in con-

junction with the State and County to rebuild East Water Street from where the rebuilding ended in 1936 to Web- ster Street.
Article 17. Voted to raise and appropriate the sum of six hundred forty dollars and eighty-seven cents ($640.87) to pay for the overlay on the construction of Union Street.
Article 18. Voted to pass over the raising and appro- priating of the sum of Eight hundred thirty-eight dollars and twenty-seven cents ($838.27) to reimburse the J. R. Worcester Co. for actual loss in the contract with the town in the construction of Union Street.
Article 19. Voted to raise and appropriate the sum of five hundred ten dollars ($510.00) to pay Bradford West- in Inc., for extras claimed in the construction of Union Street.
Article 20. Voted to raise and appropriate the sum of three thousand fifty-three dollars and eighty cents ($3,053.80) to be spent under the direction of the Park Commissioners to pay for materials and services on Fed- eral projects, the labor to be furnished by the Federal Government.

Article 34. Voted to raise and appropriate the sum of Five thousand dollars ($5,000.00) to be spent for the cost of materials and general expenses under the W. P. A.

Article 22. Voted to raise and appropriate the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars to pay for striping streets of the town.
Article 23. Voted to raise and appropriate the sum of one hundred dollars ($100.00) for criminal cases in court.
Article 24. Voted to raise and appropriate the sum of seventy dollars ($70.00) for the purchase of a fifty gal- lon test can to be used by the Sealer of Weights and Measures.
Article 25. Voted to pass over the allowing of home owners who are behind in their taxes to work them out in the highway or other departments.
Article 26. Voted to pass over the granting of power to the Selectmen to intervene in any labor disputes which may arise in town.
Article 27. Voted to accept a town way, known as Smith Road, as laid out by the Selectmen and filed with the Town Clerk, from Liberty Street running westerly a distance of three hundred and forty-four feet.
Article 28. Voted to gravel Smith Road from Liberty Street a distance of three hundred forty-four (344) feet and that the amount of three hundred and fifty dollars ($350.00) to be taken from the appropriation for High- way repairs raised under Article No. 3 to pay for the cost of same.
Article 29. Voted to accept a town way, known as Douglas Street, as laid out by the Selectmen and filed with the Town Clerk, from Rice Avenue southerly a dis- tance of three hundred seventy 45/100 (370.45) feet.
Article 30. Voted to pass over the raising and appro- priating of the sum of forty-two hundred dollars

($4,200.00) for the erection of a building for the housing of town equipment on the lot opposite Reed's Pond owned by the town, but that the Moderator be instructed to ap- point a committee of three to secure suitable housing quarters for all town equipment.
Committee appointed: Roderick Mackenzie, J. Edward Kane and Fred M. Ryan.
Article 31. Voted to raise and appropriate the sum of five hundred dollars ($500.00) for an Assessor's Map.
Article 32. Voted to appropriate from the sum raised under article No. 34 the amount of two hundred seventy- fice dollars ($275.00) for materials for a drain and two catch basins on the easterly side of Salem Street start- ing at 420 Salem Street and running to number 468, a distance of approximately 480 feet, the labor to be fur- ished by the W. P. A.
Article 33. Voted to raise and appropriate the sum of one hundred dollars ($100.00) to be used by the School Committee to pay for the expenses of heating, lighting and for Casualty Insurance of Junior-Senior High School and Mckinley School Buildings as well as additional ex- pense for janitors when the buildings are used by individ- uals and associations for educational, recreational, and like purposes under the provision of Chapter 71, Section 71 of the General Laws.
Article 35. Voted to appropriate from the sum raised under article No. 34, the amount of two hundred twenty- five dollars ($225.00) for materials to install a covered drain with catch basin on the East side of Howard Street from Custer Street to Vernon Street and the labor to be furnished by the W. P. A.
Article 36. Voted to appropriate from the sum raised under article No. 34, the amount of one hundred fifty dol-

lars ($150.00) for materials to place a catch basin and drainage near the residence of John Parker on Belmont Street, the labor to be furnished by the W. P. A.

Article 38. Voted to raise and appropriate the sum of Five hundred dollars ($500.00) to purchase the lot of land southwest of the railroad at the corner of Plain and Grove Streets, known as the Washington Reed Lot, con- sisting of four (4) acres more or less.
Unanimous vote.
Article 37. Voted to raise and appropriate the sum of Two thousand dollars ($2,000.00) for cost of materials for the construction of a seepage bed on the Washington Reed Lot, southwest of the railroad track, to take care of the requirements of the Junior-Senior High School, the labor to be furnished by the W. P. A.
Article 39. Voted to raise and appropriate the sum of Five hundred dollars ($500.00) to take care of the catch basions and gutters on various streets of the town.
Article 40. Voted to appropriate from the sum raised under article No. 34 the amount of Four hundred dollars ($400.00) for materials to build a sidewalk and curb on the west side of Highland Street from Market Street to Plain Street, the labor to be furnished by the W. P. A.
Article 41. Voted to pass over the raising and appro- priating of the sum of eight hundred fifty dollars ($850.00) to build a sidewalk and curb on the west side of Plain Street from Market Street to Payson Avenue.
Article 42. Voted to pass over the raising and ap- propriating of the sum of eleven hundred dollars ($1,100.00) to build a sidewalk and curb on Myrtle Street (west side) from Bigelow Avenue to Summit Street.

Article 53. Voted to pass over the raising and appro- priating of One thousand dollars ($1,000.00) to build a sidewalk and curb on the southerly side of Williams Street from Plain Street to Prospect Street.
Article 54. Voted to raise and appropriate the sum of Eleven hundred dollars ($1,100.00) to build a sidewalk and curb on the northerly side of Webster Street from Union Street to Wall Street.
Article 55. Voted to pass over the raising and appro- priating of a sum of money to repair the bridge on Lib- erty Street near Liberty Court.

Article 56. Voted to raise and appropriate the sum of One thousand dollars ($1,000.00) for materials for im- provements of the grounds at Reed's Pond, the labor to be furnished by the W. P. A.
Article 57. Voted to pass over the raising and appro- priating of Eleven hundred fifty dollars ($1,150.00) to build an asphalt sidewalk with curb on the east side of Union Street from the residence of Dr. Frederick Corey to Bigelow avenue, approximately 1000 feet.
Article 58. Voted to build an asphalt sidewalk with curb on the west side of Howard Street from Webster Street to Park Street, a distance of approximately 250 feet and the amount of Two hundred and fifty dollars ($250.00) be appropriated from the amount raised for Sidewalks under article No. 3 to pay for the cost of same.
Article 59. Voted to pass over the raising and appro- priating of a sum of money for materials for a curb on the westerly side of Salem Street running from Spruce Street to North Avenue, the labor to be furnished by the W. P. A.
Article 60. Voted to raise and appropriate the sum of Seven hundred dollars ($700.00) for materials to build a sidewalk on the north side of Salem Street from Union Street to Greenwood Street, a distance of about 1300 feet, the labor to be furnished by the W. P. A.

Article 63. Voted to build a tarvia sidewalk with curb on the southerly side of North Avenue from Union Street to the residence of Arthur Barry, a distance of 630 feet, and that the amount of Seven hundred dollars ($700.00) be appropriated from the sum raised for Sidewalks under article No. 3 to pay for the cost of same.
Article 64. Voted to pass over the raising and appro- priating of a sum of money to rebuild a sidewalk and curb on the north side of Pacific Street from Union Street to Division Street, a distance of approximately 1500 feet.
Voted to adjurn until March 8, 1937, 7:30 P. M.
Article 65. Voted to raise and appropriate the sum of Five hundred thirteen dollars and sixty cents ($513.60) to take care of the overlay on East Water Street Con- struction.
Article 66. Voted to raise and appropriate the sum of three hundred dollars ($300.00) to be used to employ a Supervisor of Bureau of Old Age Assistance, this sum to be used in conjunction with the grant received from the Federal Government.
Article 67. Voted to accept a town way, known as Wilson Street, as laid out by the Selectmen and filed with the Town Clerk, from Pond Street westerly a dis- tance of eight hundred and eight (808) feet.
