GENERAL STATISTICS
Arlington is situated six miles northwest of Boston, in latitude 42 deg., 25 min. north; longitude 71 deg., 09 min. west, at an elevation above mean tide of from 4 to 377 feet.
Massachusetts Avenue at Cambridge line, elevation 10 feet.
Massachusetts Avenue at Pleasant Street, elevation 48 feet.
Massachusetts Avenue at Park Avenue, elevation 155 feet.
Park Circle at Eastern Avenue (base of standpipe), elevation 377 feet. Crescent Hill Avenue at Park Place, elevation 281 feet.
The Town and a part of what is now Belmont were set off from Cambridge and incorporated as West Cambridge in 1807. The name was changed from West Cambridge to Arlington in 1867.
Area of Town, including that covered by water 3,517 1/2 acres 5 1/2 square miles; area covered by water, 286.2 acres.

The Four Fatal Accidents were as follows:
On March 16, 1963 at 4:10 P.M. Mabel F. Harney, 57 years, 52 Robbins Road, Arlington, while operating an automobile on Robbins Road, toward Massa- chusetts Avenue, was in collision with a tree a short distance in from Massa- chusetts Avenue, receiving injuries which resulted in her death on the same date. In the automobile with her at this time was her husband, Edward F. Harney, 63 years, 52 Robbins Road, Arlington, who received injuries which resulted in his death on the same date.

REPORT OF THE POLICE DEPARTMENT
On March 27, 1963 at 1:50 A.M. Marilyn Floyd, 37 years, 168 Norfolk Street, Cambridge, while operating her automobile in an Easterly direction on the Concord Turnpike, went across the median strip and head-on into a Mack Truck being operated in a Westerly direction on the Concord Turnpike, re- ceiving injuries which resulted in her death on the same date.
On June 2, 1963 at 12:55 A.M. Denis J. Mangan, 17 years, 26 Conwell Avenue, Somerville, while operating an automobile in an Easterly direction on the Concord Turnpike, just East of the Pleasant Street Underpass came in con- tact with an Edison pole, receiving injuries which resulted in his death on June 12, 1963.
On December 18, 1963 at 6:06 P.M. Viola A. Casalou, 58 years, 930 Mass. Avenue, Arlington, a pedestrian, when crossing the westbound lane of the Concord Turnpike near the Cambridge line was struck by an automobile re- ceiving injuries which resulted in her death on that date.

REPORT OF THE POLICE DEPARTMENT
TRAFFIC SIGNAL DEPARTMENT
The Traffic Signal Maintenance Division is responsible for the installa- tion and maintenance of all aids to the regulation and control of vehicular and pedestrian traffic on the public ways.
Measures adopted in 1963 to expedite the flow of traffic and to facilitate parking were as follows:
Mill Street was widened from Mass. Avenue to Summer Street. Spring Street was widened between Highland Avenue and Bellevue Road.
Parking was prohibited on the easterly side of Pleasant Street, between Swan Street and Mass. Avenue. Parking was prohibited on the westerly side of Water Street, between 8:00 A.M. and 6:00 P.M., on a trial basis for ninety (90) days.
Modern street lighting was installed on Appleton Street, between Park Avenue and the Concord Turnpike.

*In conformance with the State and National Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, as amended, the Stop sign shall be octagonal in shape, shall have a red background, and shall carry the word STOP in white letters at least one-third the height of the sign. It shall have a standard size of 30 inches by 30 inches. Secondary messages shall not be used on Stop signs. Stop signs bearing the "Through Way" are being replaced as prescribed by the manual.
