PREPARATIVE MEETINGS IN NEW YORK CITY. (H) The origin of Preparative Meetings and of Overseers seems to be in the following minute.

These Preparative Meetings seem to have been composed of a few selected mer- bers and some meetings may not have had a Poli. The following minutes of Flush- ing M.M. settled them with more regularity.

At different periods there were two P.Ms. of the Northern District and two of the Western District, in New York City.

Establisned 16 , having been a meeting for worship be- fore 1681, when the K .... decided that the First day meeting remain at Robert Story's and the Fifth day meeting at Lewis Morris's until a public meeting house is provided, and committee appointed to hire or otherwise provide a house. A house seems to have been hired until 1696 when land on Green St. , 40 x 80 feet, was purchased, and a building committee appointed. The deed for this land, to- Bether with later deeds, are mentioned under the "Miscellaneous" records of New York M.if.

Mary Weatherhead and Dorothy Waugh preached in the streets in 6th month (August) 1657, but the first meeting under a roof seems to have been held by Villian Edmundson in 1671 in an inn.
