Hanover was formed from New Kent in 1720, and extends southeast and northwest be- tween the counties of Caroline and King Wil- liani on the north and Henrico and Gooch- land on the south. New Kent bounds it on the east and Louisa on the west. Its north- ern and western parts are watered by the North and South Anna rivers, which form the Pamunkey on the northern border, and south- ern by the Chickahominy. which empties into the James. The river lands are productive and valuable, yielding fine crops of tobacco. corn. oats and wheat. Truck farming in Han- over is exclusively and profitably carried on. It is the banner watermelon county of the State, and, next to Accomac, the largest sweet potato grower. The Richmond. Fredericks- burg and Potomac, the Chesapeake and Ohio railways and the Richmond & Rappahannock River Ry Co., and Chesapeake Bay Electric Line traverse the county, affording ample fa- cilities for transportation.
