Clarke was formed in 1836 from Frederick, and named in honor of General George Rogers Clarke, who distinguished himself in the In- dian and Revolutionary wars. It lies at the head of the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. and borders on the West Virginia line. The Blue Ridge Mountains form its eastern bound- ary, dividing it from Loudoun and Fauquier. Warren county is on the south and its mother county on the west. The wheat lands are among the finest in the State, and the average per acre exceeds any other. Indian corn, rye, and oats are also raised in very large quanti- ties. The raising of cattle is very extensively carried on. and the cities of Washington, Bal- timore, New York, etc., are convenient markets for their sale. The Shenandoah Valley branch of the Norfolk and Western road extends through the central part of the county from north to south, and brings it into communica- tion with all the different sections of the coun- try. The Shenandoah river winds its course along the base of the Blue Ridge, and with its several branches plentifully waters the coun- try. There are a number of large mills, which manufacture fine grades of flour that find ready sale in Northern markets. The ores found here are iron, copper and lead. Iron ore is considerably mined, promising to be- come lucrative.
Berryville (original name Battletown). the county seat of Clarke county, is a thriving. growing town. It is also a station on the Norfolk and Western Railwoy. Since the completion of the railroad there has been great activity in business, and it is one of the most important stations on the road.
