Giles County

Value of real estate, 1916-White, $1,441,- 380; colored, $12.060. Total. $1,453,440.

Value of personal property-White, $810,- 716; colored, $8,770. Total, $819,486. Income-$4,600.

Population, 1916-11,623.

Number voters-White, 2,267; colored, 151. Area-Acres, 223,399; square miles, 351. County Seat-Pearisburg.

Giles was formed from Monroe and Taze- well in 1806, and named in honor of Hon. W. B. Giles, one of Virginia's illustrious sons. who represented his dictrict in the Congress of the United States from 1790 to 1802, and was afterwards (1827) elected her Governor. Giles lies on the western confines of the State, adjoining West Virginia, and has for its northern and southern borders ranges of the Alleghany mountains. Craig is on the east and Bland on the west. The surface is very mountainous, and especially adapted to graz- ing; the finest cattle shipped from the State being from this county. The land in some parts of the county is very fertile, producing fine crops of corn, rye, wheat and tobacco. The dairy and orchard products are consid- erable and add greatly to the revenue of the people. The ores found are iron, lead, cop- per and manganese. Marble of variegated kinds is also found. There are a number of excellent springs, the principal of which are the New River White and Mountain Lake. The New river and its several branches extend through and water the county and the New River Branch, Norfolk and Western, and Vir- ginia Railways follow the river's course through this county.

1

In climate, ' health and water, Giles county ranks with the most favored portions of the State.

To its other more notable features Giles county adds the highly important one of be- ing the great gateway of railway travel and traffic to the famous coal fields of Virginia and West Virginia and to northern and north- western cities.

Gloucester was formed from York in 1632, and is one of the peninsula counties whose shores are washed by the waters of the Ches- apeake. It was named after Gloucestershire, in England, from which place most of the earliest settlers of the county came. The York river is on its south and west, separating it from York and James City counties, and Piankitank on its north, separating it from Middlesex.

Mathews is on the upper or northern part of its eastern border, Mob Jack Bay at its middle and Chesapeake Bay at its southern border .. King and Queen county bound it on the west. The farm products, though small, are more than sufficient for home use, while those of the dairy and orchard yield good profits. Marl in great abundance is found in this county. The fisheries of Gloucester are valuable and extensvie, employing large capi- tal and many hands, The Mobjack Bay oyster is thought by many to equal in quality and flavor those of the world-renowned Lynnhaven Bay.
