History and Purpose. ~ Colgate University was found- ed as a theological seminary in 1817 by the Baptist Education Society of the State of New York. In 1846 the seminary became Madison University, and in 1890 its name was changed to Colgate University. The library manuscript collections specialize in the records of the University and in Hamilton village and Madison County historical material. Manuscripts are generally acquired by gift and deposit, but purchases of Colgate University items are made occasionally. The library is housed in a five-story, fire- proof, stone and brick building, constructed in 1890. Manuscripts are kept in a safe and in filing cabinets and cupboards in the librarian's office.

82. HUNTINGTON. - HUNTINGTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY, High Street and New York Avenue. Librarian, Mrs. Frederick E. Hall. Hours: 2 p.m. - 5 p.m., Fridays.
History and Purpose. - Founded in 1903 for the pur- pose of collecting and preserving material of historical signifi- cance relating particularly to the Town of Huntington. Manuscripts are purchased, duplicate items are exchanged occasionally, and gifts and conditional deposits are welcomed. The Society is housed in a three-story, nonfireproof, brick and frame structure, erected about 1750, with a fire-resistant vault affording adequate space for its manuscript holdings.

A. Church Records, including records of the First Universalist Church of Huntington, 1836-1913, and Miss Elmira OAKLEY'S "History of the West Hills Methodist Episcopal Church, " 1932. B. Mercantile Records, including: account book of Henry P. HAVENS, 1803-5, containing records of ships plying between Shelter Island and New York City; and Treasury Department records bearing on Atlantic coast shipping in the district of Sag Harbor, 1801-6.
C. Military Records, including: returns (5) of quarter- master stores received and issued at Sag Harbor and abstract of provisions on account of the United States consigned by Major B. CASE, 1814- 15; military papers of Jesse JARVIS and others of the Huntington Militia, 1815-25; and Civil War pass used by George F. BARR, dated Baton Rouge, March 3, 1863, and bearing signature of Capt. A. B. LONG.
