In 1734-5, William Condy and wife, Joanna, owned land in Biddeford, Me., which they disposed of. They then removed to Boston. They may or may not have been the parents of Samuel1 Condon who was one of the early settlers at Medumcook (Friendship), Me. Samuel was living at Falmouth (Cape Elisabeth) in 1754, where at that time he signed a petition for a division of the parish. Probably not long after that he removed to Medumcook (or Medomack), where in 1767, he signed a petition for the removal of the courts. Benjamin2 Condon (Samuel1), son of Samuel Condon and Mary his wife, was born about 1751; moved from Cape Elisabeth to Friendship with his parents, and married Ruth Thomas (pub. at Waldoboro, July 20, 1789), who was born in 1766. They lived for a time in Friendship where some of their children were born; removed to Camden and thence to Lincolnville. Some time after 1810 he exchanged places with Nathaniel Fernald of Matinicus and came here with his family, and he and his wife lived here for the remainder of their lives. He died Nov. 30, 1846; his wife probably about ten or twelve years later. His death notice, pub- lished in the Rockland Gazette, states that Benjamin was a Revolutionary soldier. James3 Condon (Benjamin2, Samuel1), son of Benjamin and Ruth (Thomas) Condon, was born Dec. 31, 1790; came to Matinicus with his parents and married May 3, 1816, Mary Burgess, daughter of Ezekiel and Lydia (Eldredge) Burgess, who was born at Penobscot, Feb. 25, 1795. James was a farmer and merchant, and at one time paid the largest tax of any one on the island. He was much respected and died Dec. 11, 1881. His wife died Jan. 29, 1863. She was the widow of John Lovett, and daughter of Abraham and Lydia (Thayer) Young, and was born Oct. 18, 1823, and died June 25, 1884. Seth died July 13, 1894. Seth was a mariner and in this connection the following document (the original is in the possession of S. T. Kimball of Rockland) will be of interest. It is entitled "Seth Condon's Protection," and is stamped with the seal of the Custom House at Philadelphia :
"I John Steele Collector of the District of Philadelphia, do hereby Certify, that Seth Condon an American seaman, aged Twenty- one years, or thereabouts, of the height of five feet eight inches light complexion light brown hair hazel eyes is a native of Camden

John E. Conery was born in 1848; he married M. A. Smith who was born in 1855. He was employed upon the fish wharf for many years, and at one time owned the old Condon place where he and his wife lived for a while. He sold this place to Stanley Palmeter about 1923.

Ephraim Coombs married Levina Hall, daughter of David and Susannah (Allen) Hall, and lived at Matinicus for a number of years. Among their children were the following :

Frances (Smith) Ames, who was born Oct. 7, 1875. Came to Matinicus about 1903, lived a number of years, then removed to Rockland and then to Massachusetts. One daughter was born to them: Dorothy A. b. May 19, 1904.
CRIE
John1 Crie was born in Glasgow, Scotland, Apr. 30, 1762. He came to America in 1778. He served in the British Army, from which he was honorably discharged, Dec. 24, 1783. His certificate of discharge is now in the possession of his great-great-grandson, Mr. Edwin H. Crie of Rockland, and is an interesting document. After his discharge, John became an American citizen and settled on Matinicus. On Dec. 25, 1786, he married Mary Hall, daughter of Ebenezer and Susannah (Young) Hall. She was born Aug. 25, 1761, and died Feb. 17, 1835. John died Feb. 16, 1843. Five children were born to them, all on Matinicus :

keeping in a log house. In 1879, he owned the whole of Criehaven. He was a trader, a fish dealer and a farmer. He and his wife lived there for 53 years and finally died and were buried there-he Jan. 25, 1901, she June 31, 1919. Their children were:

Ebenezer3 R. Crie (John2, John1), son of John and Sallie (Emery) Crie, was born at Matinicus May 24, 1828. He married, Oct. 13, 1873, Harriett (Thomas) Green. She was born Mar. 20, 1843. He died Mar. 1, 1895. Children : MYRA F. b. May 18, 1875 ; m. Dec. 24, 1893, John Stock- enberg, and had dau. Mildred, b. Dec. 3, 1894. IRA T. b. June 26, 1878; d. Feb. 8, 1892.

John3 C. Crie (Ebenezer2, John1), son of Ebenezer and Sallie (Burgess) Crie, was born Jan. 12, 1818. He mar- ried (1) Nov. 12, 1838, Julia Ann Spear, who was born Feb. 14, 1818, and died Aug. 30, 1858, (2) Apr. 18, 1860, Jane Weed. He died 1894. Children by 1st wife :

He married Jan. 1, 1876, Ida E. Shep- ard, daughter of Wm. W. and Flora E. (Hall) Shepard. She was born June 21, 1856, and died Mar. 24, 1917; one son :

Frank+ Leslie Crie (Robert3, John2, John1), son of Rob- ert and Harriett (Hall) Crie, was born July 17, 1862. He married at Ainsworth, Neb. Madge Remy who was born in Indiana, July 11, 1867. They reside in the West. Children :

Horatio4 Dunton Crie (Robert3, John2, John1), son of Robert and Harriette (Hall) Crie, was born July 9, 1870. He married in 1893, Mabel Packard of Searsmont, daughter of Edward and Mary (Ladd) Packard. She was born July 6, 1871. Horatio has been Commissioner of Sea and Shore Fisheries for a number of years. Children :

R.4 Fred Crie (Reuben3, John2, John1), son of Reuben L. and Mercy (Young) Crie, was born at Matinicus June 5, 1841. He married Aug. 10, 1862, Floretta Tolman, daughter of Isaac and Susan (Crie) Tolman. She was born Sept. 10, 1842. Three days after his wedding the bride- groom left for the front as a private in the 2d Maine Bat- tery. He served until '65, when he returned as a lieutenant. He died Mar. 12, 1908. His wife died Mar. 4, 1923. One son:
EDWIN1 H. CRIE (R. Fred4, Reuben3, John2, John1), b. June 5, 1841; m. Jan. 2, 1893, Margaret Smith, dau. of David F. (veteran of Civil War) and Rosannah (George) Smith. She was b. Oct. 29, 1874.
Kelly5 B. Crie (R. Anson4, Hiram H.3, Ebenezer2, John1), son of R. Anson and Ida E. (Shepard) Crie, was born Aug. 14, 1879. He married June 20, 1901, Grace Getchell. She was born Nov. 16, 1880. Their children :

Robert Cushman was living here in 1856, and for a number of years afterward. He married (1) Patience Marshall, (2) (pub. Sept. 22, 1860) Susan E. Hall. Moved away from here soon after.

John Derry, born 1811, married Aug. 14, 1843, Abigail (Eldredge ) Burgess, widow of Ezekiel Burgess. She was born Feb. 15, 1798, and died here Oct. 17, 1879. He died Apr. 9, 1877.

FERNALD
Nathaniel Fernald was born Sept. 11, 1769. When a young man he came from Portland and formed the acquaint- ance of Patience Hall, the daughter of Ebenezer Hall and Susannah Young, who was born Feb. 14, 1771. They were married Jan. 28, 1791. They lived here more than twenty years and raised a large family of children. Some time after 1810, Nathaniel with his family removed to Lincoln- ville, having exchanged places with Benjamin Condon of that town. Nathaniel and wife both died in Lincolnville; he Nov. 2, 1857, and she Sept. 15 of the same year. Follow- ing are the names of their children, all born on Matinicus: ABIGAIL b. Jan. 16, 1792; d. July 12, 1810.
