Judge Hollister was born on Mount Auburn, Sept. 11, 1856, the son of Hon. George B. Hollister, a prominent Cincin- nati lawyer who died in 1898, and Laura (Strait) Hollister. Judge Hollister's an- cestry was of Colonial and Revolutionary stock, he having had three great-grand- fathers who were soldiers in the Revolu- tion. One ancestor was an officer in the Pequoit wars and King Philip's war. Yale graduate, class of 1878; Cincinnati Law School, 1880; admitted to practice same year. Assistant prosecuting attorney for Hamilton County 1881-2; judge court com- mon pleas 1893-1903. In March, y910, appointed by President Taft, judge of the district court of the United States for the southern district of Ohio. On June 2, 1887, Judge Hollister was married to Miss Alice Keys, the daughter of Samuel Barr and Julia (Baker) Keys.

Throughout the intervening years he has been connected with the life in- surance business and the steps in his orderly progression are easily discernable. lle acted for some time as a clerk in the offices of the Union Central Life Insur- ance Company and then his ability won him recognition in promotion to the posi- tion of cashier. Subsequently he became treasurer, and in 1906 was elected to the presidency of the company. Under his able management the Union Central Life Insurance Company has become a gigantle organization, with assets of eighty mil- lion dollars, and its policies represent three hundred millions In insurance. He
thus passed on to positions of executive control, bending his energies largely to organization, to constructive efforts and administrative direction. Possessing broad, enlightened and liberal-minded views, faith in himself and in the vast potentialities for development inherent in his country's wide domain, and specific needs along the distinctive line chosen for his, life work, his has been an active ca- reer, in which he has accomplished im- portant and far-reaching results, contrib- uting in no small degree to the develop- ment of financial interests in Ohio, and from which he himself has also derived substantial benefits.
Mr. Clark is a director of the First National Bank, of Cincinnati; is a mem- ber of the executive committee and on the board of managers of the Association of Life Insurance Presidents of New York; is a member of the Avondale Meth- odist Church; is president of the Com- mercial Club; and a member of the Busi- ness Men's Club, the Queen City Club, the Country Club and the Hamilton County Golf Club.
In this city, in 1883, was celebrated the marriage of Mr. Clark to Carrie Marqua, daughter of Philip Marqua. Their chil- dren are Jesse R., Jr., Augusta, Marianne, Philip Jerome and Roger.

FREDERICK AUGUST GEIER.
President Cincinnati Milling Machine Co. Director Several Banking Institutions.
From bookkeeper to president and principal shareholder of the Cincinnati Milling Machine Company, a concern which, in its ramifying branches of trade reaches throughout the world, is the rec- ord of Mr. Geier-not yet fifty years of age.
Born in Cincinnati on June 23, 1866, a son of Philip and Louise Geier, he grad- uated from the Woodward High School with the class of 1884. Two years later he engaged in the banking business in Newton, Kansas, but returning to his native city in September, 1887, he be- came interested in the company of which he is now president. This company em- ploys over one thousand people, and has recently completed a magnificent office and factory which is one of the most modern plants in existence in regard to shop hygiene, lighting, etc., and is sit- uated in Oakley. Under Mr. Geier's di- rection great improvements have been made in the method of inanufacture, and the machinery turned out is of the high- est possible grade. The products of the company have taken first prize at inter- national expositions, one of the more re- cent ones being the grand prize at the Brussels Exposition. During his long connection with this manufacture Mr. Geier has mastered every detail of the business so that his supervision is based upon practical knowledge as well as the demands of the trade.
Mr. Geier is a director of the German National Bank, and of the Central Trust & Safe Deposit Company, and has been president of the National Machine Tool Builders' Association. For five years he served as a Trustee of the University of Cincinnati and as chairman of its board. He is also the vice-president of the Nation- al Society for the Promation of Industrial Education, a director of the Ohio Me- chanics Institute, and belongs to the Bus- iness Men's, Queen City, Optimist and Commercial Clubs. His political allegi- ance is given to the Republican party, and his religious faith is evidenced by his membership in Mount Auburn Presbyter- ian Church. In public life he adheres closely to the things which are most worth while, and he is always to be found among the supporters of movements calcu- lated for the general public's welfare.
Mr. Geier is married and has three children, Frederick, Helen and Virginia.

The subject of our sketch was reared on a farm in Ohio, but moved to Illinois in 1869. Although his educational advan- tages had been limited, he had made so good use of his opportunities that at the age of nineteen he took a position as school teacher, in which line of life he continned for ten years. le advanced rapidly in his profession, occupying the position of Superintendent of Schools in Newman, Arcola and Watseka, Illinois. In 1880 he resigned his position at the latter place to accept a district agency for the Union Central Life Insurance
Company of Cincinnati. After two years he was summoned to Chicago to serve as special agent for that company. In 1884 Mr. Waters was made assistant su- perintendent, in which position he con- tinued for nearly ten years, ably assist- ing in the building up of this important department. In 1893 he was appointed superintendent of the Western Depart- ment. In 1895 he was called to the Home Office of the company to assist the presi- dent in the Agency Department. In 1904 he was elected superintendent of agents, which position he occupies at the present time, and in 1906 he was elected a mem- ber of the Board of Directors.
