History and Purpose. ~ A Central Library was founded in Syracuse May 1, 1885, which library. was a combination of all the public libraries in the city. It was under the jurisdiction of the Board of Education. On December 13, 1893, under a stipulation from the Board of Regents, a new organization was put into effect; and finally in 1905 the library was established in the Carnegie Build- ing, where it is now housed. Its manuscript collections are kept in the American History Department, which specializes in genealogy and local history. Genealogical materials have been arranged alphabetically by family name, and local history and other papers, geographically. Three-fourths of the manuscripts have been catalogued by accessions, and 50 percent have been catalogued by pieces on more than 1,000 cards (3 x 5), which cite author, place, subject, and library call number. The materials are accessible without restrictions. Photostatic copies may be obtained at current prices.

History and Purpose. - The library was founded in 1870 primarily for the use of the faculty and students of the Uni- versity. There is no special field of interest insofar as manu- scripts are concerned. Gifts are accepted and purchases may be made; sale, exchange, and acceptance of conditional deposits do- pond upon the manuscripts and the restrictions. The library is a four-story, fireproof, brick building, constructed in 1905-7. Space is at present adequate but there is no planned storage for additional accessions. The building serves also as the School of Library Science.

It is housed in a two-story, fireproof, brick building, erected in 1914, with ample room for expansion.

Headquarters House is a three-story, granito building, a reproduction of the Hancock House which once stood on Beacon Hill in Boston, Massachusetts. Included are documents dealing with his acquisition of lands on the west shore of Lake Champlain, 1765- 90, a letter written to his son from New York City, July 22, 1791, describing his imprisonment for debt and hinting at his growing madness, an undated will of GILLILAND, an account (1818) of the State of New York to GILLILAND for his serv- ices as Commissioner of Military Stores for the Eastern District, and several land papers of William GILLILAND, Jr.

Consist mainly of deeds of the WING family, in- volving property in Glens Falls and vicinity, 1800-1864; also letters from Halsey R. WING and others relating to personal affairs.
There are 180 volumes, 1, 300 pieces, and 38 boxes and port- folios of loose manuscripts, all of which are catalogued and some 25 percent of which are arranged by author, place, or sub- ject and chronologically within each division. Any qualified researcher is allowed access to the material undor supervision. There is no photostat or other copy service.
