Born March 4, 1845, at Delhi Township, Ohio; son of Peter T. and Catherine E. Williams. Attended the public schools of Cincinnati and is a graduate of tlie Pulte Medical College of Cincinnati. Has been connected with the directory busi- ness since boyhood and when the Will- iams Directory Company was incorpor- ated in 1900 was made president of same. He is a member of the Association of American Directory Publishers and served as its president for three terms. He is also a trustee in said association. In 1870 he was married to Miss Caroline Rieder, of Cincinnati.

WILLIAM GILBERT.

Born June 2, 1859, in Brockville, Ont., Canada. Came to Cincinnati in April, 1881; worked as molder for various fac- tories, and in 1889 organized the Buckeye Foundry Company. In February, 1909, he was one of the organizers of the Cin- cinnati Steel Casting Company, of which he was elected President. He also owns a one-half interest in the Dreses Machine Tool Company. In 1886 Mr. Gilbert was united in marriage to Miss Helen Butler and they have five children, William Jr., Nellie, Bertha, Cornelia and Charles. He has attained the thirty-second degree of the Scottish Rite in Masonry, is also a Noble of the Mystic Shrine and a life member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks.

Born July 19, 1876, at Newport, Ky .; son of Harry and Cecelia Denis. Attended public school at Bond Hill, O., until thir- $ teen years of age, when he began his business career as office boy in a whole- sale grocery. After working ten years with one house decided to go West in the concrete construction business. After working in the West one year returned to Cincinnati and entered the employ of the Cincinnati and Hammond Spring Company, of which he has since been elected Secretary Treasurer and Manager. Is a Mason and Second Vice President of the Carriage Makers' Club.

Studied law at the University of Cincinnati and re- ceived the degree of L. L. B. in .Inne. 1899. Was appointed Assistant City So- licitor from January 1, 1906 to January 1, 1908. In 1909 entered inta partner- ship with Marison R. Waite under the firm name of Waite & Schindel. He Is a member of the Cincinnati Bar Associa- tion and President of the City Club of Cincinnati.


JOHN C. DAVIS.


A Cincinnati Cigar Manufacturer; Four Hundred-Twelve Vine Street.


Born May 15, 1841. at Cincinnati, O .: son of John and Margaret B. Davis. Edu- cated in the public schools of this city and is the oldest cigar man in the State of Ohio, having observed the anniversary of his fifty-fifth year in business at 412 Vine street, Cincinnati, O., on February 1. From his doorway Mr. Davis has seen lower Vine street change from a thor- oughfare of vacant lots in 1859 to one of the main arteries of the city in 1914. Mr. Davis is proud of his reputation as the oldest cigar man in America, travel- ing salesmen referring to him as the "Nestor" and the "Dean" of the tobacco business. In 1856, three years before he started in business, Mr. Davis was se- lected as one of the pages from the pub- lic schools of Cincinnati, for the National Democratic Convention which convened in that city and nominated James Bucha- nan for President. During the convention he became acquainted with Benjamin Butler, who afterwards became a general in the Union Army. "After the war started," writes Mr. Davis, "I became a member of the army that defended this city during the Kirby Smith raid." "On July 19, 1866, I was elected President of the Live Oak Baseball Club, the first baseball club organized west of the Al- leghany Mountains." He is a member of the Chamber of Commerce: N. C. Harmony Lodge F. & A. M., No. 2: Cin- cinnati Chapter No. 2 Royal Arch; Cin- cinnati Commandery No. 3 K. T .; A. & A. Scottish Rite, Valley of Cincinnati, and Society of Past Masters.

Appointed Judge of the Superior Court of Cincinnati in 1891 to fill the unexpired term of Judge Noyes. Elected judge of the Common Pleas Court of Hamilton County in 1892. Became a professor in the Cincinnati Law School in 1896. Was appointed trustee of the Cincinnati Southern Railway in 1897, and was elected president of the Board in 1904.

Was married in 1889 to Flora May Casler at Little Falls, N. Y., and has one daughter, Mildred Snyder. He is a mem- ber of the Elks.

Springer Homestead, the House of Refuge, National Lafayette Bank and old College Hall on Walnut street. C. W. Walter supplemented his public school education by study in the Wooster, O., University, from which he was graduated with the Ph. B. degree in 1888. Became identified with the Cincinnati Milling Ma- chine Company in 1900. Married Marga- ret, daughter of Philip Geier, 1902. Mr. Alms has, for more than forty- five years, been engaged in the dry goods business in Cincinnati, and during a large part of this time the Alms & Doepke Com- pany, of which he is president, has been one of the most prominent business con- cerns in the city.


Mr. Alms is a native of Cincinnati, born November 25, 1842, a son of Gerhardt Heinrich Alms, who was born in the kingdom of Hanover, Germany; and Louisa (Behrens) Alms, also a native of Hanover, Germany. He attended public schools of Cincinnati, and took a course at Gundry College. His first business ex- perience was gained as a clerk in the dry goods store of Betty & Williams, and later he was associated in the same capacity with Schwartz & Hafner. In August, 1865, at twenty-two years of age, he and his brother, Frederick, and Wm. F. Doepke organized the firm of Alms & Doepke. As an evidence of the remark- able early success of this firm the fact is cited that during the first sixteen months of its existence it sold over One Hundred and Eighty-four Thousand Dol- lars worth of goods, paid all obligations, together with six per cent. on the original Ten Thousand Dollar investment of the proprietors. Today this business ocenples its own seven-story structure, and pro- vides employment to over one thousand people.


Mr. Alms is director of the Union Savings Bank & Trust Company of Cin- cinnati; director of the Equitable Fire Insurance Company, and the Citizens Mortgage and Loan Company: is a trustee of the Cincinnati Law School, the Cin- cinnati College of Music, and the chil- dren's Hospital. He is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Business Men's, Commercial, Queen City, and Cli- cinnati Country Chibs; a member of the


Lutheran but an attendant of the Epis- copal Church.


On February 22, 1866, he married Miss Elizabeth Bogen, a daughter of the one time well-known pork packer and wine merchant, now deceased. Four children blessed the union. They are Louise, who married James Burdsall, of Avondale, and has one son, Alms; Mrs. Evalene Smock,, who is the mother of one daugh- ter, Elizabeth; Mrs. Henry Clay Ebert, and Emma, who became the wife of B. D. Pancoast.
