Income, $2,459.

Population, 1916-9,199.

Area-Acres, 184,936; square miles, 511. County Seat-Clintwood.

Dickenson was formed in the year 1850 from the counties of Wise, Buchanan and Russell, and named in honor of William J. Dickenson, who was a member of the House of Delegates from Russell at that time. The county is bounded on the north by the State of Kentucky, on the east by Buchanan, on the south by Russell, and on the west by Wise county. The products are corn, rye, oats. wheat, grass and fruits. A large portion of the county is in timber, and some of the finest to be found in the State. There is abundance of coal and iron, besides a num- ber of mineral springs. This county is very mountainous. There is a railroad from Dante, Va., Russell county, to Elkhorn, Ky., running with McClure river. This railroad, the C .. C. & O., goes direct through the so-called Breaks of Cumberland mountain, known for its beau- tiful scenery. From the railroad through these mountains the scenery is equal to any part that can be found in Switzerland. None of the timber nor minerals have been removed from this county, excepting a small number of walnut and poplar trees. Pound, Crane's Nest and Russell's Fork rivers and McClure creek are the principal streams, all coursing through the Breaks of Cumberland mountains. The timber consists principally of poplar, oak. ash, cucumber, pine, hemlock, and walnut. For grass and grazing purposes, and fruit. it is one of the best counties in the State for investors, as prices are low and the resources as yet undeveloped.

This county, was formed from Prince George in 1752, and named in honor of Robert Din- widdie, who was Governor of Virginia from 1752 to 1758. It lies between the Appomat- tox and Nottoway rivers, and is bounded on the east by Prince George, on the south by Sussex, Greenville and Brunswick, and on the west by Nottoway, and on the north by Amelia and Chesterfield. The lands through- out the county are generally of good quality. and in the vicinity of Petersburg they have been much improved. The Atlantic Coast Line railroad extends south along the eastern line; the Norfolk and Western on its northern bor- der, and the Seaboard Air Line through the center of the county. Tobacco, peanuts and cotton are the principal products. Peters- burg, its principal city, will be made the sub- ject of a separate sketch following the county information.
