A memorial service was held Saturday, Sept. 12 at 1:00 p.m. at the Valley Mortuary Chapel for Thomas Neil Sorenson, Jr. of Lake Isabella. Officiating was Pastor Willard Van Fossen.


Mr. Sorenson was born Sep- tember 18, 1935 in Madera, Cali- fornia and died September 5, 1992 in Mt. Mesa, California. He was a member of the Eagles Aerie #3156 in Kernville.


He was survived by his wife Lawana of three years; sons, Steve Sorenson and D Don Sorenson, both of Garden Grove, California; daughter, Diana Plate of Anaheim, California; four granddaughters; brother, Jim Sorenson of Kernville, California; and sister, Elaine Spaan of Kernville, California.

Norman Wayne Rogers


Graveside services were held last month for Norman Wayne Rogers, 58, who died at Tucson Medical Center in Tucson, Ari- zona.


Mr. Rogers was born June 22, 1934 in Sanborn County, South Dakota to Cecil Dwayne Rogers and Helen Carpenter Rogers. Mr. Rogers worked with road crews in South Dakota and Arizona for many years. He also taught En- glish and history, including several years at Buena High School in Sierra Vista, Arizona.


Mr. Rogers is survived by his wife, Shanlyn, publisher of the Douglas Arizona Daily Dispatch and former publisher of the Kern Valley Sun; two daughters, Tamara Voas, of Half Moon Bay, California and Valorie Jeffrey, of Indonesia; two brothers, Jim Rogers, of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Larry Rogers, of Worthington, Minn .; four grandchildren: Jacob, Tyler and Samuel Voas, of Half Moon Bay, California and Kimberly Jeffrey, of Indonesia; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his mother, Helen, of Mitchell, S.D. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Kimberly.

Alan Ross Tuttle


A graveside service was held Thursday, September 10, 1992 at 1:00 p.m. at the Kern River Valley Cemetery in Wofford Heights for Alan Ross Tuttle of Wofford Heights. Officiating was Pastor John Carpenter of the Kernville United Methodist Church.


Mr. Tuttle was born December 19, 1922 in old Kernville and died at his residence in Wofford Heights September 7, 1992. He was 69 years old. He resided in the Kern Valley his entire life and was em- ployed by Southern California Edison and retired after 41 years of service. He was an U.S. Army veteran of WWII and a member of the Sidewalk CBers.


He is survived by his wife of 46 years Ann J. Tuttle of Wofford Heights; son & daughter-in-law Alan R. Jr. (Beau) and Brenda Tuttle of Bishop; daughter, Susie Tuttle Sparks of Brookings, Or- egon; granddaughters, Shannor R. (Sam) Tuttle, Rhonda S. (Roni) Tuttle and Liberty E. Sparks; soon- to-be great grand baby and nu- merous other family and friends.

Cheryle was born Sep- tember 29, 1960 in Gardena, California and died in Bakersfield, California, September 10, 1992. She was 31 years old. She was affiliated with Slugger's and Arlie's.


Mrs. Hobill is survived by her husband Ron Hobill of Torrance, California; son Michael Hobill of Bodfish; daughter Ashley Hobill of Bodfish; daughter Desiree Hobill of Bodfish; mother Mary Helen Ellis and stepfather Richard Ellis of Bodfish; brother Kenneth Moore of Lakewood, California; brother Richie Ellis of Bodfish and sister Connie Lopez of Torrance, Cali- fornia.

OBITUARY


Emmett R. Berry, Sr.


Private family graveside services were held Saturday, September 19 in the Oak Grove Cemetery at Glennville, for Emmett R. Berry, Sr., who died September 17, in Porterville from complications of a fall and broken hip. Emmett was born August 23, 1894 to Belle and J.H. Berry, Linns Valley Pio- neers. Belle was born in Placerville (Hangtown) in 1854 and J.H. was a teacher in Kern County and was the Kern County Superintendent of Schools in the late 1800's.


Emmett met Ruth Burton and marned her November 19, 1917 in Bakersfield and would have celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary in November of this year. Ruth was from a Kern County pioneer family also. Both Emmett R. and Ruth have lived in Kern and Tulare coun- ties most of their lives. Emmett was an educator for over 36 years and was last affiliated with the State Department of Education for the state of Cali- fornia. He was a teacher/prin- cipal at Kernville in 1917, Beardsley School in 1919 to 1923, Superintendent of El Modena Elementary Schools in Orange County from 1923 to


1925, Superintendent of La Habra Elementary Schools in Orange County from 1925 to 1936, Superintendent of Porterville Elementary School in Tulare County from 1936 to 1949, Chief Bureau of Redis- tricting for State of California Department of Education from 1949 to 1953 and retired in 1953. He then became Post- master of Posey Post Office at Posey, Jack Ranch in Tulare County from 1954 to 1960. He was a proud World War One veteran having served in France from 1917 to 1918.


Emmett was the author of a book on the history of his family home area in the Sierra foothills in 1975, called "A History of Jack Ranch." He also wrote a booklet, "My First Job," an ac- count of him helping install one of the flume pipelines to the Edison Dynamos on the Tule River above Springville when he was 18. He was a member of the American Legion and Rotary in Porterville and the Kiwanis Club in La Habra.


He is survived by his loving wife Ruth Burton Berry: his son Raymond Berry of Cambia; his daughters Betty Cameron of Springville and Joan Reynolds of Jack Ranch; also 9 grand- children and 15 great-grand- children.


There will be no visitations and the family requests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to Nature Conservancy, Bakersfield Chapter.

Earl Malcolm Dunlap


A graveside service was held Thursday, September 17, 1992 at the Kern River Valley Cem- etery in Wofford Heights for Earl Malcolm Dunlap of Bod- fish. Officiating was Pastor John Carpenter of the United Meth- odist Church of Kernville.


Mr. Dunlap was born May 20, 1921 in Indiana and died September 12, 1992 in Bodfish. He was 71 years old.


He is survived by his wife of 50 years Mildred Dunlap of Bodfish; son Dennis Dunlap of Tujunga, CA; daughter Jan Dunlap of Tujunga, CA; daugh- ter Linda Skutnik of Virginia; daughter Gail Shaffer of Bakersfield, CA; brother Ken- neth Dunlap of Chicago, IL; brother Ernest Dunlap of Pennsylvania; brother Robert Dunlap of Chicago, IL; sister Norma Muctchmore of Illinois; and 5 grandchildren.

Margaret Ann Matlock


A funeral service was held Saturday, September 19, 1992 at 10:00 a.m. at the Valley Mor- tuary Chapel in Lake Isabella for Margaret Ann Matlock of Lake Isabella. Officiating was Pastor David Snow of the First Baptist Church of Lake Isabella. Interment followed at the Kern River Valley Cemetery in Wofford Heights, CA:


Margaret was born Decem- ber 27, 1911 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and died Septem- ber 16, 1992 in Mt. Mesa, CA. She was 79 years old.


She is survived by her son Greg Standerfer of Solana Beach, CA; brother Ray Bielke of Wisconsin; grandchildren Greg and Angelo Standerfer of Solana Beach, CA.


Mrs. Matlock was a 41 year resident of Kern County, a Lady of the Moose and a member of the VFW Auxiliary.

James Wesley Foster


James (Jim) Wesley Foster was born July 19, 1910 in Port Arthur, Texas. When he was six his father moved his family of wife, Sally and three sons to Durand, Oklahoma, where Jim received his education. He was always interested in cooking and observed his mother at every opportunity. He was employed by a local restaurant where he met a U.S. Navy Commander who urged him to join the Navy where he in a short time became a CCS and was honorably discharged in 1963.


He passed away Sept. 14 at his home. He is survived by his wife Beth; step-son Jack and Sue, his wife; step-daughter Christie and a cousin Johnnie Mae Davis of Seattle, Wash- ington. Memorial services were held at the Elks Lodge with the V.F.W. assisting, Sunday at 2:00 p.m.

Clarence "Bud" Burgess


Clarence "Bud" Burgess died September 13, 1992 at the age on 77 years. He was a resident of Kernville for 20 years.


Mr. Burgess is survived by his wife of 25 years, Enid; daughters Mary, Barbara, Ginny; son Norman; grandchil- dren Rachael, Kevin and Jared.

Ollie Esther Tarter


A funeral service was held Wednesday, September 23, 1992 at 10:00 a.m. at the Mt. View Southern Baptist Church in Lake Isabella for Ollie Esther Tarter of Lake Isabella. Offici- ating was Pastor Deryl Lackey. Interment followed at the Kern River Valley Cemetery in Wofford Heights.


Ollie E. Tarter was born September 26, 1896 in Watervalley, Kentucky and died September 19, 1992 at Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield, after a short illness. She was 95 years old.


Mrs. Tarter was seven days short of her 96 birthday and had lived in Lake Isabella and Ridgecrest for the past 22 years. Ollie was a charter member of the National Garden Club in Oklahoma City, OK and a member of the Ridgecrest Desert Planters. She was an active member and a founder of the Mt. View Southern Bap- tist Church in Lake Isabella. They held meetings in her home in Lake Isabella with the founding name of the First Bodfish Baptist Chapel, later named Mt. View Southern Baptist Church. Ollie was an active Rebecah in her earlier days and was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church of Ridgecrest, CA.


She is survived by her son Albert R. Dodson and daughter- in-law Trilbia A. Dodson of Lake Isabella; granddaughter Judith A. Wirsing and husband; great- grandsons Daniel D. and Ri- chard R. Wirsing of Nipomo, CA; great-granddaughter Shawn,E. Vasquez and great- great-grandsons Eric, James and Peter Vasquez of Nipomo, CA.

Robert Keller Alden was a resident of Wofford Heights and a carpenter by trade. He had lived in the Kern River Valley for eight years. He was born February 10, 1950 in Seaside, Oregon. He passed away Sep- tember 1, 1992 in Phoenix, Ari- zona. He was 42 years old.


A mass was held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 5, at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Phoenix; preceded by a memorial service held at Saint Francis Mausoleum in Phoenix, where he was laid to rest.


He is survived by his daugh- ter Tracy Faith Alden of Phoe- nix; parents Richard and Kathleen Alden of Phoenix; sister Patricia Alden of Port- land, Oregon; and many friends, all of whom will miss him very much.

Edward Kelly, age 65, died September 23, 1992 in Lake Isabella, CA. He was born in San Bernadino, CA on July 11, 1927. He was a truck driver for 28 years. He was retired and a resident of Lake Isabella.


He is survived by his wife Lucille Kelly of Lake Isabella; son Bruce Kelly of Rancho Cucamonga; son William Ed- ward Kelly of Perris; grand- daughter Christine Kelly of Rancho Cucamonga; grandson David Kelly of Perris.

A memorial service was held on Friday, September 25 at 11 a.m. at the Elks Lodge for James (Jim) Earle Leu of Wofford Heights.


Jim was born May 4, 1937 in Marshfield, Wisconsin and died September 21, 1992. He was 55 years old.


He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Kitty; daughters Debbie Leu and Tammy Leu of Bodfish; son and daughter-in- law Steve and Sue Leu and grandson Christopher of Bod- fish; brothers Bob Leu of Appleton, Wisconsin; Jon Leu. of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; sis- ters Lorna Davel of Neenah- Menasha, Wisconsin; Luella Tucker of Chicago, Illinois, and many nieces and nephews.


Jim was a thirteen year resi- dent of the Kern River Valley and owner of Kern Valley Home Supply and was a member of the Elks Lodge.

Anna D'Amato Valentino


A mass for Christian burial was held Friday, October 9, 1992 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Jude's Parish Catholic Church in Wofford Heights for Anna D'Amato Valentino, former resident of the Kern River Val- ley. Officiating was Rev. Mon- signor A.G. Herdegen of St. Jude's Parish Catholic Church.


Anna was born August 5, 1915 in Palermo, Sicily and died at her brothers residence in Warren, Ohio. She was 77 years old.


She is survived by her brother Anthony D. D'Amato of Warren, Ohio; brother Francisco D'Amato of Bakersfield, Cali- fornia; and 3 grandchildren.

Family services will be held at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, California for William W. Vaeth. He died of a heart attack on October 8, 1992 at Bakersfield Memorial.

Opal O. "Mickie" Nelson


A graveside service was held Monday, October 12, 1992 at 2:30 p.m. at Kern River Valley Cemetery in Wofford Heights for Opal O. "Mickie" Nelson of Weldon. Officiating was Pastor David Snow of the First Baptist Church of Lake Isabella.


Mickie was born February 24, 1922 in Lawrence, South Carolina, and died October 8, 1992 at her residence in Weldon after a long illness. She was 70 years old. Mickie was a 20 year resident of the Kern River Val- ley. She was a retired beauti- cian, worked with the U.S. Forestry Service and sold fish- ing tackle in the valley for a time. She was active in Eastern Star, Moose and Dam Dancers.


She is survived by her hus- band Vernon of Weldon; daughter Shirley Ann Penland of Santa Barbara; sons James Donald White and Ernest Wil- liam White of Belveder, S.C .; also 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mable Lucille Horton


Services were held for Mable Lucille Horton in Highland Chapelon October 15, 1992 by Pastor Floyd R. Castillo. Mable was born in Lamar, Colorado on February 11, 1905. She went to college to become a school teacher and looked forward to a teaching career. She was married to Richard Horton on June 6, 1926.


She taught school in south- east Colorado until they moved to California around 1930. While Richard traveled with the Southern Pacific railroad, Mable remained at home, content to be a mother and wife. When Richard retired in 1964, they had a home built in Mountain Mesa where they have lived together until she was hospi- talized in March of this year when Richard broke his hip and was physically unable to care for her. She died on October 11, 1992 in Bakersfield. Mable and Richard had joined the Highland Chapel United Meth- odist Church in 1970.


Mable was married to Rich- ard Horton for 66 years. She is survived by him and their son, Doyle and his wife, Peggy; four grandchildren Sharon, Diane, Elizabeth and Richard; and great-grandchildren Mary and Lindsay. She will be fondly re- membered by her many friends.

Troy T. Thompson


Troy T. Thompson was born August 12, 1903 and died at his residence in Wofford Heights on October 8, 1992 at the age of 89. He had been a resident of the valley for 20 years.


His final resting place is at Rose Hills Cemetery in Los Angeles, California.


Troy is survived by his wife of 28 years, Nancy M. Thomp- son of Wofford Heights; daugh- ter Diana Corrinton of Alta Loma, California; daughter Elizabeth Patterson of Rialto, California; daughter Troy Linda Frost of Bullhead City, Arizona; daughter Angeline Freeman of Amarillo, Texas; step-daugh- ter Lorraine Williams of Colum- bus, Ohio; step-daughter Irene Bennett of Lake Elsinore, Cali- fornia; step-daughter Josephine Bennett of Inez, Kentucky and step-daughter Gertrude McCoy of Williamson, West Virginia; along with many grandchildren and great- grandchildren.


He was loved by his family and will be deeply missed. He was a great and giving man.

Private services were held for Ardice "Peggy" Cossette Mather of Kernville. Peggy was born in lowa and died October 5, 1992 at her residence in Kernville.


She is survived by her hus- band of 14 years, Joseph Mather of Kernville; daughter Doris Johnson of Colorado; and 3 grandchildren.


Peggy was an Elks Lady.

Walter A. Keithley


Memorial services were held October 19 at the Eagles Lodge Aerie #3156 at Mt. Mesa for Walter A. Keithley who passed away in his home after a lengthy illness. The Eagles Lodge and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #7665 of Lake Isabella offici- ated.


Mr. Keithley was born Janu- ary 25, 1910. He passed away October 9, 1992. He was a native of South Pasadena and had lived in this community most of his life.


Walter was a plumber for over 40 years and was affili- ated with San Marino Plumbing Company. He retired in 1978 and moved to Lake Isabella, where he then became associ- ated with the Baptist Church of Lake Isabella, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Eagles Lodge and the Moose Lodge.


Survivors include his children Gloria Jeanne Lillis, her hus- band Robert (Coach of the San Francisco Giants); Richard Keithley of Riverside; stepson Robert Gazzetta of New York; brother Harvey Keithley of San Marino; sisters Wilma Ferguson of Wofford Heights, Gertrude Spainhower of Lake Isabella and Charlene Thomas of Altadena; also four grandchil- dren and one great-grandchild.

Ethel Mae Halverson


Ethel Mae Halverson was born in St. Charles, Minnesota on August 12, 1911. She passed away October 2, 1992 at the age of 81.


She married Norman Halverson March 7, 1931 and had two daughters. Wannie Orlene preceded her in death. She is survived by Merilyn Hilsabeck of Lake Isabella; four grandchildren Kay Ferry of Fontana, California and Butch, Perry and Mike Hilsabeck of Cane Junction, Oregon; and 10 great-grandchildren.


Mrs. Halverson retired as a retail clerk of Boys Market. She was a member of Grace Bible Church.

Janet E. Janssen


Graveside memorial ser- vices were held on Saturday, October 24 at 11:00 a.m. in the Kern River Valley District Cemetery for Mrs. Janet Janssen, age 56, of Wofford Heights. Officiating was Rev- erend John Revis, Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Kernville.


Mrs. Janssen passed away Wednesday morning in a Bakersfield hospital. She was born October 3, 1936 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She and Joseph Janssen were married in Toronto December 31, 1955.


Mrs. Janssen was a very giving caring person who was devoted to her family. She loved her garden and flowers.


She is survived by her hus- band Joseph at the family home in Wofford Heights; daughters Lori Brannon of Raleigh, North Carolina and Heather Janssen of Galena, Illinois; brother John McArthur of Bancroft, Ontario, Canada and sister Vickie Fraser of Haliburton, Ontario, Canada. She is also survived by three grandchildren Cameron Brannon, Hayden Brannon and Hailey Coursen.


The family suggests re- membrances in her name to the American Cancer Society. The Bonewell family, Taft Fu- neral Home is in charge of ar- rangements.


George Erich Hiersekorn


Cremation arrangements were made for George Erich Hiersekorn of Wofford Heights. Mr. Hiersekorn was born March 3, 1910 in Germany and died October 19, 1992 in Mt. Mesa. He was 82 years old.


Mr. Hiersekorn immigrated from Germany in 1951 to Canada and after three and a half years immigrated from Canada to the U.S. and moved from Orange county 19 years ago to the Kern River Valley.


He is survived by his wife of 44 years Edith Hiersekorn of Wofford Heights.

Beverly Averett Paine


It is with great sorrow that we announce the loss of Beverly Averett Paine of Wofford Heights. She was born in Idaho 63 years ago and entered "heavens gates" October 14, 1992 after a battle with cancer.


She is survived by her loving husband Ralph, her son and daughter, grandson and granddaughter and great- granddaughter and her loving friends of 30 years, Kenneth Shoulders family and their ex- tended family.

Leroy Maurice Jackson


LeRoy Maurice Jackson, a former Kern County supervisor, died Saturday, Oct .. 31 in Bakers- field.


Jackson was born July 31, 1921 in Omaha, Nebraska and had been a resident of Kern County for more than 33 years.


He was last employed by the state as Assistant Director of Transportation.


Jackson attended Omaha Uni- versity and UCLA and was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy.


Jackson was a mathematics and physics instructor at Pasadena City College from 1948 - 52 and served as personnel management and training director from 1952 - 59.


During 1959 - 1965, he served as the director of community rela- tions for China Lake Naval Weap- ons Center.


In 1965, he was elected repre- sentative of the first district on the Kern County Board of Supervi- sors and served until 1977.


Jackson represented the people of North Bakersfield, Shafter, McFarland, Inyokern, Ridgecrest, and China Lake, in- cluding the outlying areas. Jack- son served three years as chairman of the board and also served on the Parks, Agriculture, Adminis- trative practices, Judicial, Men- tal Health, Hospital, and Air Pol- lution committees.


Jackson was active in real es- tate sales, development, and in- vestments from 1977 until his death.


He received honors and awards from Phi Delta Kappa, the Junior


Chamber of Commerce award for good government, was a life member of the PTA and earned the Kern County service award. His memberships included the board of directors, Bakersfield Community Hospital, VFW, DAV and American Legion Post 26; BPO Elks #266; Stockdale Coun- try Club; past director and ex- ecutive secretary of Rosemead Chamber of Commerce; charter president of Rosemead Lions In- ternational.


Jackson was past member of the Ridgecrest Hospital advisory board, the Indian Wells Vallcy family counseling service board, and was charter president of the Indian Wells Valley United Fund.


Jackson was also past commit- tce chairman for Southern Sierra Council, Boy Scouts of America, past member of the Southern San Joaquin Committee for Higher Education, the Henrietta Weill Memorial child guidance clinic board, past president of Ridgecrest Kiwanis club, and charter presi- dent of Stockdale West Kiwanis club. He was also past president of Burroughs High School PTA, past member of the Kern Clunty Planning Commission and past member and chairman of the Kern County Board of Education.


Jackson is survived by his wife, Jean, of Bakersfield, son and daughter-in-law, Leroy and Connie Jackson of Torrance, CA, daughter and son-in-law, Theresa


and Gary Butler of Nevada; step- sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Sherri Wilson, John and Marilyn Wilson and Craig and Winette Wilson, all of Bakersfield; 14 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren; and his sis- ter and brother-in-law, Delores and Ray Valenzuela of Manhat- tan Beach.


Services will be held at the Lutheran Church of Prayer, 8001 Panorama and Morning Drive, Bakersfield, on Wed., Nov. 4 at 1:30 p.m. Rev. Gene Bush will officiate and supervisor Roy Ashburn will present the eulogy. Casketbearers will be his grand- sons, Ramon Jackson, Rob Roy Jackson, Richard Jackson, Ryan Jackson, and Chris Wilson. Inter- ment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 3700 River Blvd., with military honors presented by the Associated Veterans of Kern county.

Floy Ethel Christy


Floy Ethel Christy, age 81, former resident of Lake Isabella, California & Independence, California. Born March 14, 1911 in Avery, Missouri, died Octo- ber 30, 1992 in Anaheim, Cali- fornia. She was a homemaker all of her adult life.


She is survived by daughter Ethel Hansen of Norwalk, California; daughter Idella Jackman of Seattle, Washing- ton; son William Christy of Pasco, Washington; son Ken- neth Christy of Bodfish, Cali- fornia; sister Orah Day of Mis- souri; and 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.


Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 3, 1992 at the Owens Valley Mortuary in Lone Pine, California. Officiant Pastor Ben Sparks of the Mt. Whitney Baptist Church. Inter- ment followed at the Indepen- dence Cemetery in Indepen- dence, California.
