The Selectmen have to report that the Town has again received a gift of one thousand dollars, for the benefit of the Town Library, by will of the late Augustus K. Fletcher of Chippewa Falls, Wis., a native of Westford. A meeting was held by the Town, August 18, 1887, at which the following votes were passed.
"Voted, that the thanks of the Town of Westford be extended to Mrs. A. K. Fletcher for the prompt and liberal compliance with the expressed wish of her late husband, in the matter of the legacy to the Westford Town Library. Voted, that a copy of the foregoing
( 35 )
vote be transmitted to Mrs. A. K. Fletcher, by the Town Clerk."
The money was received by the Selectmen, in trust for the Town Library, in September, 1887, and no favor- able opportunity for investment, for the best interest of the Library, presenting itself, the money was placed in the Savings Bank awaiting a more favorable investment, December, 1887.

The Library fund has been increased the past year by a gift of one thousand dollars that it is a pleasure to acknowledge. The late Augustus K. Fletcher provided
( 37 )
in his will that the above named sum be given to West- ford, his native town, for the benefit of the Public Library. Owing to some informality in its execution, the instrument, on presentation for probate, was declared void. None the less, the legacy was paid from her own share of the estate by Mrs. Fletcher, out of respect for the wish of her husband, and in full sympathy with his propose. The gift could hardly come in a way to make it more acceptable.
The Directors would express their obligation to those townspeople who have recommended books for the Library. If in all cases it has not seemed advisible to buy every book so recommended, the reason has usually been that a similar work was already in our collection, or the desired book was of too high a price. The absence from the Library of a desirable book is certain to be dis- covered, soon or late, by some disappointed applicant for it. Notice thereof will help to bring the Library to its best estate and highest usefulness.
To a limited extent, personal tastes in the choice of books can be gratified ; and it is safe to assume that the Directors will be helped in their selection of books by the recommendations and suggestions of those for whose use they are purchased.
An unusually large number of books have been re- bound this year. The skill attained by modern book binders in putting together books in a way to insure their speedy return for repairs, is such that it would hardly be fair to assume that the ruinous condition of so many of our volumes was due to hard usage. Still, it may not be amiss to call attention to the matter, and urge care against unnecessary injury to Library books.
The gift of two volumes of the Unitarian Review from the Unitarian Society; of several volumes of Public
( 38 )
Documents from Hon. George F. Hoar; and of two volumes from Mr. Nahum H. Wright, is gratefully acknowledged.
The Directors respectfully recommend that the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars be raised and ap- propriated for the Library for the ensuing year.
Respectfully submitted, ELIZABETH S. ABBOTT, FREDERIC A. FISHER, WALTER J. SLEEPER, Directors of Public Library.
