98. KINDERHOOK. - KINDERHOOK MEMORIAL LIBRARY. Librar- ian, Charlotte Mills. Hours: 3 p.m. - 5 p.m., weekdays; also 7 p.m. - 9 p.m., Saturday.


History and Purpose. - Founded as a public library in 1928 to serve the reading and reference needs of the community. It does not purchase manuscripts, but will accept gifts or deposits of local interest. It is housed in a one-story, brick, fireproof building erected in 1935, with ample facilities for the storage and use of its records.

Records of the Dutch Reformed Church in Kinderhook, 1716-1864, 3 v. (typewritten), transcribed by the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society and edited by Royden W. VOSBURGH, 1920-21. Include rec- ords of births, baptisms, marriages, and deaths; lists of church members, including names of sub- scribers and members of the Consistory in 1716; and abstracts and translations of minutes of Consistory meetings. The volumes are replete with cx- planatory notes.

99. KINGSTON. SENATE HOUSE, Clinton Avenue. Custodian,


Kate E. Westbrook. Hours: 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., weekdays; closed Sundays and holidays.


History and Purpose. - The residence of Abraham Van Gaasbeek became known as the Senate House when the first session of the New York State Senate was held there Sept. 10 - Oct. 7, 1777. It was acquired by the State Oct. 29, 1887 and since then has been a State museum. The Senate House Association, which controls the Senato House in cooperation with the Division of Lands and Forests of the New York State Conservation Department, accepts gifts, but does not buy, soll, or exchange manuscripts. The Senate House is a one-story, brick building, erected in 1676 by Col. Wessel Wossel- son Ton Broeck. Few records are kopt there, most of the holdings of the Senate House Association being housed in the Museum building, crected in 1929.

100. KINGSTON. - SENATE HOUSE MUSEUM, 312 Fair Street. Custodian, Mary B. Terwilliger. Hours: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., daily, except Sundays and holidays.


History and Purpose. - The Senate House Museum was founded by legislative enactment in 1927 to house the memorabilia of Alton B. Parker and a collection of paintings by the American artist, John Vanderlyn, together with such other items as the Senate House Museum Association, Inc., might wish to place on ex- hibition. At present there are on exhibition several cases of early Kingston newspapers, carly Dutch imprints, official seals, and other material of historical interest. Gifts are accepted, but manuscripts are not purchased, sold or exchanged. The collec- tions are housed in a two-story, completely fireproof, stone build- ing, erected in 1927. The museum building occupies the same grounds as the Senate House, the only public building now standing directly connected with the organization of the government of Now York Stato; it was here that the first sessions of the State Sonate were held in 1777. Until 1939, manuscripts were housed in the

basement of the museum in wooden packing crates, but are now being arranged in file drawers for greater accessibility. Probably a special alcove on the second floor will eventually be reserved for the housing of the manuscript collection.

History and Purpose. ~ Originally founded in 1882 as the Lancaster Presbyterian Church Library, it was incorporated as the Lancaster Library Association in 1891 and was converted into the Lancaster Public Library in 1915. It has no fields of

specialization and no policies as to the purchase, sale, or exchange of manuscripts, but welcomes outright gifts. It is housed in a three-story, fireproof, brick building, erected about 1890, with ample room for expansion.

History and Purpose. - Founded in 1916, its object is to cooperate with the New York State Conference and the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, as set forth in Article 21 of the Constitution of the National Society. It has no fixed policy regarding manuscripts, but will accept gifts and deposits. It is housed in a two-story, wooden, nonfireproof build- ing, erected about 1840, with inadequate space for expansion.
