Received elementary educa- tion in Cincinnati public schools; went to Heidelberg to attend the university and received degree of Ph. D. there, having done chemical research work with Bunsen. Member American and British Associations for the Advance- ment of Science; American Chemical Society; Chemists Club, N. Y .; Losante- ville Country Club. Dr. Alfred Springer and Dr. Alfred Springer, Jr., are the chemists of the firm of Alex Fries & Bro., which was started early in the fif- ties of the last century by Mr. L. Spring- er and Mr. Alexander Fries under the name of Springer & Fries. The firm at that time manufactured coal oil and par- affin products made from cannel coal, petroleum not yet having come into gen- eral use. Later after the general intro- duction of petroleum, Mr. Alexander Fries (Mr. L. Springer having already died) took up the manufacture of or- ganic acids, and flavoring extracts. The present owners are Mr. Gus R. Fries and Dr. Alfred Springer, the son of the founder of the firm.
