ANNUAL TOWN MEETING, 1891.
At a legal meeting of the inhabitants of the town of Westford, qualified by law to vote in town affairs, held in the Town House, March 16, 1891, the following business was transacted:
1st. George T. Day and Albert P. Richardson were appointed tellers by the Town Clerk, to serve during the election of Modera- tor, and they were duly sworn by said Clerk. J. Henry Read was unanimously elected Moderator.
2d. The selectmen appointed William E. Frost and W. H. H. Burbeck as ballot clerks, and they were duly sworn by the Town Clerk.
3d. Voted, to take up Article 8.
4th. Voted, to reconsider the last vote passed, and take up the 19th Article.
5th. Voted, that the compensation of the Collector be one per cent.
6th. Voted, to take up Article 8.
7th. Voted, to keep the polls open until 1.30 o'clock, .P . M
8th. The Moderator appointed, George T. Day, Albert P. Rich- ardson and William L. Kittredge, tellers to act during the balloting for town officers, and they were duly sworn by the Town Clerk.
9th. The meeting proceeded to ballot for town officers, and also on the following question: " Shall licenses be granted for the sale of intoxicating liquors in this town?"
Before the commencement of voting, the ballot box was opened and found to be empty, the register standing on zero (000). 6 bal- lots failed to go in with the turn of the crank.
At the close of the polls the register stood on 317.

13th. Voted, to accept the Report of the Overseers of the Poor as printed.
14th. Voted, to accept the Report of the School Committee as printed.
15th. Voted, to accept the Report of the Trustees of the Town Library as printed.
16th. Voted, to accept the Report of the Trustees of the Town Library, and appropriate the sum recommended in said Report, from the Town Treasury. The Report recommends the appropria- tion of one hundred and fifty dollars ($150).
17th. Voted, to accept the Report of the Selectmen on Guide Boards.
18th. Voted, to appropripate from the Town Treasury three thousand dollars ($3000) to defray Town Debts and charges.
19th. Voted, to raise forty-five hundred dollars ($4500) for Read- ing and Writing Schools.
20th. In regard to Article 11, which was "To see if the Town will authorize the Town Treasurer, under the written direction of

the Selectmen, to borrow money from time to time to meet the demands on the Treasury, or act in relation to the same," the Town voted to give such authority to the Town Treasurer.

SPECIAL TOWN MEETING
At a legal meeting of the inhabitants of the Town of Westford, qualified by law to vote in town affairs, held at the Town House, April 25, 1891, the following business was transacted:
1st. Voted, to chose a Moderator by ballot.
2d. Voted, to dispense with the use of the check list during the election of Moderator.
3d. Chose Albert P. Richardson, Moderator.
4th. Mr. Richardson not being present, J. H. Read was chosen Moderator.
5th. Voted, to accept and adopt the Report of the Selectmen in regard to laying out a town way near Westford Station on Nashua and Acton Railroad, on petition of George T. Day and others.
6th. Voted, to leave thematter of widening, straightening, and re- pairing of the road leading from the house of N. B. Blood, by house of E. H. Flagg to Littleton line, as petitioned for by C. L. Howard and others, with the Selectmen, and that three hundred dollars be raised to defray the expense of said repairs, widenings, and straight- enings.
7th. Voted, to authorize the Selectmen to repair and paint the Town House, at an expense not exceeding one thousand dollars, and that that sum be appropriated for that purpose.
8th. Voted, that the Selectmen be authorized to build a wire fence around the Nashoba (No. 4) School-house lot.
9th. Voted, to authorize the Selectmen to shingle School Houses Nos. three and seven.
10th. Voted, to leave the cementing of the cellar of School House No. 1 to the Selectmen.
11th. Voted, to accept the minutes of the meeting.
12th. Voted, to dissolve the meeting.

LAYING OUT OF ROAD ON PETITION OF GEORGE T. DAY AND OTHERS.
Upon the aforesaid petition, due notice having been given to all persons interested to meet at the Depot on the Nashua & Acton Railroad, to be heard relative to the subject matter, we, the Select- men of said Westford, having heard all parties interested in the foregoing petition, and having viewed the location of the proposed road, have laid out a town way hereafter described, as follows :
Beginning at a stone bound on the highway leading from West- ford Centre to Forge Village, near Railroad Bridge over Nashua & Acton Railroad, thence south 202°, west 321} feet, to a point 14 feet from Nashua & Acton Railroad station; thence south 15°, west 642 feet, to the old highway from Westford Centre to Forge Village, sa shown on plan of Thomas E. Symmes, accompanying this Report. No land damages are claimed or awarded by the reason of the laying out of said town way.
Estimated cost of building said town way, three hundred (300) dollars.
Said town way is reported to the town for their approval and acceptance.
Dated at Westford, Mass., this 17th day of April, A. D. 1891.

FIRES IN 1891.
April 8. Wooden dwelling house near Forge Village; owned by Jennie Reed ; occupied by Ephraim Reed and family. Value, $100. Totally destroyed. No insurance. Value of contents unknown; partially burned. Caused by spark from chimney dropping on roof.
May 10. Forest fire near Cold Spring. Twelve to fifteen acres burned over. Damage, $200. Caught from the embers of a fire left by persons from Lowell, that had been built for the purpose of cooking fish that they had taken from Stony Brook during the night before. Owners, George W. Heywood and Charles H. Fletcher.
Aug. 21. Thirty acres of sprout land belonging to the estate of Josiah G. Abbot, situated in the north part of the town, burned over. Damage estimated at $100. Supposed to have been set by persons picking berries.
Dec. 5. Wooden dwelling house near Unitarian meeting house. Owned by Edward E. Wright and Bancroft heirs. Occupied by Edward E. Wright, who perished in the flames. Value, $500; totally consumed; insurance, $450. Contents totally consumed ; value, $100; no insurance. Cause of fire, accidental, from the best information.
