THE UNION GAS AND ELECTRIC CO.
The Union Gas and Electric Company, general offices at Fourth and Plum streets, is one of Cincinnati's large publie service corporations which has a very long and honorable history, dating back to 1839, the year of the establishment of the Cincin- nati Gas Light and Coke Co., which was developed by gradual stages into the present enormous business serving over 130,000 customers with gas and electricity at astonishingly low rates.
Cincinnati is served by this concern with natural gas, which is brought all the way from the West Virginia fields, one hun- dred and sixty-five miles away, and although it is admittedly far superior to the manufactured article, it nevertheless is sold at 30 cents a thousand cubic feet, somewhat less than one-eleventh the original price charged by the old Cincinnati Gas Light and Coke Co., in 1839.

It is to the great credit of this company to say that in the sale of its original stock not a dollar was paid to any broker or agent in the way of commission. Dr. Cross donated his time to the company for six months, and in that time brought together men whose total individual fortunes aggregated over $150,000,000. At the present time its Board of Directors, seven of whom are Presidents of banks, are among the richest and most prominent men of the state.
The company is particularly favored by having in its execu- tive and field forces men of broad and varied insurance experi- ence and they have introduced a mimber of new policies which have proven very popular. Its business has always been clean and high class and its mortality rate has been remarkably low.
In 1909, realizing there was a good field for health and acci- dent insurance written in connection with its regular policies. this department was added and it has grown steadily from the first and has become very important.
Its business extends all over Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Georgia, and it has representatives in all of the main centers in these states and insurance in force approximating $10,000,000.

OSCAR H. SCHMIDT. -
Proprietor of the Oscar H. Schmidt Excursion Boat Line.
Oscar H. Schmidt, 222 West Third street, Newport, Ky., and his famous little moonlight dance boat, the Estelle, are well known to those Cincinnatians who indulge in river parties.
The Estelle was built in 1907 with the idea of just using it to care for family parties and small crowds. Later the idea came to Mr. Schmidt that if he could provide a fine space for dancing it would add materially to the pleasure of such trips, so he built the moonlight dance boat as an auxiliary. This boat provides a fine dance floor.
Both boats are nicely filled and electric lighted. The Estelle has cabins and that all-important place, "a galley," or in the words of the layman, a kitchen where food can be prepared.
Mr. Schmidt is a genial host and is well liked by the many patrons that call on him each year.
