Frank H. Beals was born Apr. 29, 1879. His wife's name was Harriette P. Hutchings, daughter of Luman

She was born in Hyde Park, Mass., Feb. 12, 1877. They came to Matinicus in 1908. He is a machinist. One daughter was born to them:

BURGESS


Thomas' and Dorothy Burgess arrived in Salem, Mass., with a young family about 1630, coming from England, and lodged for a while at Lynn. A section of land was assigned

him in Duxbury, July 3, 1637, which he later forfeited by moving to Sandwich, where he was one of the original settlers, and a chief man of the town. He was called Good- man Burgess, and served the town in every public office. He died Feb. 13, 1665, aged 82 yrs., and his grave was marked by a marble slab brought from England, he being the first of the Puritans to be so honored. Dorothy, his wife, died Feb. 27, 1677.


John? Burgess (Thomas1), was the second son of Thomas and Dorothy. He married Sept. 8, 1657, Mary, daughter of Peter Worden, and had a large family. He served as grand juror in 1661. He early moved to Yarmouth, Mass., and was deputy from that town to the court at Plymouth, in 1680. He died in 1701; his wife in 1723.


John3 Burgess (John2, Thomas1), was the eldest son of John and Mary (Worden) Burgess. He married Sarah Nickerson, in 1710.


John4 Burgess (John3, John2, Thomas1), son of John and Sarah (Nickerson) Burgess, was born Oct. 1710. He married Elisabeth Bacon, Feb. 20, 1735; died in 1771. He lived in Harwich, Mass.


John5 Burgess (John+, John3, John2, Thomas1), son of John and Elizabeth (Bacon) Burgess, was born May 21, 1736. He married Sarah Rogers, Jan. 26 1756. He lived at Vinalhaven a while, previous to 1785, but afterwards removed to Belfast, where he died Dec. 2, 1827. His chil- dren were:

Lydia Eldredge of Chatham, Mass. She was the daughter of Thomas and Elisabeth Eldredge, and was born Sept. 18, 1765. Ezekiel and Lydia lived for a number of years at Penobscot (Castine) ; removed from there to Vinalhaven, and from thence to Matinicus (about 1825-7). They were the first permanent settlers of the name of Burgess, upon Matinicus, the place now owned by Mr. Raynes, being the original Burgess home. Ezekiel died here Feb. 25, 1839. His wife died May 27, 1853. The following children were born to them :

He was keeper of the "Rock" Light, 1853- 1861. He died at Vinalhaven, May 16, 1875. Thankful was born July 1, 1806, and died at Vinalhaven Aug. 24, 1891. The following children were born to them:
