There are 150 volumes and approximately 150,000 pieces. All holdings have been arranged, except recent accessions; and work on the latter is progressing as rapidly as possible. All accessions have been catalogued on 1,650 index cards (3 x 5) which cite persons, places, dates, subjects, and cross-reference in- formation. Persons engaged in research may have access to the material upon application to the director and under supervision. There is no photostatic department, but arrangements may bo made for the copying of manuscripts.

History and Purpose. - Founded in 1836 for the ad- vancement of literature and science, it was made a public library in 1897. Its collections deal largely with local history from 1812 to date, but include material of general interest from all parts of the world, some dating back to the 16th century. Manu- scripts are not purchased, sold, or exchanged, but gifts are ac- cepted. It is housed in a three-story, steel, red brick, and sandstone building, constructed in 1886. This building is fire- proof and has adequate space for manuscripts.

History and Purpose. ~ D'Youville College was found- od in 1908 to provide young women with a liberal education. History and Purpose. ~ Founded in 1859 to serve as a reference library for the free use of the public. It specializes in materials relating to history, genealogy, travel, music (includ- ing American songs), costumo, architecture, literature, and medi- cine. Manuscripts are acquired through purchase, gifts, and deposit, and are never sold or exchanged. The library is housed in a one- story, fireproof, brick, steel, and red freestone building, erected in 1895, with a three-story, fireproof addition affording adequate space for the storage and consultation of manuscripts.

History and Purpose. - Founded in 1846 to provide reference and research materials for the students and faculty of the University of Buffalo. It has no fields of specialization and no policies as to the purchase, sale, or exchange of manuscripts; but gifts and conditional deposits are welcomed. It is housed in a three-story, fireproof, limostone building, erected in 1935, with ample space for the storage and use of records.


Holdings


Collection of Modern Poetry, 1888-1941, 1,850 items, comprising first drafts, rewrites, corrections, and final drafts of poems by some 280 contemporary Amer- ican and English poets, including many of the most celebrated of the 20th century.


There are 1,850 items, entirely arranged (by author) and catalogued. Materials are accessible to qualified students of English literature by permission of the custodian. Photostatic copies may be obtained at current rates.


30. CALEDONIA. - BIG SPRINGS HISTORICAL SOCIETY. Vice President, Mr. F. F. Keith. Hours: By appointment only.


History and Purpose. - Organized in 1936 to collect and preserve materials of historical interest. Manuscripts are acquired through gifts and loans, and are not bought, sold, or ex- changed. At present the Society's holdings are kept in the homes.

Holdings


A. Philip GARBUTT papers, 1819-78, 100 v. and 275 pieces, relating to his general store near Caledonia. Include account books, cashbooks, ledgers, daybooks, contracts, correspondence, bills of lading, and other business records. Also John W. GARBUTT papers (7), 1866-68, com- prising internal revenue licenses to carry on business and manufacturing.


B. Scottsville and Le Roy Railroad papers, 1836-38, 200 items, including surveyor's map, account sheets, pay rolls, contracts for grading and other work, copy of charter, list of subscribers to stock, minutes of meetings of Board of Direc- tors, and other documents.


c. Papers relating to the Erie and Genesee Valley Canals, 1840-78, 125 items, comprising shipping bills and other data.


D. Early Railroad and Express Company papers, 1849-75, 50 items, including bills of lading, correspond- ence, rate bills, and other papers.


E. MCDONALD papers, 1812-34, 10 items, including part- nership agreement between Alexander MCDONALD and his son, Donald (1814), the latter's naturali- zation papers (1812), promissory note (1823), release of dower (1832), early deeds (5), and last will and testament of Alexander MCDONALD (1834).


F. Dr. R. J. MENZIE papers, 1872-1911, 19 v., citing professional calls, operations, and fees charged by Dr. MENZIE, physician and surgeon in Caledonia.


G. Miscellaneous materials, including receipts for tuition and work at Genesee Wesleyan Seminary, 1840-41, autograph record of Peter SHEFFER, 1825, agreement of George SHEFFER with the Scottsville and Le Roy Railroad to furnish rails and other supplies, 1836, stock certificates, and other data.
