Albemarle county, situated at the eastern base of the Blue Ridge mountains, in the far- famed Piedmont region of Virginia, was formed from Goochland in 1744, and is one of the largest, richest and most populous in the State. It has for its boundaries on the east the counties of Fluvanna and Louisa; north, Orange and Greene; west, Nelson coun- ty and the Blue Ridge mountains, which di- vide it from Augusta, and south, James river, which separates it from Buckingham. The lands in this county, which are of a superior quality and in a high state of cultivation, are watered and drained in the north by the Ri- vanna and on the south Hardware rivers and their tributaries. The James river division of the Chesapeake and Ohio railroad skirts its southern border, and the main line traverses it from east to west, and the Southern rail- way from north to south. The principal pro- ductions are corn, rye, wheat and tobacco. There are a number of large mills, which man- ufacture in great quantities and superior qual- ity; and the cotton and woolen goods are not surpassed by those made in any other sec- tion of the United States. In orchard pro- ductions Albemarle is the third county in the State. The Albemarle pippin grown here has a reputation which is world-wide. Grape cul- ture is extensively carried on, the principal and most profitable varieties being the Concord, Ives, Clinton and Norton's Virginia. The min- eral found in the county are gold, iron, lead, slate, limestone, sandstone and soapstone. The timbers are oak, chestnut, walnut, locust, pine, hickory, poplar, maple and beech. Shadwell, on the Rivanna river, is noted for having been the birthplace of Thomas Jefferson. The edu- cational facilities are very great, for besides the University of Virginia there are a large number of private schools and academies for both males and females, besides 145 public schools. One of the finest institutions of the State, and where an incalculable amount of good is being done in the elevation and en- nobling of labor, is the Miller Manual Labor School, founded by Samuel Miller, of Lynch- burg, Va. Here both boys and girls are taught.
