Alexandria County, Virginia the smallest, but one of the richest counties in the state, was originally a part of Fairfax County, being that part ceded to the General Government in 1801, for the seat of Government. By the act of retrocession of 1847 it became again a part of Virginia and was named Alexandria County. It has an area of twenty-six square miles and a population at this time of about 15,000. The assessed value of the real estate other than Public Service Corporations is $7,- 742,930. The qualified voters number 2.000 of whom 1, 800 are white and 200 colored. '
Alexandria County, is no longer a rural or agriculture community, it is growing into one large city over looking the National Capital. The finest schools and school-buildings in the state are located here. Modern macadam roads, electric lights, telephone and telegraph lines, gas and water mains, and a network of perfectly equipped electric railways make this county the most desirable residential section surrounding Washington. Most of the land is subdivided into building lots and the whole county is covered with attractive modern homes costing from $2,000 to $50,000 each.
The Arlington National Cemetery. the most beautiful in the country and Fort Myer, Mili- tary Post, visited by thousands of tourists every year are located here. Overlooking the beau- tiful Potomac River and Washington City and adjoining the home of Admiral Presley M Rixey, we have the Washington Country Club, where our President, the members of the Cabinet, the Diplomatic Corps Congress and other prominent Washingtonians play Tennis and Golf every day.

The city of Alexandria, originally called Bellhaven, is delightfully located on the west bank of the Potomac river, six miles below and in view of the National Capital, with it has hourly rail and ferry connection. It was incorporated in 1779, at which time it was a part of Fairfax county. Its harbor is a very fine one, and capable of accommodating ves- sels of the heaviest tonnage. Five regular lines of steamers touch at its wharves. The schools of Alexandria are among the best in the State, the social and moral standing, health and accessibility of Alexandria makes it a very desirable place to which parents can send their children. The city contains within its limits several important manufacturing es- tablishments, among them extensive steam pump factory (largest in the United States). flouring mills, several machine shops, carriage factories, large
tannery, extensive coal
and lumber yards, two daily and weekly papers, &c. This city was the home town of Geo. Washington, who spent much of his time here, when in private life.
