Within our course of study we also desire to develop within students a feeling for critical thinking and problem solving. It is hoped that they may learn the constant necessity for searching on their own for evidence and of avoiding glib acceptance of answers because doing so offers an easy way out or because those answers seem obvious or conventional.

The role of social values constitutes the basis of good citizenship. Teachers who themselves possess an appreciation of democratic values, patriotism, and an awareness of the values implicit in social studies content, inevitably help develop in their pupils, social conscience, tolerance, good will, objectivity, fairness, and a strong sense of loyalty and obligation to family, community and nation.

GUIDANCE REPORT

(Francis B. Sheehan, Guidance Director)

This school year an additional Elementary School Adjustment Counselor was added to the Guidance staff which now gives the Tewksbury School System two adjustment counselors. Their primary duties are working with elementary students who have problems during their early years in school.

The senior class had a total of two hundred and forty-four students. It is of primary importance and interest to all members of the school staff as to where these students are heading when theyleave Tewksbury High School.

A percentage type description is perhaps the best way to show the breakdown:

Twenty-four percent of the graduating class, fifty-eight students, went to four year colleges which included:

Salem State College

Emmanuel College

Plymouth State College

Harvard University

University of Mass.

Boston University

Regis College

Northeastern University

Fitchburg State College

Bridgewater State College

Lowell State College Merrimack College

Franklin

Nine percent of the class, twenty-three students, continued their edu- cation at two year community colleges or business schools.

Included in this group were:

Mt. Ida Junior College

Green Mountain College Northern Essex Community College Fisher Junior College Wentworth Institute Franklin Technical Institute

Bryant McIntosh Burdett College Bentley College

180

In addition to the four and two year schools entered by the students, twenty-five others are learning various careers by attending such schools as:

East Coast Aero Tech.

New England Baptist Hospital

Andover Institute

Tewksbury State Hospital

Culinary Institute

Wilfred Academy of Hairdressing

Lowell General Hospital

School of Practical Art

Lowell Academy of Hairdressing

St. John's Hospital Lemuel Shattuck Hospital

Essex Agricultural School

Of the remaining forty-six percent of the class, forty-seven girls and boys from the Business Department entered various companies in positions such as typists, stenographers and file clerks. These companies include many large banks, insurance firms, electronic plants and many of the civil service organizations in the area. The remaining graduates entered the field of employment in many various occupations or joined the armed forces.

Another important highlight of the class was the large number of college students that received financial scholarships from both the local organiza- tions and from the colleges themselves.

The colleges involved include:

Harvard University

University of Massachusetts

Merrimack College Syracuse University

Lowell Technological Institute

Northeastern University

The total amount of scholarship money received was over thirty-two thousand dollars. This class, as one can see, had an excellent record and all members of the school staff should take pride in whatever part they had to play in the total education of these students.

181

Every person from 14-16 years of age must have an employment certifi- cate or permit and those between 16-18 years of age must have an educa- tional certificate before starting work. These certificates and permits may be obtained from the offices of the Superintendent of Schools, the High School Principal, and Mrs. Loella Dewing of the School Committee. When one makes application for a certificate (or "working card"), he must apply in person and bring birth certificate and report of last grade attended.
