She was a charter member of Kern River Valley Chapter Order of the Eastern Star and Yod Chapter, Order of Golden Slipper.


Louise is survived by her daughter Ida Reed, daughter in law Toni McCartney, four grand daughters Janet Skaggs, Louise Handyshell, Nancy Coates and Robin McCartney, grandson Ernie McCartney Jr. and 8 great grandchildren. Service was held Thursday, Fcb. 28 at the cemetery.

FERN KITE


A funeral service was con- ducted Wednesday March 6, 1991 at the Committal Chapel of the Kern River Valley Chapel of the Kern River Valley Cemetery, Wofford Heights for Fern Bernice Kite of Auburn, formerly of Wofford Heights. MRS. Kite passed away Feb. 27 at the Au- burn Faith Hospital, Auburn, Placer County, CA.


She is preceded in death by her husband Milford Dean Kite deceased 1987 and by her son Billy Dean Kite deceased 1975.


Fern is survived by her daughter Betty Helman and hus- band Byron of Cool, CA; daugh- ter Suzanne Kuhl and husband Chuck of La Mirada; seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Fern had resided in the Kern Valley since 1974 and had only recently moved to Northern California. Her husband Milford will be remembered by amateur radio operators. His call sign was K6GYF.


Fern was born Aug. 27, 1913 in Nebraska. She was 77 years of age. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary of Lake Isabella.


O.E. "NICK" NICHOLSON


A funeral service was con- ducted Friday, March 1 at the United States National Cemetery Riverside for Otis E. "Nick" Nicholson of Lake Isabella. Offi- ciating were officers of Ameri- can Legion Arcadia Post 247.


Mr. Nicholson passed away Feb. 24 at Kern Valley Hospital.


He is survived by his wife of 41 years Velma of Lake Isabella, brother in law Drew Blankenship of Lake Elsinore.


Mr. Nicholson was retired from U.S. Postal Service. During WW II, he served with the U.S. Navy as ship's cook aboard the USS landing craft 480 and 407. He had resided in the Kern River Valley for the past 11 years. Born Feb. 6, 1908, in Washington County, Kentucky, Otis Eugene Nicholson was 83 years of age.

WILLIAM GREER


William Greer of Weldon passed away March 4 at the San Joaquin Community Hospital in Bakersfield. He is survived by his wife Dot of Weldon, children Lee Kenneth Greer of Vacaville, Sheila Rush of Vacaville, Ilene Kott of Evansville, Indiana, Pamela Irwin of El Dorado, Illi- nois, Loretta Jones Hughson, Linda Huber of Little Rock, Ar- kansas, 1 I grandchildren and five great grandchildren.


Mr. Greer was a WW II vet- eran of the U.S. Army who served with the infantry in the Asiatic- Pacific Region. He had been a resident for past 11 years. Born Feb. 6, 1916 in Fordsville, Ohio County, Kentucky, William Lewis Greer was 75 years of age.

AGATHA DEE THROOP


Graveside services were held Friday, March 1 at Hillcrest Me- morial Park for Agatha Dee Throop, former long time resi- dent of Lake Isabella. Officiating was Rev. Bud Frye.


Mrs. Throop was born March 16, 1905 in Moberly, Missouri and passed away Feb. 24, in Whittier, after a long illness. She was 85 years of age.


Mrs. Throop had lived the last nearly eight years of her life at the home of her daughter and son in law, Beverly and Russell Shatto in Hacienda Heights.


She was preceded in death by two children, Melvin and Lois Throop and her husband, Everett Arthur Throop, deceased June, 25, 1970.


She is survived by her six children, daughter Anita Adams and her husband Paul of Bodfish; Marilyn Rahm and her husband Frank of Bodfish; Beverly Shatto and her husband Russell of Haci- enda Heights; and Dee Huckelberry and her husband Country of Weldon; also two sons, Roger Throop of Colton and Gary Throop of Bakersfield. She is also survived by brothers Lowell White and Marvin White; a sister Florence Dexyter and numerous nieces and nephews and cous- ins, 16 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and one great great grandchidren.


Dee and her husband Everett moved to Lake Isabella in the mid 60s fom Compton. They spent manyweeks and weekends camped at Paradise Cove, their favorite campsite around the lake.

ERNEST ALBERT MOSS


A funeral service was con- ducted Tuesday March 5 at the Family Life Center of the Four- square Gospel Church Wofford Heights for Ernest Moss of Bodfish. Officiating was Rev. Jerry Ruff, pastor. Mr. Moss passed away Feb. 28 at Kern Valley Hospital.


He is survived by his wife of 45 years Jean of Bodfish; sons Don of Bakersfield; Mike of Bodfish; daughters Pat Hardin of Bakersfield, Barbara Barnes of San Luis Obispo; sister Betty Alvarez of Bullhead City, Ari- zona and 11 grandchildren.


Ernie Moss retired from the United States Air Force with the rank of Chief Master Sergeant whose service from 1942 to 1967 spanned three wars: WW II, Ko- rea and Viet Nam.


Ernie had been a resident of the Kern River Valley for the past 24 years. He was a member of KRV VFW Post 7665.


Born Oct. 13, 1923 in Cleburne, Johnson Country, Texas, Ernest Moss was 67 years of age. Interment at the Kern River Valley Cemetery where MILITARY honors were rendered by officers of VFW Post 7665. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary.

Marietta H. Cote


A memorial service was con- ducted March 15 at the Highland Chapel United Methodist Church for Marietta Cote of Bodfish. Officiating was Rev. Floyd Castillo, pastor. Mrs. Cote passed away March 10 at home follow- ing illness.


She is survived by her hus- band of 54 years, Charles of Bodfish; daughter Carol Burkey of Bodfish; son Ted of West Hol- lywood, grandchildren Melissa, Mark and Allyson; and great grandchild Kyle.

Margaret Shinneman


Margaret Shinneman, a long time resident of Kernville and owner of Shinny's Bait and Tackle Shop, passed away March 1 at the age of 92.


There will be no services. The burial will be in Old Kernville Cemetery.


She is survived by daughter Orpha Jean Stalvey; son Wm. B. Shinneman and grandson Roger B. Shinneman.

A funeral service was con- ducted Monday, March 11 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel for James W. Ingram of Mt. Mesa. Officiating were officers of KRV VFW Post 7665. Mr. Ingram passed away March 7 at the Kern Valley Hospital.


He is survived by his wife, Elvira of Mt. Mesa; son John of Colorado; daughters Patricia Jenkins of Gridley, Juanita Ingram of Selma; brothers Floyd, Francis, Dolan and Robert all of Northern California and three grandchildren.


Mr. Ingram was a WW II vet- eran of the U.S. Army who served with the combat engineers in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. He was a life member of Canoga Park VFW Post 2805, a member of the Moose, Eagles and American Legion, Jim Ingram had been a resident of the Kern River Valley since 1984.


Born Nov. 14, 1918, in Ballhill, Okmulgee County, Oklahoma, James William "Jim" Ingram was 72 years of age.

Paul Hill, Sr.


A memorial service was held on Thursday, March 14 at the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Lake Isabella for Paul Hill Sr. of Lake Isabella.


Born Sept. 9, 1919 in Tulsa, OK, Mr. Hill passed away at home on March 10 at the age of 71 years.


Mr. Hill served with the U.S. Army, Rainbow Division and was a Veteran of World War II's Battle of the Bulge. He worked as a real estate broker in the South Bay region of L.A. County. After weekending in the area for many years, the Hills retired and moved into the area on a permanent basis in 1971.


Mr. Hill is survived by his wife of 49 years Sue Carolyn; sons Paul Jr. of Lake Isabella; Henry of Inglewood; daughter Dianna Rolleg of El Paso, TX: sister Ruth Coger of Salina, OK, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Douglas R. Giles


Douglas R. Giles of Kemville passed away March 21 at the Kern Valley Hospital in Mt. Mesa. He is preceded in death by his wife Joann deceased 1989 and sur- vived by son David of Michigan; daughters Brenda of North Hol- lywood; son Mark of Palmdale; daughter Gloria of Michigan; son Dave of Canyon Country; brother Bruce of Michigan; granddaugh- ter Krystal of Canyon Country; grandson Richie of Canyon Country.


Douglas Giles was a Univer- sity graduate in Michigan and a member of the Elks and Moose. He was a retired engineer who had worked in both the automo- tive and aerospace industries. Born March 14, 1927 in Michi- gan, Douglas Ray Giles was 64 years of age.

Burt A. Hutchison


Burt Hutchison passed away Saturday, March 16 at Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield.


Mr. Hutchison was born July 23, 1915 in Covina and was a resident of Kern River Valley for 40 years with his wife of 52 years, Ola Hutchison. Burt was em- ployed with the U.S. Forest Ser- vice for 25 years.


He was the fire control officer for the Cannell Meadow District for 18 years before he retired . Burt was a Mason as well as a member of the Lions Club.


Survivors include his wife Ola Hutchison of Lake Isabella; son Duane and wife Rory of Bodfish. and two grandchildren Roy Hutchison of Bakersfield and Cindy Hunt of Lake Isabella.


Eula Mae Fitzgerald


A funeral service and formal visitation were conducted Satur- day, March 23 at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Hollywood Hills for Eula Mae Fitzgerald of Lake Isabella. Officiating were officers of Eagles Auxiliary of Van Nuys Aerie 2310.


Mrs. Fitzgerald passed away March 21 at the Kern Valley Hospital. She is survived by her daughter Jane and son in law Carl Gordon of Lake Isabella; three grandchildren and four great- grandchildren. Eula held the of- fice of State mother of Eagles and was a charter member of the Van Nuys Aerie Auxiliary. Locally, Eula was a member of the Grandmothers Club.


Born Feb. 2, 1900 in Okla- homa, Eula Mae Fitzgerald was 91.

George L. Brown, Jr.


A funeral service was con- ducted Friday, March 22 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel for George L. Brown, Jr. of Des Moines, Iowa. Officiating was Rev. Floyd Castillo, pastor of the Highland Chapel United Meth- odist Church, Lake Isabella. Mr. Brown passed away March 17 at Des Moines Methodist Medical Center.


He is survived by father George Brown, Sr. of Baldwin Park; mother Norma Corlis of Bodfish; stepfather Robert Corlis of Bodfish; brother Ken Brown of Riverside; grandmother Claris Lacourse of California.


George Brown, Jr. was born Dec. 25, 1946 in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa. He was 44 years of age.

A funeral service was held Thursday, March 21 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel for Claris Norma Esterbrook of Lake Isabella. Officiating was Rev Louis Fabrizius, pastor of the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran church of Lake Isabella.


Mrs. Esterbrook passed away March 14 at the San Joaquin Community Hospital, Bakers- field. She is survived by her sis- ters Ruth Johason and Agnes D'Entremont both of San Jacinto. Mrs. Esterbrook had been a resi- dent of the Kern Valley for the past 18 years.


Born May 6, 1917 in South Dakota, C'laris Norma Esterbrook was 73 years of age. Interment at the Kern Valley Cemetery. Ar- rangements by Valley Mortuary.


Mark L. Mershon


Mark Mershon of Bodfish passed away March 25 at the emergency room at Kern Valley Hospital after suffering from a cardiac arrhythmia at home.


He is survived by his parents William and Pauline Mershon of Bodfish; brother David of Bodfish and aunt Harriet Hunter of Ohio.


Mark was raised in Redondo Beach and had moved with his family to the Kern Valley a year ago. He was a graduate of Redondo Beach schools and had trained as a gunsmith. Mark loved the outdoors including hunting and fishing; he was planning to open a gunsmithing shop in the valley.


Born July 13, 1958 in Tor- rance, CA, Mark Leslie Mershon was 32 years of age.

Irwin C. Burkhart


A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, April 3 at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Kernville for Irwin Burkhart of Kernville. Officiating will be Pastor John Revis. Mr. Burkhart passed away March 26 at the Sutter Memorial Hospital, Sac- ramento.


He is survived by his wife of 53 years Alice of Kernville; son Robert of Kernville; daughter Carol Logsdon of Kernville; stepsons Clyde Cole of Reseda, Bert Alton of Bakersfield; sister Elizabeth of Texas; six grand- children and three great grand- children. Irwin Burkart was a building contractor for many years and built numerous homes and buildings throughout the state.


Born Nov. 11, 1915 in Butler, TX, near the Oklahoma-Texas line, Irwin Clyde Burkhart was 75 years of age. Interment at Kern Valley Cemetery. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary.

A memorial service was conducted Friday, March 29 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel Lake Isabella for Claude Baker of Lake Isabella. Officiating was Rev John Revis, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Kernville.


Mr. Baker passed away March 24 at home following illness. He is survived by his wife of 53 years Clara of Lake Isabella; sons Art of Florida, Lloyd of Chatsworth, Carl of El Paso, Texas; daughter Ethel Baker of Thousand Oaks, daughter Elizabeth Chavez of Bakersfield; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.


Born April 30, 1913 in Bayfield, Colorado, Claude Dal- las Baker was 77 years of age. Cremation arrangements by Valley Mortuary. Interment of cremated remains at Greenlawn Cemetery Bakersfield.


Chester Charlton


Chester (Chet) Charlton died at home in Kernville on March 23. He was born July 7, 1922 in Marion, Virginia and retired from the Naval Weapons Center, China Lake in 1974.


Chet was active in commu- nity affairs, conservation organi- zations both local and national. He took part in the formation of the Kern Valley Hospital Foun- dation and served as a board member of that body.


Chet is survived by his wife, Lorna; son Chester Scott Charlton of Santa Cruz, CA; daughters Sue Ellen Charlton of Fresno and Margaret Pedroni of Mendocino County; grandsons Benjamin Charlton Pedroni and Jesse Alan Charlton; brothers Brainard, Thomas and Robert Charlton of Virginia.


Chet will be missed by family members and friends in Missouri, Virginia and California and other states.


Memorial services will be held Saturday, April 20 at 11:30 a.m. at the Kernville United Methodist Church, at the corner of Sirretta Street and Big Blue Road. A buffet luncheon will follow.

Clarence Brown


A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Tuesday, April 2 at the St. Jude parish Catholic Church for Clarence George Brown of Wofford Heights. Cel- ebrant of the Mass was Rev. Monsignor Anthony G. Herdegen, Pastor of St. Jude Parish. Mr. Brown passed away March 30 at the Kern Valley Hospital, Mt. Mesa.


He is survived by his wife Lois of Wofford Heights; son David of Malibu; daughter Sha- ron Markarian of Palmdale; mother Agnes Brown of Irvine; brothers William "Bill" Brown of Wofford Heights, Kenneth Brown of Lake Tahoe; sister Mary Giraldin of Irvine, and grand- children.


Clarence Brown was a WW II veteran of the U.S. Navy who served aboard the destroyers USS Willses (DD441) and USS Higbee (DD896) in the Pacific and Eastern Mediterranean, during his military service Clarence Brown earned five Bronze battle stars. Here in the Kern River Valley,, Clarence was a member of the VFW KRV Post 7665 and was formerly a manager of the Elks Lodge.


Born March 23, 1922 in Bal- timore, Maryland, Clarence George Brown was 69 years of age. Interment at the Kern River Valley Cemetery. Graveside blessing and prayers by Monsi- gnor Herdegen. Military honors by officers and members of VFW Post 7665. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary.

Edward Boyer


A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Monday, April 8 at the St. Jude Parish Catholic Church for Edward Boyer of Southlake. Celebrant of the Mass was Rev. Monsignor Anthony Herdegen, Pastor of St. Jude Parish. Mr. Boyer passed away April 4 at the Kern Valley Hos- pital.


He is survived by his wife of 53 years Isabell of Southlake; sons Robert of Hermosa Beach, Ed- ward, Jr. of Spokane, WA; brothers Robert and Thomas both of Pennsylvania; sisters Florence and Rosella also of Pennsylvania; 11 grandchildren and 10 great- grandchildren.


Eddie Boyer was a WW II veteran of the U.S. Army who served in the infantry during the European invasion. He was wounded in combat in France following the Normandy Land- ings. Eddie came to California from his native Pennsylvania in 1944,


Eddie Boyer was a life member of the DAV and a member of VFW he had held officer posts with Chapter 54 Kern River Valley Disabled American Veterans. Born April 15, 1915 in Scottdale, Pennsylvania, Edward Joseph Boyer was 75

Altha M. Shaw


A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Saturday, April 13 at the St. Jude Parish Catholic church for Altha M. Shaw of Havilah. Celebrant of the Mass was Rev. Monsignor Anthony Herdegen, pastor of St. Jude Parish.


Mrs. Shaw passed away April 8 at a Bakersfield hospital.


She is preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Ross, deceased in 1978 and survived by her sister Betty Jane Browser and brother Howard Douglas both of Detroit and friend Velma Allard of Bodifsh.


Altha Shaw was a member of the St. Jude Parish Catholic church and had been a resident of Havilah for 25 years.


Born July 27, 1901 in Detroit, Michigan. Altha Marie Shaw was 89 years of age.

Kenneth Torres


A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Wednesday April 10 at the St. Jude Parish Catholic Church for Kenneth Torres of Mt. Mesa. Celebrant of the Mass was Monsignor John Esquivel, Pastor of St. Joseph's Church, Bakersfield.


Mr. Torres passed away April 7 at Kern Valley Hospital, fol- lowing illness. He is survived by his mother Beckie of Mt. Mesa; grandparents Frank and Lupe Figueroa of Mt. Mesa; brother Bobby of Redondo Beach. Rich- ard of Mt. Mesa; uncles Frank Figueroa, Jr. of Mt. Mesa and Greg Figueroa of Lake Isabella.

Patrick Chatelle


A Mass for the Repose of the soul of Patrick J. Chatelle was celebrated Saturday, April 20 at the St. Jude Parish Catholic Church. Celebrant of the mass was Rev. Monsignor Anthony Herdegen, Pastor of the St. Jude Parish.


Mr. Chatelle passed away April 12 at home in Lake Isabella.


He is preceded in death by his wife Madeline, deceased in 1980. Madeline Curtis serving with the U.S. Air Force 62nd Military Airlift Wing at McChord AFB Tacoma, WA; and Irene Ferraro of Torrance; more than 30 grandchildren and many great grandchildren; his beloved niece Dawn Buono of Seneca, NY; his nephew Eddie Chatelle and his wife of Victoria, British Columbia and friends Bob Krause and Bill Wilson.


Patrick Chatelle was retired from Hughes Aircraft after 23 years. He was a volunteer in the Meals on Wheels program. Back in Montreal, Canada, he played hockey for his high school.


Born Feb. 28, 1916, in Montreal, Canada, Patrick Joseph Chatelle was 75 years.


Stuart Lehman


A funeral service was con- ducted graveside at the Kern Val- ley Cemetery for Stuart Lehman of Lake Isabella. Officiating were officers and members of VFW KRV Post 7665, KRV Chapter 54 of the Disabled American Veterans and Post 711 of the American Legion of the Kern Valley. Mr. Lehman passed away April 17 at the U.S. Veterans Hospital in Fresno after a long illness.


He is preceded in death by his wife Esther deceased in 1978 and survived by his stepson Donald Brown and wife Dorothy of Lake Isabella and grandson Donald.


Stuart Lehman was a U.S. Navy veteran of both WW I and WW II. He had held officer posts in all of the Veteran organiza- tions of the Kern Valley includ- ing American Veterans of WWI, now inactive due to the loss of members due to age. It is believed that Stuart Lehman was the last surviving member of that organi- zation.


Beulah M. Sandberg


Beulah Sandberg of Wofford Heights passed away at home on April 5.


She is preceded in death by her husband Kenneth Sandberg deceased in 1967 and survived by her daughters Louise McIntyre of Wofford Heights, Wanda Lynch of Merriam, Kansas, Shirley Herrick of Littleton, Colorado; sister Evelyn Ward of Alexandria, Louisiana; brother Raphael; 13 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.


Beulah Sandberg was retired from the U.S. Civil Service and had worked for the U.S. Army Hospital at Fort Logan, Colorado. She had been a resident of the Kern Valley for the past 12 years.


Born Nov. 6, 1903 in Arnaudville, Louisiana, Beulah Marcelene Sandberg was 87 years of age.

OBITUARY


Lawrence Beach


A funeral service was con- ducted Thursday, April 25 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel for Lawrence "Larry" Beach of Bodfish. Officiating were chap- lains of the U.S. Navy China Lake, KRV Post 7665 and DAV chap- ter 54. Mr. Beach passed away April 22 at the Kern Valley Hos- pital, Mt. Mesa.


He is survived by his wife of 45 years Pauline Beach; daughter Sherry Lynn Goodrich and hus- band Charles of Montana; daughter Kathy Ann Bauch of Texas; granddaughters Christine, Jenny and Kimberly.


Larry Beach was retired after nearly 30 years of active duty with the U.S. Navy "Seabees". He served during WW II, Korea and two tours of duty in Vietnam. Larry Beach was a Mason and a member of the Masonic Blue Lodge, the Lake Isabella Shrine Club. He was a member of the Kern Valley Search and Rescue where he held the rank of Lieu- tenant. Larry was also a member of St. John the Baptist Lodge No. 12.
