History and Purpose. - Founded in 1836 as the Select School Library, it became the Aldred Academy Library in 1843. With the incorporation of Alfred University in 1857, it became the Uni- versity Library. Its purpose is to serve the reference and re- search needs of students and faculty. It specializes in the col- lection of Seventh Day Baptist material and records relating to the history of Alfred Academy and University. No manuscripts are pur- chased, sold, or exchanged, but gifts and conditional deposits are welcomed. It is housed in a three-story, brick and stone, fire- proof building, erected in 1912, with inadequate space for its holdings.

Manuscripts, in English, Dutch, French, German, Latin, Italian, Slavic, and Spanish, relate largely to the history of the Franciscan Order in Now York and Now England from 1858. Among the many items in the collection are:

There are 125 manuscript volumes; 268 letters have been bound in chronological order with an index of addressees and the dates of writing; a large number of letters, certificatos, financial statements, and other documents have been arranged by subject. Arranged material represents about one-third of the manuscripts. There is no cataloguo. The Historical Records Survey has furnished the library with an inventory of its manu- scripts (34 typed pages).


Material is available to any researcher or author upon ap- plication to the librarian and under his supervision. There is at present no photostat equipment, but it is hoped soon to have microfilm copies available for interlibrary loans and for re- search scholars.

Y., 1833-44, 20 pieces, dealing with family news and religious reflec- tions, one letter (1844) referring to a serious "epidemack of black tongue" around Auburn, and others referring to hard times and the possibil- ity of moving to Ohio.


B. Civil War notes of Chauncey L. C. DITMARS, historian of the town of Babylon, including lists of sol- diors from Amityville and vicinity, and similar notes relating to the World War.


Approximately 1,800 pieces, unarranged and uncatalogued, accessible upon application to the librarian. There is no photo- stat service.


14. AMSTERDAM. - GUY PARK MANOR. Caretaker, Mrs. Wil- iam Shelly. Hours : 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., weekdays; 1:30 p.m. - 5 p.m., Sundays.


History and Purpose. - The Manor House was built in 1776 by Guy Johnson, nephew and son-in-law of Sir William Johnson. It was taken over by the State in 1917, rostored, set up as a museum under the custody of the Amsterdam Chapter of the D. A. R., and opened to the public in 1920. It is a two-story, stono, non- fireproof building, with adequate space for records.

History and Purpose. - The Society was founded at Auburn on March 22, 1876 chiefly through the efforts of the Rev. Charles Hawley, D. D., its first president (1876-85). It was re- organized in 1877 and declared its object to be "to discover, pro- cure by purchases, gift or otherwise, and preserve whatever re- lates to the natural, civil, military, industrial, literary and ecclesiastical history, and the history of science and art, of the State of New York in general, and the County of Cayuga in partic- ular." The Society is housed in a three-story, nonfireproof, brick and stone building, constructed in 1836, now the property of the Cayuga Museum of History and Art, with adequate space for records.

Complete archivos await placement as a permanent exhibit of the Society at the Museum. This is considered a part of the Society's possessions, and is being added to by Dr. Cornelius F. McCARTHY, of Auburn, N. Y.


The material is in process of being arranged and , when this work is finished, will be completely indexed by persons, places, dates, and subjects on catalogue cards. Manuscripts may be con- sulted by properly accredited persons on application to Dr. Wil- liam J. Hinke, Auburn Theological Seminary. Photostatic copies will be furnished, the price depending upon requirements.

History and Purpose. - The office of Saratoga Coun- ty Historian was founded in 1938 for the purpose of collecting and preserving historical materials pertaining particularly to Saratoga County. Manuscripts are not purchased or sold, but gifts are welcomed and exchanges may be mode. The office of the Saratoga County Historian is housed in a one -- story, wooden, nonfireproof building, erected about 1938, with inadequate space for records.
