He was placed with 669th Aero Squadron and transferred to Kelly Field. Was made Sergeant and was honor- ably discharged from service January 14, 1919.

Wm. I. Lowers, Sr., Allison Avenue, Died Wednesday Morning


William I. Lowers Sr., 67, died at 11:05 o'clock Wednesday morning at his home, 1045 Allison avenue, after an illness of six months. He had resided in Washington for many years and was a tube mill worker.


His wife, Katherine Lowers, sur- vives, with the following sons and daughters; Mrs. T. R. Abbott and Mrs. Arthur Dowler, both of Ros- coe; William, Andrew, John, Paul, Samuel and Daniel Lowers, all of Washington. Two brothers also survive, Lincoln Lowers of Morgan- town, W. Va., and Frank Lowers of Fayette City; and three sisters, Mrs. Emma Jane Abbott, of Ros- coe; Mrs. Anna Cramer, of Newell, and Mrs. J. R. Flinn, of Detroit, Mich.


Funeral services will be held at the home, 1045 Allison avenue, Fri- day night at 7:30 o'clock. Burial will be made at Jeannette Saturday morning.

In Pennsylvania the new one per cent general sales tax went into effect to raise about $15,000,000 for inemployment relief.


Simultaneously the State's uneni- loyment relief program to provide ,500,000 jobless became effective. The emergency relief sales tax brought a general increase in the price of tangible commodities. A benny was added here, a dollar there.


Rich and poor alike bear the burden of this new levy which will be in effect for a six months pe- riod. The banker, the street-sweep- er, the coal-miner, the lawyer, the brick-layer, the broker, all must "chip in" to care for the State's. destitute.


Furniture, foodstuffs, cigarets, soft drinks, clothing, automobiles. radios, shoes, hats, cosmetics, coal, newspapers, gasoline, and all other tangible merchandise come under the new tax.


State authorities already have decreed that utilities, transporta- tion companies and amusement concerns are exempt from the provisions of the tax. The law especially provides that agricul- tural produce sold directly .by the

Sent to Camp Forrest and placed with 6th Provision Company. He was transferred to Camp Sherman, there he was placed with the Ist Provision Company and was honorably discharged from service December 20, 1918.

HANLEY, JAMES-Son of James and Catherine Hanley. Born March II, 1894. Enlisted with Company H, IIoth Infantry, Iron Division. He sailed over- seas April 12, 1918. Was in many large battles. Returned to the United States in May, 1919, and was honorably discharged on the twenty-third of that month.


HANLEY, EDWARD-Son of James and Catherine Hanley. Born August 4, 1893. Enlisted June 22, 1916, with Company H, IIoth Infantry, Iron Division. He served on the border and sailed for France April 12, 1918. Was gassed at Fismes, and re- turned to the United States in May, 1919. Private Hanley was honorably discharged from ser- vice May 23, 1919.


HARDEN, HOWARD-Son of Frank Harden, 616 College St. Born June 10, 1898. Enlisted with Company H, 18th Infantry, Ist Division, September 1, 1917, and was sent to Gettysburg. He was sent to France in November, 1917, was in most of the drives, received many wounds, and was given a Croix de Guerre by the French Government. Private Harden returned to the United States, was honorably discharged in January, 1919, but reƫntered the service.


HARDEN, HARRY-Son of Frank Harden, 616 College St. Born in 1900. Enlisted in May, 1918, at Columbus Barracks and was sent to Fort Russell. He was assigned to Battalion B, 7Ist Field Artillery, transferred to Camp Knox, Ky., and was hon- orably discharged from service in February, 1919, but reƫnlisted.

Private Haught returned to the United States February 28, 1919, and was honorably discharged from service March 14.


HAYDEN, PAUL E .- Son of Mr. and Mrs. George Hayden, 12 Payne St. Born February 5, 1897. Was inducted into service August 6, 1918, and sent to Camp Custer. HAYNES, LESTER EWING -Son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Haynes, Houston. Born Febru- ary 18, 1895. Enlisted in Avia- tion Service in October, 1917. HINCY, WILLIAM A .- Son of William C. Hincy, 211 E. Col- lege St. Born January II, 1900. Enlisted May 31, 1917, with Com- pany H, Hoth Infantry, 28th Division, and was sent to Camp Hancock. He sailed overseas from Camp Merritt, May 3, 1918. Was burned with mustard gas in the 5th German offensive. Pri- vate Hincy returned to the United States May II, 1919, and was honorably discharged the twenty-third of that month.


HIRST, WILLIAM-Son of Thomas and Mary Jane Hirst. Born November 26, 1900. En- listed in February, 1918. Was sent to Columbus Barracks, placed with Company 6, Trench Mortar Battery. He sailed over- seas from Camp Merritt and was wounded by machine gun fire. Returned to the United States in May, 1919, and was honorably discharged from service later that month.

Returned o the United States April 9, 1919, and was honorably dis- charged ten days later.

Holmes was hon- orably discharged from Camp Sherman December 29, 1918, with the rank of Sergeant.


HOLSING, W. FREDRICK -Son of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Holsing, 248 Smithfield St. Born December 25, 1896. Enlisted in June, 1918. He was stationed at Bucknell University, placed with the Engineer Reserve Corps. Made Sergeant and was honor- ably discharged in December, 1918.


HOPKINS, WALTER-Son of Mrs. John Williams, Main St., Midland. Born January 6, 1896. Enlisted May 14, 1918. HOUSTON, ROBERT-Son of Mrs. Robert Lytle, Meadow- lands. Born March 18, 1898. Enlisted July 26, 1918, with the Marine Corps. He was sent to Paris Island, Quantico, and was placed on patrol duty in Cuba.


HOWARD, HARRY E .- Son of Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Howard, Meadowlands. Enlisted in the Infantry and went overseas as a Ist Class Private. He was wounded in the left foot at Chateau Thierry. Returned to the United States and was hon- orably discharged from service January 6, 1919.


HOWARD, ROBERT O .- Son of S. A. Howard, Meadow- lands. Born July 31, 1886. Was inducted into service July 26, 1918. Sailed for Russia with the 167th Company and went with that outfit to Port Royal.


HOWARD, WILLIAM McCALLISTER-Son of S. A. Howard, Meadowlands. Born March 4, 1893. Enlisted August 29, 1915, with the Marine Corps. He was in service in Mexico, sailed for France in December, 1917, was in a great many battles, and was gassed at Chateau Thierry. Howard was made sergeant, returned to the United States in February, 1919.


HOXWORTH, JOHN POR- TER-Son of Mr. and Mrs. John Hoxworth, Canonsburg. Born March 24, 1895. Went into service October 17, 1917. Was sent to Sand Fort, Tex., and was placed in the Secret Service of Company E, 28th Infantry, Ist Division. He sailed overseas June 14, 1918.


HUGHES, WILLIAM-Son of Mr. and Mrs. William Hughes, 311 Duquesne Ave. Born October 24, 1895. Was in- ducted into the service July 25, 1918. Was sent to Camp Sher- man and placed with the 330th Fire and Guard Battalion.

INGANI, TONY, Donner Ave .- Born in 1893, was in- ducted into service April 5, 1918, sent to Camp Lee, and placed with 332nd Infantry. He was honorably discharged from the service of the United States in December, 1918.


INGRAM, THOMAS ALEX- ANDER-Son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Ingram, 22 Chartiers Ave. Born July 24, 1900. En- listed July 28, 1918, with the Ordnance Department. He was sent to Columbus Barracks, then to Camp Hancock, and was hon- orably discharged from service February 27, 1919.


INGRAM, JOHN C .- Son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Ingram, 22 Chartiers St. Born January, 1894. Entered service Decem- ber 6, 1917. He was sent to Camp Sherman, Kelly Field, then to West Port. Was made Ser- geant and was honorably dis- charged from service February 14, 1919.


JEFFERS, MICHAEL Z .- Son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Jeffers, McGovern. Born Janu- ary 27, 1898. Enlisted Septem- ber 25, 1918, in the United States Navy. He was sent to Hampton Roads, and was honorably dis- discharged from service January 28, 1919.
