Population, 1916-18,932.
Number voters-White, 2,593; colored, 1,271.
Area-Acres, 302,891; square miles, 460. County Seat-Amherst Court House.
This county was formed in 1761 from Albe- marle. It lies at the eastern base of the Blue Ridge, which divides it from Rockbridge, and is about 100 miles due west from Richmond- 138 miles by railroad. Bedford, Campbell and Appomattox are on the south, Nelson on the north and east. The farming land is of the finest quality, and its products of corn, to- bacco, wheat, &c., find a convenient market in the thriving city of Lynchburg, which is lo- cated on the opposite side of James river, from its southern boundary. At the county seat. Amherst, there is a warehouse and tobacco factories. Recent operations in this county have discovered some twenty-five parallel veins of iron ore, varying in width from five to sixty feet. Copper ore is found in great abundance, as is also slate and soapstone. The Southern Railway traverses the county from north to south, and the James river branch of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway skirts its whole southern border, as does also the James river. Its other water courses are the Ped- lar, Tye, Buffalo and Piney rivers, all of which empty into the James.

This county was formed in 1845 from parts of Buckingham, Charlotte, Campbell and Prince Edward. It lies on the south side of James river, and is bounded on the east by Buckingham and Prince Edward counties, south by Campbell and Charlotte. west by campbell, north by Nelson, and Amherst, from which it is separated by James river. The county is watered by the James, Appomattox, l'alling and Holaday rivers, Big and Little Cub, Reedy, Wreck Island, Bent, Davids, Stonewall and Horsepen creeks. There are a large num- ber of springs, including freestone and mineral waters in great variety. The surface is rolling And in some portions of the county hilly. The soil varies from red clay into a gray slate, of. a light texture, with a red sub-soil, and is well adapted to the cultivation of wheat, corn, oats, tobacco, timothy, clover and orchard grass. Shipping tobacco of a very fine quality is raised in large quantities and is relied on as The principal money crop, the average yield per acre being from 1,000 to 1,500 pounds.
Timber is abundant and of valuable kinds, consisting principally of white oak, black oak, Spanish oak and post oak, hickory, chestnut, popular, locust, pine, ash and sweet gum. Fruit and vegetable culture can be made very profitable in this county, as the soil is ad- mirably adapted to peaches, apples, cherries, s rapes, strawberries, etc. Stock thrives well, and it is not an uncommon thing to graze rattle and sheep all the year around. The minerals are gold, iron, copper, manganese and asbestos.
