Y. M. C. A. AND Y. W. C. A.
The work of the Young Men's Christian Association grew so rapidly and expanded to such an extent that it was necessary for the National War Work Council to launch another campaign during the year 1917, and this campaign was conducted from November 11-19 to obtain a fund of $35,000,000. Washington County was given a quota of $67,000. A county organization was formed with Joseph A. Herron of Monongahela as chairman, R. S. Winters, treasurer, Lloyd O. Hart, secretary. The Y. W. C. A. joined with the Y. M. C. A., the former receiving fifteen per cent of the total collected in the county. The quota for Washington County was $67,000, and at the close of the campaign the pledges amounted to about $90,000. Washington's quota was $25,000, and at the close of the campaign the pledges amounted to $35.500. One remarkable thing in connection with this campaign was that, with the exception of $68.50, the total amount subscribed was collected. The members of the executive committee for Washington was composed of the follow- ing men: R. W. Knox, chairman, R. S. Winters, treasurer, Lloyd O. Hart, secretary, J. D. Bigger, John M. Spriggs, C. H. Lambie, and G. G. Oliver.
The local Young Men's Christian Association extended to all men in uniform the entire privileges of the associa- tion without charge, during the period of the war; and each man in the Army and Navy, upon receiving his dis- charge and by making application, is given three months' free membership.
Besides contributing money to the work seven men gave their service for a period of time in our home can-
tonments and overseas. The following men served the association overseas: W. L. Reddick, France; A. B. Dunn, France; Robert Good, Italy; Rev. Huber Ferguson, Harry A. Jones, Rev. W. P. McConkey, and J. W. Moninger served in our home cantonments.
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
During the early spring of 1918 the Washington Coun- cil No. 1083 conducted a campaign for funds to support the Army and Navy work of the Knights of Columbus. The quota for Washington and Canonsburg was $8,000. This campaign was conducted on a monthly collection plan and extended over a period of more than one year. The final results were that a receipt was drawn to Mr. P. H. Wheeler, treasurer, for the sum of $12.307.34.
