SELECTMEN'S REPORT

To the Citizens of the Town of Southbridge:

The Board of Selectmen hereby submit the following re- port of the activities of the department for the year of 1953.

The Board organized under the date of March 3, 1953, J. Gerard Nolet was appointed Chairman of the Board, Wesley K. Cole was appointed Clerk of the Board, and Emile J. Martin serving as third member of the Board.

This being the first year that the Highway Department has been under the direct supervision of the Board of Selectmen, we feel that much advancement has been made in improving many of our most traveled street within the center of the Town, as well as giving proper attention to the outlying districts. If our present program can continue, within a few years our streets and roads will be in an excellent condition.

Some major repairs have been done to the Town Hall Building during the year, such as repairing the roof and paint- ing the outside trim of the building, these repairs were much needed, however, we feel that there are other repairs needed, and that a similar amount of money should be appropriated each year until the necessary repairs are made, in order to pre- serve the building so that it can be used for many more years, without being a burden to the tax payer.

With all other Town Departments, we have done our best to improve conditions within our Town, and to give our citizens good government at a minimum cost.

The income of the Board for the year 1953 was $18,222.00 and was received from the following items:
