1. ALBANY. - ALBANY INSTITUTE OF HISTORY AND ART, 125 Washington Ave., Director, John Davis Hatch, Jr. Hours: 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. weekdays; 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. Sundays.

History and Purpose. ~ The Albany Institute of History and Art was founded in 1791 by prominent persons of Albany and vicinity, among them representatives of the Livingston, Van Rensselaer, and DeWitt families, as "The Society, Instituted in the State of New York, for the Promotion of Agriculture, Arts, and Manufactures." Its first president was Robert Livingston, chair- man of the committee to draft the Declaration of Independence and first chancellor of the State of New York. In 1804 it was renamed "The Society for the Promotion of Useful Arts, " Robert Livingston continuing as president, and for 5 years it served as the organ of the State in distributing premiums for improvements in domestic manufactures. In 1825 the Society joined with "The Albany Lyceum of Natural History, " organized in 1823 undor the prosidency of Stephen Van Rensselaer, to form "The Albany Institute, " whose offi- cers sponsored the founding of the Albany Medical College, the Dudley Observatory, the Albany Law School, and other educational institutions. "The Albany Gallery of Fine Arts, "created in 1846, was absorbed by "The Albany Historical and Art Society" in 1898. The latter body, incorporated in 1886, was a transformation of the Albany Antiquarian and Art Association, organized a few months carlier for the purpose of proserving intact much of the material that had been displayed in the Albany Academy during the bicenten- nial celebration (July 1886). Finally in 1900, the "Albany Insti- tute" and the "Albany Historical and Art Society" were consolidated into "The Albany Institute and Historical and Art Society." The name was shortened to its present form when the organization was roincorporated in 1926. The object of the Institute is "to foster love of history and art and to promote cultural activities by furnishing a meeting ground and by collecting objects of history and art for exhibition and for access for study and educational purposes." The manuscript collections, relating largely to the history of old Albany and surrounding areas, are unusually rich in colonial and Revolutionary materials. Gifts are accepted, and purchases, sales, and exchanges may be made. The collections are housed in a two-story, fireproof, prossed brick building, with stone foundation and basemont, erected in 1907. The manuscripts are kept in a fireproof vault in the basement which has inadequate facilities for filing and storage.
