Charlottesville, the county seat of Albe- marle, is beautifully and healthfully situated in the picturesque valley of the Rivanna, be- tween the Blue Ridge and Southwest Moun- tains, at the intersection of the Southern and Chesapeake and Ohio Railways. It is re- nowned for being the seat of the University of Virginia, and also its close proximity to Monticello, which signifies "Little Mountain," the residence and burial place of Thomas Jef- ferson, the immortal founder of the Institu- tion. The University was founded in 1819 and opened to students in 1825. It has been attended of recent years by about six hundred students annually, exclusive of those who attend the private summer classes, amount- ing to one hundred or more on an average.
Charlottesville is 97 miles distant by rail from Richmond, 117 from Washington. The population is about 7,000 and the society most excellent.
