Handwritten copies of school newspapers, consisting mostly of essays, verses, school notes and miscel- laneous items, published by the Peoples Academy of Skaneateles, N. Y., for the period Jan. 3, 1844 - Dec. 1845, 45 pieces.

History and Purpose. - Springville Academy was in- corporated by the State Legislature March 19, 1827 and was chartered by the Regents of the University of the State of New York on Jan. 26, 1830. In 1867 the name of the Academy was changed to the Griffith Institute in consideration of the liberal donation givon to the institution by Archibald Griffith, of the town of Concord. The library was founded in 1830 to furnish reference and research material to faculty and students. It has no fields of specializa- tion and no policies as to the purchase, sale, or exchange of manu- scripts, but gifts and deposits are welcomed. It is housed in a three-story, fireproof, brick building, erected in 1909, with ade- quate space for the storage and use of records.

History and Purpose. ~ The library was established April 9, 1849, and received its first books from the old Court of Chancery Library in Saratoga Springs, which was abolished by the Constitution of 1846. It specializes almost exclusively in materials pertaining to law. It accepts gifts and makes purchases, but will not sell or exchange manuscripts. The library is housed in the Onondaga County Court House, a five-story, nonfireproof building, constructed in 1904-7, with adequate storage space.

A. Copies of lectures on law delivered in the Albany Law School by Professors EDWARDS and HARRIS, 1877- 78, 1 v.


B. Stenographic minutes of trials (7) held in the coun- ties of Oswego, Onondaga, Oneida and Cortland, 1885-1901, 17 v. (typed). Six of these were criminal trials, involving persons known locally.


There are 18 volumes, all of which are catalogued and arranged by subject. No qualifications are necessary to gain access to the manuscripts, and the custodian will furnish photostatic copies at current prices.

There are approximately 200 volumes and 10,000 pieces, which have been entirely arranged and catalogued with the aid of the Historical Records Survey. The Association keeps accession books, which contain brief descriptions of all gifts. Materials are accessible to historians and research workers without restrictions. Photostatic copies may be obtained at current ratos.
