is the paper by George Fox, about 1668, by some miscalled "Canons" or "Carons and Institutions", but in Friends' minutes generally referred to as "George Fox's prpor of advice." This paper divided into nineteen numbered sections, was periodically read in meetings, and may be considered the foundation of the disciplines of the various Yearly Meetings. It is found engrossed in the records of many English Monthly Meetings, and is also engrossed in the first volume of minutes of Woodbridge (now plainfield) M .!!. , established 1686. It is printed in full in Beck's "London Friends' Meetings", (London, 1869).
Vol. 214, (See. description in New York M.M. list ) with this document engrossed in it, was sent over from England, addressed to
"In New England

urging them to drew up accounts of sufferings, with exact data, "to be laid before the King and Parlament & ye committees of ve Plantations," and also to send account to the London Meeting of all who walked not uprightly. "And friends for ye further Information here is alsoe sent a coppie of a paper which was given forth for ye Monthly and Quarterly Meetings in England wch direct you how you are to proceed & of wch things you are to take care." "And what sufferings you have, to send over direct them either to John Rousee at Tho. Yoaklegs at ye Reed Dragon in Towers ditch in London, or to William Crouch Vpholstor in Devenshire house with out Bishops gate who are ordered to receive Sufferings and wht else may come from Severall plertations & Islands beyond seas" - "G.ff"
Then follows the form of marriage certificate, then the paper of advice above referred to, and another opistle, signed at the end (in the copyists hand ) "G.ff." and dated the 15th of 4th month 1670.
This was sent over to the Long Island group of Friends, undoubted- ly by George Fox, and undoubtedly by the hand of John Burnyeat, who was present when the first minute was written in it, "ye 23d day of . 3c.month: 1671." having landed in New York just before this mecting. On his return from New England he attended the fall Half Years Meeting, which began "about the eighth day 'of the eighth month" 1671. At this latter meeting three Ranters insisted on roading a manuscript book they had written against George Fox's papers of advice, which were read at the meeting, and apparently in book form. (see John Burnyeat's journal, "Truth Exalted," Ist edition, 1691, 5. 40-12 ).

in Respects to larriages &c to be Red Once Every quarter in Each Respective monthly meeting wch shall first be after ye Quarterly meeting in Every plase & ffriends are desired to bring their Children & Servants to ye Same as much as may be."
nt Flushing M.b. 7th Mio. 1701 "Jt is agreed at this meeting yt G.ff. papers Relating to marriag & good order be Red at ye next 5 day meeting in this place."
At Y.K. 1708, "A paper Relateing to good order in managing affears in meetings being Refered by ye Quarterly to ye yearly meeting which accordingl was Read" and ordered recorded. Following this is another minute "Scre- think being spoken to Concerning ye paper Recorded in ye meeting boock Con- corning Sundry particulars" a large committee appointed to consider the same and bring a report to the next Y.l ..
At Y.l. 1709. "ye matter Refered to this Yearly meeting about marriag &c being this day Considered & ffriends Unanimusly gave their sence that ye orders already established among us are full in that case & ffriends are de- sired Carefully to put them in practice in all their monthly meetings."
The loss of the Yearly and Quarterly Meeting minutes for the period 1721 to 1745 prevents our knowing what was done in the matter of codifying the discipline during that time, except as reflected in the minutes of the three M.l'se then in existence, and they show very little.
At Y.1 .. 1759, "This Meeting requests and desires that each Quarterly Meeting belonging to this Meeting do bring to the next Yearly Meeting the Rules of Discipline that they now have and are in the Fractice of that they may be revised and added to as occasion may be ."
At Purchase (.1 .. 5th mo. 3. 1760, "At this meeting it is concluded to send our rules of discipline to our yearly meeting, and whereas Fensylvania discipline, has for some time been put in practice amongst us, and has been well approved of, it is concluded that the same be sent to the Yearly Meeting, with such acts as have been passed in our meeting, which the representatives are desired to copy out, and carry to the yearly meeting."
At Y.L .. 1760 a committee was appointed to revise the Discipline, which reported to a later sitting various additions and amendments, showing that the discipline then in use had at least 52 pages and 66. sections. One of the additions was "The Freparative Leeting may keep a Record but not have author- ity to Disown any member the Monthly Quarterly and Yearly only haveing a Right and authority so to do."
In 1763 the Y.L. directed each li.M. to have a copy of the Discipline. The Women's K.l ... does not appear to have had their separate copy of the Discipline till later.
The Discipline was first printed in 1800, 250 copies, and two. copics were to be furnished to cach quarterly, Monthly and Freparative Meeting, and such meetings were directed to forward their books of Discipline thon in use to the leeting for Sufferings. Very few copies seem to have escaped the destruction consequent on their return. It was much later when each family had a copy of the Discipline, and this fact undoubtedly has something to do with the frequent disownments for infringements of Discipline.
