Joseph Leighton, born in 1816, lived at Criehaven and Matinicus for many years. He married Susan Hall, daughter of David and Susannah (Allen) Hall. She was born 1825. The following children were born to them; perhaps others :

LONG
Charles A. E. Long came to Matinicus in 1910. He was born in Boston, Mass., Apr. 8, 1870, the son of Samuel T. Long who was born in Durham, N. H., Mar. 30, 1841, and

Zeruah F. Titus who was born in Union, Me., Jan. 1847. He married, June 9, 1892, Helen E. Young, daughter of Randall E. and Ellen (Frohock) Young (both born in Lin- colnville, Me.) One son (Winfred T.) was born to them Dec. 24, 1893. Charles A. E. Long was educated in the Boston schools, and was graduated from the Boston English High School, in the class of 1888. He is a direct de- scendant, on his paternal side, of John and Welthen God- dard and of Philip Chesley, who came from England and settled in what is now Durham, N. H., in 1631-4. His great-great-grandfather, Capt. Eleazer Bennett, gave Revolutionary service and was one of those who helped to capture the powder and stores at Fort William and Mary, in 1774. Samuel T. Long, father of Charles A. E. Long, was one of the first to volunteer in the Civil War, as a member of Co. G, 1st Mass. Vols. Lt. Winfred T. Long was an aviator in the Great War, and is now a lieutenant in the Officers Reserve. The mother of Charles A. E. Long is descended from the Emertons, Grays and Herricks, pioneers of Hancock County, Me., and from the Tituses, Gilmores, Rogerses, Whittakers, Millers and Sabens, all of whom settled in New England in the early part of the seventeenth century.
LOVETT
John Lovett was born in Beverly, Mass., in 1791; came to Matinicus and married Mar. 9, 1841, Sally Young, daughter of Abraham and Lydia (Thayer) Young, who was born Oct. 18, 1823. He died without issue, Mar. 14, 1854, and his widow married (2) Seth Condon.
LUCAS
John Lucas, son of Edward and Mary, was born in Union, in 1839; came to Matinicus and married Jan. 12, 1860, Rhoda Helen Abbott, daughter of Samuel S. and Abigail (Burgess) Abbott. John died Mar. 6, 1920; his wife died several months previous ; children :

MARSHALL
Robert Marshall was born in St. George, Jan. 16, 1794, the son of Benjamin and Phoebe (Young) Marshall. He was a veteran of the War of 1812, and received a pension for same. He served in Captains Bradford and Ira Drew's companies, Twenty-first Regiment of U. S. Infantry, and was at the battle of Bridgewater, and others. He came to Matinicus and married July 13, 1826, Lydia Allen, daugh- ter of Charles and Lydia (Smith) Allen, who was born Jan. 29, 1804. They lived at Ragged Island and Matinicus. He

John F. Martelock, son of John and Christine Marte- lock, was born in Germany, June 21, 1858. He married, Sept. 30, 1898, Lizzie (Vassell) Walker, daughter of Joseph and Mary (King) Vassell; she was born in Gorham, N. H., Feb. 25, 1876; she had a son Thomas by her first husband, who was drowned at Matinicus Rock, May 25, 1916, aged 22 years. John and Lizzie have resided on Wheaton's Island for the past twenty-five years or more.
McDANIEL
In the census of 1790, James McDaniel is listed as the head of a family of five, presumably himself, wife and three sons under sixteen years of age. He probably removed with his family soon after. He is not listed in the census of 1800 and there is no further record of him or of his children.
MILLER
Rufus Miller was born in Appleton, May 27, 1856, a son of Albert and Cecelia (McCurdy) Miller. His early life was spent in Appleton and Camden. Came to Matinicus in 1880, and married Feb. 4, 1883, Lydia J. Ames, daughter of Ezekiel and Annette (Young) Ames, who was born June 6, 1863. Their union was childless, but they extended a parents' care upon the orphan son of Mrs. Miller's brother, Elmer E. Ames, whom they took at birth and reared to man- hood. With the exception of a few years at Vinalhaven, they have always lived at Matinicus.

In the census of 1790, Alexander Nickels is listed as the head of a family of five-3 males and 2 females. In this year he deeded the northwesterly part of the island to Isaiah Tolman, and probably removed with his family, as no further record of them is found at Matinicus. This was Alexander, Jr., to whom his father conveyed the northern half of the island in 1783. It is not evident whether or not Alexander, Sr., ever resided here. When conveyed to his son there was a house and barn upon the land but it may have been used by other parties.

Jonathan Norton, probably son of Stephen, was born Mar. 8, 1790. He removed from Methuen, Mass., and mar- ried Deborah Andrews, daughter of Amos and Susannah (Young) Andrews. She was born June 13, 1799. Jon- athan died Apr. 19, 1857. They had children :

NUNAN
William E. Nunan, son of Charles F. and Emma (Hutch- ins) Nunan, was born at Cape Porpoise Oct. 17, 1882. He married June 1910, Edna Wagner, daughter of Daniel and Ella (Hall) Wagner. Reverend James H. Peardon, a popular and talented preacher, was pastor of the church from April 1909, to Oct. 1912, when he resigned and accepted a call at Southboro, Mass. Dea. Thomas2 Philbrook, born in England in 1624; died in Hampton Nov. 24, 1700. He married (1) Anne Knapp, daughter of Wm. Knapp, Sr., of Watertown, Mass. She died in Hampton May 17, 1667. William3 Philbrick (Thomas2, Thomas1), born in Hampton June 27, 1670; died in Greenland in 1714. He married in Hampton Oct. 10, 1689, Mary Neal, daughter of Walter Neal. About 1684 he removed to Greenland, N. H., and he and his wife joined the church there at its organization in 1706. Among their seven children was:
Jonathan4 Philbrook (William3, Thomas2, Thomas1), born about 1694; married in Greenland Jan. 31, 1716/17, Elisabeth Whitten. In 1728, he removed to Arundel (Ken- nebunkport), Me., then to Saco and afterwards to Bath (Georgetown). In 1743 he built a garrison house which sheltered four families from the Indians. He and his sons had a ship-yard near where the Custom House in Bath now stands. His sons William, Jushua and Job were soldiers in the first company in the Second Parish in 1757. he was captured by Indians and carried to Canada, but returned in about six weeks. He married (1) Mary, daughter of David Trufant of Georgetown (pub. there Nov. 12, 1759). He married (2) Dolly Hinckley at Castine; married (3) widow Hannah Coombs. He lived at Vinal- haven, then at Castine, then at 700 Acre Island, then at Vinalhaven again, where he died about 1802. He married Aug. 3, 1895, Susan Tolman, daughter of L. Stuart and Patience (Roberts) Tolman. She was born at Vinalhaven Aug. 4, 1875. They lived awhile at Matinicus and then removed to Vinalhaven. PLUMMER
Abraham Plummer, born about 1809, was a Methodist minister sent here about 1850, by the Methodist Home Missionary Society. He served here for several years, and was moderator in 1852. His wife's name was Betsey. Among other children, they had three sons who were preachers. John afterwards served here in that capacity, succeeding Joel Adams.
