HALL

It has been claimed that Ebenezer Hall, killed by the Indians on Matinicus, was a son of Hatevil Hall, who was

167

born in Dover, N. H., in 1707, married Sarah Furbish of Kittery, and died in Falmouth, Nov. 28, 1797. A comparison of dates will prove that this could not have been possible. The Ebenezer that was killed on Matinicus must have been born as early as 1710. His second wife, the widow Green, was born in 1714, and he was the father of a child in 1730. Hatevil's Ebenezer was not born until 1739-40. It is neces- sary to seek elsewhere for the origin of the Matinicus Halls.

George1. Hall and his wife Mary - came from Devon- shire, England in 1636. He became a proprietor of Dux- bury, Mass. in 1637, and removed to Taunton in 1639. He died in Taunton, Oct. 30, 1669, aged about 69, his widow Mary surviving. There were six children, one of whom was :

Samuel2 Hall, born in Taunton in 1644; died in Taunton between Jan. 25 and May 19, 1690. He married about 1663, Elisabeth White, daughter of Nicholas White, an early settler at Taunton. She died in 1707. There were ten children born in Taunton, including :

Ebenezer3 Hall (Samuel2, George1), born in Taunton, Mass. Mar. 19, 1677; married June 2, 1714, Jane Bumpas. This was probably not his first marriage, as it is absolutely certain that he had a son Ebenezer who must have been born prior to this date. Ebenezer3 was a farmer and resided in Mansfield, Mass. By a deed recorded in "York Deeds" (Book 16, Fol. 125), it is known that he purchased fifty acres of land on "Casko Bay" in 1718. Another deed, dated Falmouth, Oct. 22, 1733, and signed by Ebenezer Hall, and Jane his wife, conveys land to Thomas Westbrook and Samuel Waldo. By another deed executed in 1734, Ebenezer Hall conveys to his son Cornelius "all that my Farm lying in Falmouth at a Place called ye Back Cove near Seacomb's Point on wch Farm I now dwell." In this deed he also mentions his son Ebenezer, who was living there at that time. From the "Journal of the Rev. Thomas Smith of Portland," published in 1849, - "Ebenezer Hall had a houselot on Middle Street. There was a son of the same name. They both moved to the East (the Halls now living here are from another branch whose name was Hatevil,

168

who died in Falmouth in 1797, aged 90)." They moved in 1737. In 1741, Ebenezer Hall, styling himself "an inhabitant of Small Point," signed a petition praying that Small Point be set off from North Yarmouth and annexed to Georgetown, which was done. It is said that Ebenezer, Sr. was an officer in the English army at the siege of Louis- burg, Cape Breton, and that he and his son Ebenezer were at the battle of Minas, N. S. in the regiment of Col. Arthur Noble, Jan. 31, 1747. Ebenezer the father died at Annap- olis, N. S., in July of the same year.

Ebenezer4 Hall (Ebenezer3, Samuel2, George1), was probably born prior to the year 1710, before his father removed to Maine. He lived first at Back Cove, removed to Small Point in 1737, and was at Pemaquid in 1744. It would appear that primarily he was a sea-faring man and fisherman. He married (1) Hannah -, and they had at least the following children :

MARY b. Apr. 15, 1730; m. Elijah Moody.

SUSANNAH b. Aug. 11, 1732; m. William Proctor in 1760.

EBENEZER bapt. 1734; m. Susannah Young.

HANNAH m. Apr. 20, 1766, Peltiah Allen; lived in Windham, Me. and had a large family.

Ebenezer's first wife (Hannah) died when her daughter Hannah was one day old, and he then employed Mary (Bloom) Green to care for the child. She was the widow of David Green who was killed at Louisburg in 1745. She had a son Joseph, and a daughter Sarah, by her first husband. Ebenezer afterward took her for his second wife (pub. at Georgetown, May 9, 1746) and the following children were born to them:

PETER.

TABITHA.

PHEBE.

About 1749 or '50, Ebenezer with his family settled on Matinicus. He was killed there by the Indians, June 10, 1757. His widow, with her daughter (Sarah) by her first marriage, and children (Peter, Tabitha and Phebe) by her second marriage were taken by the Indians, and the children were never heard of afterwards. The children of Ebenezer

169

by his first wife were not on the island at the time of the attack; they grew to maturity, and the daughters married, as above stated. The mother, after returning from her captivity, married (3) Chipman Cobb, July 1, 1765. She and her husband resided in Falmouth awhile, and then removed to Gorham, where she died in 1803, at the age of eighty-nine years.

Ebenezer® Hall (Ebenezer4, Ebenezer3, Samuel2, George1), son of Ebenezer and Hannah -, was baptized in 1734, and died at Matinicus Feb. 14, 1813. He married (probably 1758) Susannah Young of Old York. She was the daughter of Job and Patience Young and was born Feb. 26, 1741. After the death of her husband she resided with her son John at Rockland, where she died Dec. 9, 1831. Fifteen children were born to them, all of whom lived to marry and have families of their own. This large family scattered, and their numerous descendants are now found in many parts of the country. A number of them are living at Matinicus.

In 1906, the descendants of Ebenezer who was killed by the Indians, formed a reunion association. They have pur- chased a bronze tablet which is set in a ledge near the site of Mr. Hall's death. The tablet bears the following inscrip- tion :
