WASHINGTON'S PART IN

The Washington Red Cross Chapter

T IE Washington County Chapter of the American Red Cross was organized April 6, 1917. The following officers were elected : Mr. J. R. McCreight, Chairman; Mrs. Robt. R. Reed, V. Chairman: Mrs. Wm. F. Borchers, Secretary; John W. Warrick, Treasurer. Owing to ill health Mr. McCreight's resigna- tion was accepted July II, 1917. E. Tyler Davis was elected chair- man and served until September 6, when he was called for the Officers' Reserve Camp. R. M. Paxton followed Mr. Davis as chairman of the local chapter and served until May 13, 1919.

After organization it was found necessary to open a central office to be used as a headquarters for the distribution of yarn and the receiving of membership. The old Citizens National Bank was vacant at the time and the Directors of that bank very generously . donated the use of the building for the purpose. This building was used until late in the fall of 1917 when the office was moved into the basement of the new Citizens National Bank where it is still maintained, free of rent, light, heat and janitor service.

As interest in the work increased auxiliaries were formed throughout the county and under the leadership of R. G. Miller and Professor William L. Moore and their assistants a total of 59 branches and auxiliaries were formed, some of the larger of these forming units working directly under them. The Washington County Chapter, however, did not include Donora or Charleroi which had their own chapters. Charleroi Chapter extending south along the Monongahela River and embracing West Brownsville, which later became affiliated with the Brownsville branch of the Fayette County Chapter.
