Richmond. the principal city and capital of the "Old Dominion" and Henrico County, at the head of navigation and at the base of the falls of the James River. is the oldest existing English settlement in the Union. In 1609, eleven years before the "Mayflower" dropped anchor in Plymouth Harbor, a party of 129 colonists, driven from Jamestown by famine, ascended the James River, under the command of Master West, and settled at the "Falls." In 1644-'45 the General Assembly of Virginia ordered the erection of a fort, to be called "Forte Charles," at the Falls of the James River.

and in 1679 Colonel Byrd was granted certain privileges on condition that he should settle "fifty well-armed and able-bodied men near the Falls as a protection to the frontier against the Indians."

But the growth of the place was slow, and it was not until the reign of George III. (in 1742) that Richmond was made a town by legislative enactment, and even then it was little more than a village.

TRANSPORTATION FACILITIES.

Richmond is the natural gateway between the North, the West and the great Northwest, on one hand, and the rapidly expanding South, on the other, and handles an immense volume of freight exchanged between those regions; all of the great railway systems of both regions having actual termini in Richmond, or reaching this city over the rails of their direct and immediate connections; while to its east, the Atlantic Sea- board, with unrestricted advantages, is close at hand.

Among the railroads converging at Richmond are the Chesapeake and Ohio, whose rails lead in three different directions; the Southern, whose rails lead in two different directions; the Atlantic Coast Line; the Seaboard Air Line; the Norfolk and Western, with three connections (The Atlantic Coast Line, the Seaboard Air Line and the South- ern Railway), the Richmond and Washington Line, and the Tidewater & Western Railroad Company, with two connections (The Atlantic Coast Line and the Southern Railway). These lines have an aggregate, owned or controlled, of 26,347 miles of road.

Situated at the head of navigation on James River. it has the advantages of water transportation. Sailing vessels and other craft engaged in foreign and domestic com :- merce afford means for direct shipment from its port, and two steamboat companies -- the Old Dominion and the Virginia Navigation Company, plying the river regularly - as well as the rail lines, connect at Newport News, Norfolk and other points, supplying transportation to all parts of the world.

It enjoys exceptional facilities for urban and suburban travel. by means of the electric railways, consolidated under the organization of the Virginia Railway & Power Company, embracing about 120 miles of track. The Richmond & Chesapeake Bay Railway Company (an electric line) now reaching Ashland, was projected with the view, and gives promise, of most important extensions. There is also an electric line running to Petersburg. Va., and the Richmond & Rappahannock River Railway Company ultimately intended to reach Usbarna. Va., now built and operated a portion of the way.
