Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, M.L .. sis- ter Mildred Stubblefield and grandson Doug Crowder. Eliza- beth is survived by three sons and their wives. George Hart


A memorial service was conducted Saturday, June 8 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel for George Hart of Mt. Mesa. Prayers and culogy were delivered by family and friends. Mr. Hart passed away June 4 at home fol- lowing illness.


He is preceded in death by son George T. Hart deceased in August. 1988. Mr. Hart is sur- vived by daughter Leslie May Picton of Simi Valley; sister Margaret Dixon of Torrance: brother Leroy Hart of Wagy Flats; mother Frances Pearl Lobush of Torrance and two grandsons, George M. Hart was a WW II veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a member of KKRV Moose No. 948. Born Dec. 30, 1925 in Los Angeles, George Marvin Hart was 65 years of age.

Joe Stith


A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, June 22 at noon at the United Methodist Church in Weldon for Joseph "Joc" Stith of Weldon. Mr. Stith passed away at home June 11 following illness. He is survived by his wife Frances "Francy" of Weldon: parents James and Nettie Stith of Lake Isabella; daughter Joleen of Weldon and a student at Kern Valley High; sons Steven of Hemet, Joseph and daughter in law Vicki of West Jordan, Utah: granddaughter Britny of Utah and grandson Cameron of Utah.


Joe Stith operated a trucking company in the Los Angeles area before moving to the Kern Valley. He had been a valley resident for the past five years.


Born Jan. 31. 1938 in Kewanee, Henry County, Illinois, Joseph Edward Stith was 53 years of age.

William Kelley


A memorial service was conducted Tuesday June 18 at the Masonic Temple Kernville for William Kelley of Lake Isabella. Officiating were officers of KRV Masonic Lodge. No 827.


Mr. Kelley passed away June 8 at Memorial Hospital in Bakersfield.


He is survived by his wife of 51 years Annie of Lake Isabella. William Kelley was a U.S. Navy veteran of WW Il. He was a Master Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite. Born June 14, 1908 in Bowie, Texas, William Maxwell 'Kelley was 82.

James T. Brisbois


A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at the St. Jude Parish Catholic church, Wofford Heights on Friday, June 14 for James Brisbois of Kernville. Celebrant of the mass was Rev. Monsignor A.G. Herdegen, Pas- tor of the St. Jude Parish. Mr. Brisbois passed away June 10 at home.


He is survived by his wife of 34 years Dalma of Kernville, parents Herb and Anne Brisbois of Michigan; sons Herb of San Fernando Valley and Doug also of San Fernando Valley; daugh- ters Diane and Debra; brothers Bob and Richard, both of Michi- gan: sisters Maryann Sennett of Florida, Jane Vaill, Kate LaBute and Helen Lorence all of Michi- gan.


Jim Brisbois was a U.s. Air Force veteran who served during the Korean Conflict. He was re- tired from the Los Angeles Police Department where he worked in the vehicle repair section. He had been a resident of the Kern Val- ley for the past 10 years.


Born May 15, 1928 in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, James Thomas Brisbois was 63.

A funeral service was con- ducted Saturday, June 15 at the First Baptist Church of Lake Isabella for Justina Pankratz of Mt. Mesa. Officiating was Rev. David Snow, pastor.


Mrs. Pankratz passed away June 10 at Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield.


She is survived by her hus- band John of Mt. Mesa; daughter Norma Mendenhall of Arizona: sons Leslie of Washington, Jim of Sacramento, Ollie of Van Nuys. Justina was preceded in death by daughter Lillian; two brothers Jake of Michigan and Abe Schierling of Florida, who are Mennonite Missionaries: two sisters Agnes and Mary both of Oklahoma; grandchildren and great grandchildren.


Born Sept. 18. 1905 in Medford, Grant County. Okla- homa, Justina Pankratz was 85 years of age.

Elaine L. Schnorr


A funeral service was con- ducted Friday June 21 at the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church Lake Isabella for Elaine Schnorr of Weldon, officiating was Rev. Louis Fabrizius. Paster.


Mrs. Schnorr passed away June 16 at the emergency room of the Kern Valley Hospital after being suddenly stricken by a heart attack at the home of a friend. She is survived by her Daughter Darlene Turner of Norco, Sons Robert of Norco, Gerald of Washington State. seven grand- children and one great-grandchild. Elaine is preceded in death by her husband Clifford deceased Sept. 25. 1975.


Born Jan. 26, 1921 in Brown County, So. Dakota, Elaine Louise Schnorr was 70 years of age. In- terment at the Kern River Valley Cemetery. Arrangement: Valley Mortuary of Lake Isabella.


Dorothy B. Wood


A funeral service was con- ducted Saturday June 22 at the United Methodist Church Kernville for Dorothy Wood of Wofford Heights. Officiating was Rev. Fred Baker. Pastor.


Mrs. Wood passed away June 19 at the Memorial Hospital in Bakersfield. She is survived by her Daughter, Loretta Drott of Orange, Crystal Jordan of Santa Barbara, Son George R. Wood III of Plano, Texas. nine grandchil- dren and six great-grandchildren.


Dorothy was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Grandmothers Club, El Segundo Rod & Gun Club and Ladies of the Elks. Donations to The Dor- othy Wood . Walter Loucks, a long time resident of Lake Isabella died on May 22 in La Habra. He was born Oct. 15, 1913.


He is survived by his wife and daughter, three grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

A funcral service was con- ducted graveside at the Kern River Valley Cemetery Wofford Heights for Paul P. Vehlewald of Wofford Heights. Officiating was Rev. Floyd Castillo. Pastor of the Highland Chapel United Meth- odist Church. Lake Isabella.


Mr. Vehlewald passed away June 17 at the Kern Valley Hos- pital Mt. Mesa. He is survived by his wife of 53 years Viola of Wofford Heights. son Donald and daughter in law Pat of Kernville. Brother Ollie of Southlake and two grandchildren.


Paul Vchlewald was a men- ber of the Elks. Moose, Eagles and Senior Citizens. Born July 12. 1910 in Pershing, Missouri. Paul Frederick Velilewald was 80 years of age.


Interment at the Kern River Cemetery. Memorial luncheon provided for family and friends at the KRV Elks Lodge by the La- dies of the Elks following the graveside service. Arrangements: Valley Mortuary. Lake Isabella.

Clyde Patrick McGuire


A funeral service was held Monday, June 24 at the Assembly of God church in North Fork. California for Clyde McGuire of North Fork. Officiating was pas- tor David Wilson.


McGuire passed away June 18 at St. Agnes Hospital in Fresno. He is survived by his mother. Lloree Knowles, longtime resi- dent of Kernville, now of North Fork; sister Robin Ryan of North Fork; brother Jim McGuire of Kernville and two sons, Todd and Danny McGuire of Medford, Or- egon.


He was a resident of Kernville for many years and was known for his musical talents and as founder of the Venice-based country blues band, the Canalagators.


Born July 3, 1938 in Los Angeles, Clyde McGuire was 52 years old. Interment at North Fork Cemetery.

Lawrence G. Kent


A funeral service was con- ducted graveside in the Old Kern River Valley Cemetary in Wofford Heights for Lawrence G. Kent, 83, of Walker Basin on June 25.


Officiating was Rev. Tom Allred, pastor of the Twin Oaks Community Churchin Twin Oaks in Sand Canyon, near Walker Basin.


Mr. Kent passed away on June 20 at the Hardee Memorial Hos- pital in Wauchula, Hardee County, Florida.


He is preceded in death by his wife Juanita and daughter Lanita. He is survived by his sister Geraldine Thrailkill of Wauchula, Florida, niece and nephews, Bobby Jean and Matt Sugg of Morganfield, Kentucky.


Mr. Kent was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was born Sept. 1, 1907 in Atlanta, Georgia.

John J. Roller


A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Tuesday July 2 at the St. Jude parish Catholic Church for John J. Roller of Lake Isabella. Celebrant of the Mass was Rev. Monsignor A.G. Herdegen, Pastor of St. Jude Parish.


Mr. Roller passed away June 19 in Ventura County following illness.


He is preceded in death by his wile Edna, deceased Aug. 16, 1990 and survived by four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.


Born May 7, 1906 in New York, John Joseph Roller was 85 years of age. Interment at the Kern River Valley Cemetery. Arrangements by Valley Mortu- ary of Lake Isabella.


Frederick C. Weaver


A funeral service was held Tuesday, July 2 at the Forest Lawn in Glendale for Frederick Charles Weaver. Officiating was Rev. Eric Frey and Rev. Robert Jordan, from the Crystal Cathedral, Gar- den Grove.


He is survived by his father and mother Charles and Louise Weaver and brother Pete Weaver; sister in law Shelly and nephew Timothy Weaver.


Frederick was born Feb. 3. 1952 in Los Angeles and was a resident of Mt. Mesa. He gradu- ated from Kern Valley High in 1970.


Frederick passed away June 30 in Silver Lake. He will be missed by his loving family and friends.

Richard Coleman


Richard E. Coleman, 70, a 12-year resident of Mt. Mesa, died Wednesday, July 3 at Riverside Community Hospital of heart failure. Coleman, a native of Plainfield, NJ, moved to Riverside in 1988 to be closer to family.


He is preceded in death by his brother William "Bill" Coleman, deceased in 1989. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne of Manville, NJ; sister Mary Van Doren of Middlesex, JN; brother David of Forest Park, Georgia; three chil- dren Richard and Harold Coleman of Trenton, NJ and Jacqueline Collette of San Bernardino; seven grandchildren and one great grandson and several nieces and nephews.


Coleman was a member of BPO Elks No. 2358, Kern River Valley and the American Legion Post 243, South Plainfield, NJ.


Born Oct. 20, 1920 in Plainfield, New Jersey, Richard Ellsworth Coleman was 70.


On July 8, a memorial service was conducted by the Past Exalted Rulers Association of POE No. 2358 of which he was a member.

Steven A. Nevares


A funeral service was con- ducted Tuesday, July 16, at the Valley Mortuary Chapel in Lake Isabella for Steven Nevares of Weldon. Officiating was Rev. Jack Dilley, pastor of the Kern Valley Bible Church of Lake Isabella. Steven passed away July 11, the victim of a motor vehicle accident on Highway 178, near Yankee Canyon. He is survived by his parents Dennis and Shelby Nevares of Weldon and grand- parents.


Steven was a senior at Kern Valley High School. He was a member of the Broncs football team playing both offense and defense as a running back and outside linebacker. Most recently, Steven served with the Roy Ashburn Campaign Committee during the "Welcome Home to Desert Storm Veterans" event in Kernville.


Born July 1, 1974 in Hawai- ian Gardens, California, Steven Nevares was 17 years of age. Interment at the Kern Valley Cemetery. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary.

Laurette El Vera La Crosse passed away at the Kern Valley Hospital on Saturday, July 13. She was born in Chicago, Illinois on July 28. 1930.

George Virmond


Edward


Funcral services were held Wednesday at il a.m. in the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran church for George Edward Virmond, 77 of Lake Isabella who passed away July 20 in a Bakersfield hospital after a long ill ness of heart disease. Rev. Louis Fabrezius of the Lutheran Church officiated.


George was a native of Chi- cago, Illinois and had lived here for the past 20 years. He had been a group leader for over 40 years and was retired from Westinghouse in the Major Pro- duction Electrical Repair and worked on many turbines as large as a boxcar. He was a member of the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church was an avid golfer and bowler, having entered many tournaments in the Kern Valley. He was a good neighbor by helping the widows of the neighborhood doing repairs on their homes and other needs.


He is survived by his beloved wife Irmgard Virmond of Lake Isabella; son George Virmond of Bakersfield; daughter Sandra Backstrom of Creswood, Illinois; sisters Ella Tomlinson of Lake Isabella and Harriet Hansen of Oaklawn, Illinois. His brother Wilbert Virmond and his wife Helen of Oaklawn, Illinois; grandsons Christopher Virmond of Bridgeview, Illinois, and David Backstrom of Crestwood, IL, granddaughters Dawn Hannafin of Crestwood, IL and Tammy Virmond of Justice, IL; great grandson Edward Hannafin, III and a host of nieces and nephews. Arrangements by Mish fu- neral home of Bakersfield.


Lucille Lillian Moore


Lucille Lillian Moore died July 21. She moved to Lake Isabella in 1962 and lived in the valley until moving to Shafter in 1990.


She is survived by her children Violet Ratzlaff of Shafter, Norma Reeves of Yuba City, Jo Ann Northan of Bakersfield and Alvin Moore of Bakersfield; 9 grand- children and six great grandchil- dren.


Lucille Lillian Moore was born Oct. 19, 1911 in Muskogee, Oklahoma. During her years in the valley, she worked as a hair- dresser at Darlene's House of Beauty in Lake Isabella. She was well known and will be missed by many.

Mary Copple


A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Thursday, Aug. 1 at the St. Jude Parish Catholic church for Mary Copple of Lake Isabella. Co-celebrants of the Mass were Rev. Monsignor An- thony Herdegen, pastor of St. Jude Parish and Rev. Father Frank Hernandez, Society of Jesus (Je- suits) of Sacramento.


Mrs. Copple passed away July 28 at the Kern Valley Hospital. She is survived by daughters Anna Hughes of Lake Isabella, Frances Cunningham of Glendale, Betty Smidt of Minnesota, son Rev. Father Frank Hernandez, S.J. with the Physical and Computer Sci- ences department of Jesuit High School in Carmichael; six grandchildren and four great- grandchildren.


Born in California, Feb. 15, 1911, Mary Copple was 80. In- terment at the Kern Valley Cemetery. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary of Lake Isabella.


Anthony Zordan


A memorial service was held Monday, Aug. 5 at the Valley Mortuary Lake Isabella for An- thony Joseph Tony Zordan of Wofford Heights. Officiating was Rev. John Carpenter, pastor of the Church of the Nazarene, Lake Isabella. Mr. Zordan passed away July 26 at home.


He is survived by his daugh- ter Anna Zordan of Long Beach and one brother Leon Zordan of Mississippi. Anthony Zordan was a WW II veteran of the U.S. Navy. Born Aug. 15, 1913 in Spring- field, Massachusetts, Anthony J. Zordan was 77.

A memorial service was conducted Friday, Aug. 2 at the First Baptist Church in Kernville for William Andrew "Bill-Bill" Curtis of Wofford Heights. Offi- ciating was Rev. John Revis, Pastor.


Mr. Curtis passed away Aug. 1 at Kern Valley Hospital.


He is survived by his wife Ruth of Wofford Heights; daughter and son in law Mr. and Mrs. Jess Wright of Bodfish; sisters Virginia Ellis of Ventura, Mary Kirkland of Colonial Heights, Virginia; brothers Charles of Virginia and Albert of Texas; seven grandsons David Jacobsen of Las Vegas and Donald Fisher of San Diego; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.


William Curtis was retired after serving 14 years as custodian at Kernville Elementary School where he was known to students and staff as "Bill-Bill". He had been a resident of the Kern Val- ley for 27 years. Born Jan. 24, 1917 in Wakefield, Virginia, Willliam Andrew Curtis was 74. Cremation arrangements by Valley Mortuary.


William Pailing


William P. Pailing, 73, a 13- year resident of the Kern Valley died at his home in Yuma, Arizona on July 2. He was born Sept. 21, 1917 in Greenwood, Nebraska.'


Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Elizabeth of Arizona, sons Michael of Bakersfield, Patrick of Auburn and Timothy of Los Angeles; mother Grace of Tarzana; brother James of An- chorage, Alaska; sister Jean Bergstrom of Tarzana; four grandchildren and two step grandchildren.

James Paul Butler


James Paul Butler passed away at his home in Weldon the evening of July 24. He leaves his wife, Charlotte, a daughter, Paula; two grandchildren and one great grandchild. His father and two sons preceded him in death. Paul also leaves four brothers and two sisters plus a 96-year old mother. Paul lacked six weeks of reaching his 70th birthdate. He was born in Oklahoma.


James Paul Butler, like his three brothers, all volunteered for Naval service during World War II. While serving in the Pacific, aboard his aircraft carrier, Jim sustained burns over 40 percent of his body, from enemy action. After a long recuperative period, he was discharged with a 40 percent disability. This disability forced him to ply his trade here in the warm Southern California climate. For 44 years, he operated as an independent contractor, performing his millwright pro- fession, having retired three years ago.


Opal Allen


A Memorial service was conducted Saturday, July 27 at the Lake Isabella Kingdom Hall for Opal Allen of Southlake. Of- ficiating was Mr. Russell Cox. Mrs. Allen passed away July 21 at the Anaheim Memorial Hos- pital.


She is survived by her hus- band Louis of Southlake; daugh- ter La Von Woodley, a grandchild and great-grandchildren. Mrs. Allen had been a resident of the Kern Valley for the past 11 years.

James C. Mackey


Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 10 at the Rainbow Chapel in Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier for James Clyde Mackey, 86, of Lake Isabella who passed away Aug. 7 in Arvin af- ter a brief illness. La Verne Wil- son of the Carmichael Church of Christ officiated with interment following in the Terrace of Hope.


Mr. Mackey was a native of Mulberry, Arkansas and had re- sided in Lake Isabella for the past nine years. He was a car sales- person and was last employed by Simpson Motors.


Survivors include his widow, Lela of Lake Isabella; son Jay Mackey of Lafayette, CA; daughter Sue Spencer of Long Beach; brother John Mackey of Hask, Oklahoma; sister Beatrice Wilson of Oakdale: 9 grandchil- dren, 20 great grandchildren; 19 step grandchildren, 29 great step grandchildren.

Margaret Carr


Margaret Carr passed away on July 31 at Mercy Hospital, Bakersfield after a long illness. She was 78 years old.


Mrs. Carr was born Margaret Easter Finn in Lewistown, Mon- tana on March 23, 1913 on Easter Sunday. She graduated from Long Beach Polytecnic High School and married Paul Farris Carr on June 9, 1934. Mrs. Carr was a baptised member of the Eastside Christian church in Fullerton. She and he husband lived for many years in Southern California be- fore moving to Lake Isabella in 1980. She was a member of Kaph Chapter of Golden Slipper and an amateur artist.


She is survived by her hus- band Paul: daughter Carol Berlin of Sea Ranch, CA; sons David Carr of Lake Isabella and Steven Carr of Placentia; three grand- children, Kathleen Bentley, Scott Carr and Colleen Carr.


Interment was held Aug. 5 at Rose Hills Mortuary in Whittier.


Conan D. Higginson


Mr . Higginson passed away July 28 in the San Fernando Valley. A memorial service will be held Aug. 24 in Agora, Ca.


Doyle and his wife Lois lived in Wofford Heights for more than 20 years. He is survived by his wife Lois, one son and four daughters and 11 grandchildren.

Tom Stukey was a WW 11 veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps where he served as a ground crewman with the famous "Fly- ing Tigers" in the China-Burma Theater of Operations. Mr. Stukey was retired from Rockwell Inter- national and had been a resident of the Kern Valley for the past 18 years.


Born Oct. 16, 1919 in Santa Monica, Los Angeles County, Thomas Early Stukey was 71 years of age. Interment at the Kern River Valley Cemetery. Arrangements by Valley Mortu- ary.


Albert Yaeger


A memorial service was con- ducted Friday, Aug. 16 at the Kern Valley Elks Lodge for Albert J. "Al" Yaeger of Lake Isabella. Officiating were officers of KRV Elks Lodge No 2358 BPOE.


Mr. Yaeger passed away Aug. 12 at home following illness. He is survived by his wife of 54 years Margaret of Lake Isabella; daughters Karen Ridgeway of Mojave, Janice Westphal of Gilroy, Gretchen Dougan of Yucca Valley, Susan Ickhof of Little Rock; 11 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.


Mr. Yaeger was a member of the Elks and Moose and had been a resident of the Kern Valley for the past 11 years. Born in Mattaphan, Mass., Al was 77.


Cremation arrangements by Valley Mortuary. Interment of cremated remains at Kern Valley Cemetery.

Alice Hayes


A funeral service was con- ducted Saturday, Aug. 10 at the Valley Mortuary chapel, Lake Isabella for Alice Hayes of Lake Isabella. Officiating was Rev. Deryl Lackey, pastor of the Mt. View Baptist Church of Lake Isabella. Mrs. Hayes passed away Aug. 8 at the San Joaquin Com- munity Hospital in Bakersfield.


She is preceded in death by her husband Leonard deceased 13 years ago after 41 years of mar- riage. Alice is survived by three daughters, Marlis Day of River- side, Carol Cashow of Pennsyl- vania, Lenora May of Buena Park, sisters Luclla Halseth and Delores Layton both of South Dakota; 6 grandchildren and 2 great grand- children.


Born June 23, 1917 in South Dakota, Alice Rose Hayes was 74.


Interment at the Hillcrest Me- morial park in Bakersfield. Ar- rangements by Valley Mortuary.


Dorothy Harness


A funeral service was con- ducted Thursday, Aug. 15 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel in Lake Isabella for Dorothy Harness of Bodfish. Officiating was Mr. W.M. Hetrick. Mrs. Harness passed away Aug. 11 at the Kern Valley Hospital.


She is preceded in death by husband Wayne deceased in 1979. She is survived by her son and daughter in law Larry and Christine of Lake Isabella; grandson David of Simi Valley; brothers Jimmy Thompson of Pasadena, Tommy Thompson of Idaho, Stan Thompson of Wash- ington state; sister Emily Flowers of La Crescenta, Sarah Emergell of Davis. Dorothy had been a resident of the Kern Valley for 17 years.
