Rubye Mae Shrode


A funeral service was held Thursday, April 25 at 2 p.m. at the First Church of the Nazarene in Lake Isabella for Rubye Mac Shrode of Lake Isabella. Offici- ating was Oren Ice. Interment followed Friday, April 26 at Rose Hills Whittier, CA.


Rubye was born Oct. 30, 1897 in San Marcos, Texas and died April 20 in Bakersfield. She was 93 years old. She is survived by her sons Elton Shrode of Lake Isabella; Bob Shrode of Lake Isabella; daughters Nelda Bartell of Lake Isabella, Marcella Moore of Lake Isabella; brother Tom Hacker of Chico; sisters Grace Gunstream of Washington, Zulema Kopitzki of Ontario: 12 grandchildren, 27 great grand- children and four great- great grandchildren. Rubye was a 25 year resident of the Kern Valley.


Eugenia Mary Snooks


A Mass for the repose of the soul of Eugenia Mary Snooks was celebrated Friday, April 26 at the St. Jude Parish Catholic Church. Celebrant of the mass was Mon- signor Anthony G. Herdegen, Pastor of the St. Jude Parish. Mrs. Snooks passed away April 22 at Memorial Hospital.


She is survived by her hus- band Walter of Mt. Mesa; sons Neil of Buena Park, Michael of Chino, Steven of Riverside; daughter Nancy of Los Angeles; brother Earl Cote of Michigan; sisters Doris De vore of Florida, Ruth Muir of Florida; eight grandchildren and two great- grandchildren.


Euginia Mary Snooks was a member of the grandmothers Club and had been a resident of the Kern Valley for the past 13 years. Born Oct. 5, 1919 in Massachu- setts. Mrs. Snooks was 71 years of age. Cremation arrangements of Valley Mortuary of Lake Isabella.

Homer Bradley


A funeral service was con- ducted Saturday April 20 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel Lake Isabella for Homer Bradley of Lake Isabella. Officiating was Rev. Deryl Lackey, pastor of the Mountain View Southern Baptist Church, Lake Isabella. Mr. Brad- ley passed away at home on April 17. He is survived by his wife of 47 years Maryella of Lake Isabella; daughters Kathy of Bakersfield and Judy of Gainesville, Florida; two sister, Alice Jones and Norma Kessler both reside in Derby, Kansas, Homer Bradley was a machinist who during WW II, worked for Boeing airplane company in Wichita, Kansas building bomb- ers.


Homer Bradley was a mem- ber of the Mt. View Southern Baptist Church and a resident of the Kern Valley for the past 11 years. Born April 16, 1913 in Hugo, Lincoln County, Colorado. Homer Bradley was 78 years of age.

Samuel P. Adams


A funeral service was conducted Thursday, May 2 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Mt. Mesa for Samuel Plezzie "Sam" Adams of Bodfish. Officiating were officers of the Kern River Valley Masonic Lodge No 827 with eulogy and prayers by Bishop Fred Hartwell and family members. Mr. Adams passed away April 28 at Mercy Hos- pital, Bakersfield.


He is survived by his wife of 56 years Tolbert Leah "Toby" Adams of Bodfish; sons John Robert Adams of Canyon Country, Keith Adams of Bakersfield, Samuel Jr. of Whittier, William "Bill" Adams of Lake Isabella; 17 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; brother Brady Adams of Phoenix City, Alabama; sister Goldie Lavell of Millbrook, Alabama.


Sam Adams was a well known locksmith for many years in the Kern River Valley. Operating as "Adams Locksmith", a business that is still operating by his son Bill. Prior to moving to the Kern Valley, Sam Adams worked for more than 33 years for the Southern Pacific Railway; re- tiring as a yardsmaster of the Los Neitos Rail Yard in Santa Fe Springs, moving to the Kern River Valley, he served as secretary of the KRV Golf Club for 8 years. Sam was a member of KRV Masonic Lodge No .827, the Bakersfield Scottish Rite bodies and the LDS church of Mt. Mesa. He was a WW II veteran of the U.S. Navy.


Born April 10, 1918 in Colum- bus, Muskogee County, Georgia, Samuel Plezzie Adams was 73 years of age. Internent at the Kern Valley cemetery with graveside prayers and dedication by Keith Adams and Doug England. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary.


Algier Harris


A funeral service was conducted Saturday. April 27 at the Mt. View Southern Baptist Church, Lake Isabella for Algier " Al" Harris of Lake Isabella. Officiating was Rev. Deryl Lackey, pastor. Mr. Harris passed away April 27 at the Alliance Me- morial Hospital in Bakersfield.


He is survived by his brothers Marvin of Houston, Texas, Carl of Bell Gardens, Gene of Mt. Mesa; son Craig of Wisconsin; grandsons Mat- thew and Joe of West Allis, Wiscon- sin and niece Donna Harris of Lake Isabella.


For the past nine years, Algier Harris had worked as a volunteer kitchen worker for the Kern River Valley senior nutrition program at the senior center. He received numerous awards for his more than 8,000 hours of volunteer labor. He was a member of the Mt. View Southern Baptist Church, the Sideband Club and the NRA.


Born Feb. 22, 1919 in Troup, Texas, Algier Lee Harris was 76 years old. Internent at the Kem Valley Cemetery. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary.

Mamie Lillio


A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Friday, May 3 at the St. Jude Parish Catholic Church in Wofford Heights for Mamie Lillio of Kernville. Celebrant of the Mass was Rev. Monsignor Anthony Herdegen, Pastor of the St. Jude Parish. Mrs. Lillio passed away May 1 at the Kern Valley Hospital, Mt. Mesa.


She is preceded in death by her husband Joseph deceased in 1970 and survived by her son Joseph of Granada Hills; daughters Arlene "Lee" Vradenburg of Kernville, Joanne Bramford of San Diego; 12 grand- children and 19 great-grandchildren. Mamie was a member of the St. Jude Parish Catholic church and was an active member of the St. Jude Altar Society. She had been a resident for 21 years of the Valley. Born Feb. 4, 1904 in Los Angles, Mamie Llillio was 87 years of age.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Monday, May 6 at the St. Jude Parish Catholic church for Ida Spencer of Mt. Mesa. Celebrant of the Mass was Rev. Monsignor Anthony Herdegen, Pastor of St. Jude Parish. Mrs. Spencer passed away May 2 at home following long illness.


She is survived by her husband of 23 years Ambrose W. "Spence" Spencer. Ida was retired from San Dimas Unified School District.


Born Oct. 7, 1905 in Obenhauser, Germany, Dia Koller Spencer was 85 years of age. Interment at the Hillcrest Memorial Park , Bakersfield. Ar- rangements, Valley Mortuary.


Harriett Hatlestad


A inemorial service was con- ducted Thursday, May 2 at the KRV Elks Lodge, Wofford Heights for Harriet K. Hatlestad of Wofford Heights. Mrs. Hatlestad passed away April 25 at the Pacific Regency Con- valescent Hospital, Bakersfield


She is survived by her husband Harold of Wofford Heights; sons Mike Gilman of Washington, Jame Kimpton of Corona; three grandchildren and one great grandchild.


Harriett was a registered nurse who worked at Kern Valley Hospital as chief nurse of the emergency room. She was a member of the Ladies of the Elks.


Born Dec. 4, 1916 in Canon City, Colorado, Harriet Kimpton Hatlesltad was 74 years of age. Cremation ar- rangements by Valley Mortuary.

A funeral service was conducted at the Memorial Chapel of the Golden Gate United States National Cem- etery San Bruno, California for Doris Heath of Lake Isabella. Mrs. Heath passed away April 28 at the San Joaquin Community Hospital Bakersfield. Officiating at the service was Joel Astor.


Mrs. Heath is preceded in death by her husband Master Sergeant Roy Heath deceased in 1960 and survived by her sister Lulu Morris of Lake Isabella, step daughter Pat Ross of Oregon, nephew Gene Shorb of Hiawatha, Kansas, Doris Heath was a member of the travel club known as "Loners on Wheels". She had been a resident of the Kern Valley for the past two years.

John Edward Boland


A memorial service was held Friday, May 10 at the Kern Val- ley moose Lodge in Lake Isabella for John Edward Boland, 73, of Wofford Heights. Officiating were the officers of the Moose Lodge No 498.


Mr. Boland was born Dec. 15. 1917 in Tonawanda, New York and died May 6 in Mt. Mesa. He is survived by his wife of 34 years Phyllis Boland of Wofford Heights, his sons John Wayne Boland of Buffalo, New York. Richard Prosser of Texas, daughter Carol Ely of Wofford Heights and five great grandchil- dren. Mr. Boland was a member of the Moose Lodge 498 and 11 year resident of the Kern Valley.

Donald Eugene Travers


Private services were held for Donald Eugene Travers of Weldon Mr Travers was born Dec. 5. 1927 in Hollywood, CA and died May 8 in Bakersfield. He was 63 years old.


He is survived by his son Mitchell Travers of Weldon; brother Ernest Travers of Lake Isabella. Mr. Travers was a 22 year resident of the Kern Valley.

Hans Ernest Rau


A memorial service was held Friday, May 10 for Hans Ernest Rau of Kernville. Officiating were officers of the Elks Lodge 2358. Mr. Rau was born April 3, 1910 in Germany and died May 2 in Kernville at his residence. He was 81 years old. He emigrated to this country at the age of 14 and be- came a citizen as a young adult. Hans spent 11 years in the U.S. Army, joining at the onset of WWII. His army career saw him attain the rank of Sgt. and al- lowed him many assignments as an agent of the CID, but his love was photography. He became General McArthur's staff pho- tographer and many of his photos were published in Life Magazine.


Alter he left the army in 1953. Hans became a cartographer l'or Fairchild Aerial in Los Angeles. His career spanned assignments with several surveying and engi- neering firms until his retirement from Teledyne Geotronics in Dec .. 1972.


He is survived by his former wife Barbara Kritzer of Banning, brother Henry in New York and niece Barbara Parker of Montebello. He also leaves fam- ily in Europe. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary

Mrs. Cunningham was born July 12. 1921 in Mineral Wells, Texas she was 69 years old.


She is survived by her hus- band of 52 years James Cunningham of Wofford Heights: son Curtis Cunningham of Joshua Tree, brother George Ensey of Bodfish, sisters Evelyn Baker of Washington. Private services were held for James Sharpof Wofford Heights. Mr. Sharp was born July 16, 1905 in Elk Valley Tennessee and died May 4 in Bakersfield. He was 85 years old.


He is survived by his wife Ruthof Wofford Heights son Ron Sharp of Covina, 2 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, 4 sis- ters and 1 brother of Marion. Texas.

Vivian V. Johnson


A funeral service was con- ducted Thursday May 16 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel in Lake Isabella for Vivian Johnson of Bodfish. Officiating were offic- ers of the KRV Chapter 643 Or- der of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Johnson passed away May 13 at the St. Mary's Hospital Medical Center in Long Beach.


She is preceded in death by her first husband Oscar Hansen, deceased in 1973 and second husband Melvin Johnson de- ceasedin 1982. Vivianis survived by her daughter and son in law Peggy and Jack Marks of Cypress, son and daughter in law Walter and Jackie Hansen of Missouri, grandchildren Jana and Adam Hansen, Dirk and Donna Marks, step grandchildren Susan and Daryl Johnson; sister and brother Mildred Hudson and M.D. Kite.


Vivian was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary, Bodfish Beamers, Douglas El Segundo Rod and Gun Club and Order of Eastern Star. She was retired from McDonnell Douglas Corp where she worked as a telephone op- erator for more than 30 years.


Vivian had worked as hostess for the Paradise Cove Restaurant for nearly 10 years before finally retiring.


Born Nov. 16, 1909 in Lin- coln, Nebraska, where she at- tended teacher's college, Vivian Velma Johnson was 81 years of age.


Interment at the Kern Valley where graveside eulogy and prayers were delivered by Bo Williams, Dirk Marks and Betty Costa. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary.

Francis Bernice DeGaynor


A graveside service was held Tuesday, May 14 at the Kern Valley cemetery for Francis Bernice DeGaynor of Weldon. Officiating was pastor John Car- penter of the First church of the Nazarene in Lake Isabella.


Mrs. DeGaynor was born Dec 7, 1907 in Wisconsin and died May 10 in Mt Mesa. She was 83 years old. She is survived by her friends Tom and Reba Landrum of Weldon.

James Sharp


James D. (Charlie) Sharp was born July 16, 1905 in Elk Valley, Tennessee and died on May 5 at the San Joaquin Hospital in Bakersfield.


His father homesteaded land in New Mexico in 1912, bringing his family to live in New Mexico. Charlie served a four year ap- prenticeship in machine welding with the Santa Fe Railroad Co. He later opened his own machine shop in El Monte, which turned into a 20 year business. He worked in a defense plant during WWII.


Charlie met and married Ruth Loy in 1929 and had one son Ronald.


Charlie is survived by a sister Effie Little of Fresno, Ella Glenn of Texas, Flo Murray of Home- land and Irene Stanfield of New Mexico; brother Marian Sharp, of Texas and one brother in law, Guy Oakes of La Habra and two granddaughters, a great grand- daughter and great grandson.


Charlie was a member of the Baptist Church in Lake Isabella and charter member of the Dam Dancers for 26 years. He was active until recently.

A memorial service was held Saturday, May 11 at 2 p.m. at the Valley Mortuary Chapel for Esther Thelma French of Bodfish. Officiating were the officers of the VFW Auxiliary.


Mrs. French was born Aug. 17, 1915 in Pennsylvania and died May 3 in Mt. Mesa. She was 75 years old.


She is survived by her daugh- ter Sandra Boxley of Bakersfield. Interment will be at the U.S. National Cemetery, Riverside with her husband.


Mrs. French was a 20 year resident of the Kern Valley.

Herbert Guyse


A memorial service will be conducted Wednesday, May 22 at 10 a.m at the First Baptist Church of Lake Isabella for Herbert Guyse of Lake Isabella. Officiating will be Rev. David Snow, Pastor.


Mr. Guyse passed away May 14 at home following illness.


He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Ethel of Lake Isabella; stepdaughter Janet McBride of La Mirada: sister Naomi Barrett of Los Angeles. Herb Guyse was a Master Mason and a member of the Masonic Lodge of Westchester. He was a member of the 55 plus club and First Baptist Church of Lake Isabella. During WWII, Herb served with the U.S. Marine Corps.


Born May 25, 1912 in Bill- ings, Yellowstone County. Montana, Herbert William was 78 years of age.

Mrs. Turner passed away May 15 at the Fresno Community Hospital. She is survived by sons Bill Goolsby of Georgia. Rod Claridge of Fresno. Chuck Turner of Thousand Oaks. David Turner of Camino. daughter Laurie Nicely of Linton. Indian. brothers Leroy Smith of Oregon. Richard Smith of Duncanville, Texas; sisters Kay Jones and Margaret Barnett both of Bakersfield: 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.


Blanche was a member of the Weldon Baptist Church. Born July 17. 1918 in Texas, Blanche C. Turner was 72 years of age.

Audrey. known to her friends and family as "Mic" passed away May 16 at the U.S. Veterans Administration Hospital. Prayers and eulogy were presented by Rev. Floyd Castillo, pastor of the Highland Chapel. United Meth- odist Church.


She is survived by sisters Mary Brady of Danville. PA: Gloria Davies of Santa Maria, Ca; LucilleMulligan of Wofford Heights: favorite nieces Melanie Kirk of Shady Cove, OR: Roberta Scib of Porterville; Anne Collier of Chino Hills and Mary Collier of Walnut: Godson Mark Clements of Crescent City as well as numerous other neices and nephews.

Ruben Anthony Arias


Ruben Arias passed away May 16 in Los Angeles, follow- ing a long illness. He was a 20 year resident of the Kern Valley, and a 1977 graduate of Kern Valley High School.


Born March 26, 1959 in Gardena, he was 32 years old.


Survivors include his father and mother Frank and Virginia Arias of Bodfish; daughter, Liebra Arias of Bodfish; brother Rudy Arias of Covina; sisters Celia Dominguezof Riverside, Frances Anthony of Ridgecrest, Virginia Huggins of Tehachapi. Ester Flemings of Hanford; six nieces and six nephews.

Willis"Lanky" Lankford


A funeral service was con- ducted Friday, May 31 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel in Lake Isabella for W.E. "Lanky" Lankford of Lake Isabella. Offi- ciating were officers of KR V Post 7665 Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW); with eulogy and prayers by Bishop Gordon Smith, Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints. Mr. Lankford passed away at home May 28 following illness.


He is survived by his wife Imogene of Lake Isabella; daughter and son in law Sharon and Gordon Smith of Oregon; daughter and son in law Carla and Neil Larsen of Washington; son James Lankford of Califor- nia; sister Melba Banks of Stillwater, OK; grandchildren Brittany, Garett, Morgan, Erin, Jennifer, James and Ann Marie.


Lanky was a WW II veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps who served in the South Pacific. He was retired from the Los Angeles Police Dept. after 26 years of service mainly in the Hollywood Division. Lanky was a member of the Moose, Eagles and a life member of the VFW.


He had been a resident of the Kern River Valley for the past 13 years. Born Jan. 15, 1921 in Lorena, Texas, Willis Eurskin Lankford was 70 years of age.

Robert Tucker


A memorial service was conducted Wednesday, May 29 at the Valley Chapel in Lake Isabella for Robert Tucker of Southlake. Officiating was Rev. James Lee, Pastor of the Valley Community church in Lake Isabella. Mr. Tucker passed away May 25 at the San Joaquin Community Hospital in Bakers- field. He is survived by his wife Lorena of Southlake; sons Michael Tucker of Ridgecrest, Bruce Miller of Canada, Michael Miller of Wofford Heights: daughters Nancy of Simi Valley. Valerie of Santa Barbara, Diane of Simi Valley and Laurie also of Simi Valley and 18 grandchil: dren; one brother Frank Tucker of Riverside.


Bob Tucker was a Korean War veteran of the U.S. Navy and a member of the Moose. He was a civil engineer, whose firm R.N. Tucker and Associates of Ridgecrest engineered many of the public buildings in Eastern Kern County including many of the churches.


Born May 23, 1934 in Seattle, Washington, Robert Nathan Tucker was 57 years of age. Cremation arrangements by Valley Mortuary.

Thelma Bennett


A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 29 in the Kern Valley Masonic Temple in Kernville for Thelma Bennett, 77, of Mt. Mesa, who passed away May 25 at her home. Officiating were officers of KR V chapter 643, Order of Eastern Star.


She was born Nov. 29, 1913 at Maricopa, CA where she at- tended school through high school. She attended USC and went to work for the Taft Union High School and College District, where she worked for 30 years. She met her husband Bill in 1954 in Taft and they were married Sept. 8, 1956.


She was a member and past Matron of the KRV Chapter 643, Order of the Eastern Star and a past president of Homitau Chapter, Order of Golden Slipper. She is survived by her husband Bill and four step children and their families.

Jules Arguin


A memorial service was conducted Tuesday, May 28 at the Eagles Lodge, Mt. Mesa for Jules Arguin of Southlake. Offi- ciating were officers of KRV Eagles Aerie 3156. Mr. Arguin passed away at home May 23 following illness. He is survived by his wife Denise of Southlake. brothers Maurice, Real, Claude, all of Montreal, Canada; brother Denis of El Cajon, brother Roger of Santa Ana, sister Estelle Frabisilio of Lake Isabella, mother Juliette Arguin of Montreal.


Jules was a veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces and worked as a meat cutter for the James Station Store in Southlake. Born Aug. 8, 1933 in Quebec, Canada, Jules Joseph Gean- Charles Arguin was 57 years of age. Cremation arrangements by Valley Mortuary.

Bud Adams


A memorial service was conducted Tuesday June 4 at the KRV Elks Lodge, Wofford Heights for Theodore Pershing "Bud" Adams of Wofford Heights. Officiating were offic- ers of KRV Elks Lodge 2358 BPOE. Mr. Adams passed away May 31 at Kern Valley Hospital. Mt. Mesa. He is survived by his sister Helen Gonnella of Wofford Heights and brother Morris Adams of Kissamec, Florida.


Born Dec. 1, 1918 in St. Louis, Missouri, Theodore "Bud" Adams was 72 years of age.

Elizabeth (Liz) Anna Crowder


Graveside service was held Friday, June 7 at Kern Valley Cemetery for Elizabeth Anna Crowder. 76, who passed away June 3. Jerry Ruff, pastor of the Foursquare Family Life Church officiated.


Elizabeth was born March 25. 1915 in Bakersfield to William and Adeline (Petersen) Fugitt, carly Kern Valley pioneering families. She attended grade school at Isabella and graduated from Bakersfield High School.


Elizabeth's life was spent caring for her family and many friends who were alone or ill. Her love for her entire family was always in her heart without the necessity of words, as was the love of her family for her. Bingo was one of her favorite past times and she spent many hours en- joying it with friends.
