It is therefore recommended that a beginning be made in this matter; that one or two small schools be closed, say those at Minot's Corner and the Lyon district, the pupils in the first case being transported to the Centre, and those from the Lyon district brought to Graniteville. Some $250 or $300 ought to be saved in teachers' wages above the cost of transportation.
2. The school year should be lengthened to thirty-six weeks.
3. The wages of the teachers should be increased in all except the small and remote schools.
Almost if not the entire expense contemplated in the second and third recommendations may be met by the money saved by carry- ing out the first recommendation. As a result those of our present teachers whose services are very acceptable will be induced to retain their positions longer; while they do remain, evidences of appreciation will give new zest to their labors; and when vacancies shall occur it will be possible to secure better talent than could otherwise be obtained.
IN CONCLUSION.
To the Committee my thanks are due for the cordial manner in which they have supported and assisted me in my work.
14
The teachers have made me feel so heartily welcome, have exhib- ited so genuine an interest in their work, and been so willing to receive suggestions as to lay me under great obligations to them.
Let us hope that much of the seed sown may have been vitalized by the Spirit of All Fruit, Truth, and that He may give a large harvest in the true and ennobled lives of the children.
EDMUND P. BARKER, Superintendent of Schools.
