Joseph (Joe) Ulman


A funeral service was con- ducted Saturday, June 16 at San Fernando Mission Cemetery in Mission Hills for Joseph Ulman of Onyx. Officiating was Father Sevino.


Mr. Ulman was born Sept. 26, 1907 in Brownsville, Penn- sylvania and died June 12 in Onyx. He was 82 years old.


Mr. Ulman is survived by Mary, his wife of 59 years; daughter Shirley Spusta of Palmdale; son Ronald of Reno, NV; grandsons Marc DiFiglia of Livermore, CA, Christopher DiFiglia of Phoenix, AZ and Erik Ulman of Encinitas, CA; four great · granddaughters; five sisters and two brothers.

Elmer Bond


A funeral service was con- ducted Tuesday June 26 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel for Elmer G. Bond, 84, of Bodfish. Of- ficiating was Rev. Charles Smith, pastor of the United Methodist Church, Weldon. Mr. Bond pass- ed away June 23 at Memorial Hospital.


Elmer is preceded in death by his wife, Lila deceased in 1978 and survived by his stepson Ray Vega of Bodfish; sister Elizabeth Gleaton of Porterville; nephew Gary Gleaton of Texas, great nephew Jason Gleaton of Texas; grandchildren Viki and Laurel Vega, both of Alaska.


Elmer was born April 2, 1906, in Porterville, Tulare County, the son of George Bond and Mattie Guinn Bond an old California family. Elmer was retired from So. Cal. Edison, where he work- ed in the hydro plants along the Kern River for more than 20 years. He had been a resident of the Kern Valley for the past 61 years will be missed by all who knew him.

George W. Herring


Funeral services were held for George Herring on July 3 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel with in- terment at the Kern River Valley Cemetery. Officiating was the Rev. Fred Baker of Kernville United Methodist Church.


George was born Nov. 1, 1902 to Clarence and Mary Herring at Comfrey, Minn, was married to Junita Jonnum in 1933 was an 18 year resident of the valley and died on June 30.


He is survived by his wife Junita; sister Carol of Onamia, Mn; brothers Roy and wife Millie and Adolph and wife Irma of N.D., and sister-in-law Ethel Jon- num of Downey. He is also sur- vived by nieces, Janet Herring Sirotiak of Minneapolis, Brenda Herring Schilling of N.D., Betty Carlson of MN and Gail Shannon of Lancaster; nephews Richard, Joel, and Rex of N.D., Jeff of Oregon, Roland, Jerome and Stephen of CA and more than a dozen grand nieces and nephews, many dear friends. Two brothers preceded him in death.


Samual W. Howard


Samual Howard died July 5 in Levitown, PA, following a long il- Iness. He lived in Southlake for several years.


He was preceded in death by his wife Irene, deceased July, 1989. He is survived by his daughter Norma Morder of Levitown; son Mark Howard of Encino, CA; son Mitchell of Canoga park; brother George Howard of Lufkin, TX; sister Robbye Martin of Fayettesville, TN, Pattye Rasberry of Mill- ington, TN; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.

A funeral service was con- ducted Friday, July 6 at the Com- mittal Chapel of the U.S. National Cemetery, Riverside for Pauline "Polly" Jordan of Wofford Heights. Officiating was Rev. Lance Tyler, chaplin of the U.S. Veterans Administration Hospital, Loma Linda. Pauline passed away July 2 at the Alliance Community Hospital in Oildale.


She is survived by her son Larry Thompson of California; granddaughter Tracy Michelle Thompson of San Diego; brother Edward Cotton, Jr. of Weldon; two sisters Edna Watkins and Betty Jean Jazaway both oif Douglasville, Georgia.


Pauline Jordan was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Navy who served in the Navy nurses corps in Virginia, Texas and aboard hospital ships in the Pacific.


Born March 26, 1923 in Cleveland County, Alabama, Pauline Cotton Jordan was 67 years old. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary.

Harold St. John


Harold A. St. John, 74, of Wof- ford Heights, passed away July 8 at the Kern Valley Hospital in Mt. Mesa.


He is survived by his wife of 42 years Janet of Wofford Heights; son Mark Andrew St. John of Denver, Colorado; brother William of Ishpeming, Michigan; sister Grace Holman of Owosso, Michigan, sister in law Virginia Raymond of Weldon, sister Margaret Henkel of Canoga Park; aunt Viola Cornish of Naples, Florida.


Harold St. John was born in Ishpeming, Michigan, Dec. 1, 1915 the son of William and Tru Mae St. John. Harold's father was a municipal court judge. Harold attended Michigan State University in East Lansing. Shortly after his graduation, WW II started and Harold enlisted in the U.S. Army. He spend most of the war as a captain and officer in charge of the Army depot at Scoffield in Hawaii. Harold St. John was a member of TROA - the Retired Officers Association, National Forestry Assoc., and the Knights of Pythias in Ishpeming.

Coy Langston


A funeral service was held at Westminster Memorial Park in Westminster on July 6.


She resided in South Lake and was born March 30, 1930 in Texas. Coy is survived by her husband Robert; daughter Janice; two sons Gary and Dennis; a step- daughter Tamera and step gran- children Calvin; stepson Robert; mother Neta Waldrep whom resides in Garden Grove.


She is also survived by four brothers; three sisters; nine grandchidlren; 26 nieces and nephews. Coy was laid to rest beside her youngest son, David.


Verna Natelle Jessen


A memorial service was held June 28 at the Hope Chapel in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Cypress for Verna Natelle Jessen.


Mrs. Jessen is survived by her daughters Marylyn Ely, Barbara Gale; sons Dennis Horner, Herbert Jessen, Thomas Jessen and 26 grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.


Marko "Mike" Malahni


Marko P. "Mike" Malahni passed away July 9 at Beverly Manor Health Center in Ridgecrest.


Mike was a WW II veteran and retired captain of the Los Angeles City Fire Department and a member of the Local 13 of the ILWU.


He was born Jan. 3, 1926 in San Pedro. He moved to Kernville in 1974. He is survived by his wife Birdie and daughter Donna Jackson of Kernville; daughter and son-in-law Jonni and Ron Bruno of Camarillo, daughter Jean Alison of Laguna Niguel. He also leaves 2 brothers, John and Gus of San Pedro and a sister, Agnes of Huntington Beach and seven grandchildren.


In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Los Angeles City Fire Department Widows, Orphans and Disabled Fireman's Fund.

Larry Drinkwine


A funeral service was conducted Wednesday, July 18 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel Lake Isabella for Lawrence Clayton "Larry" Drinkwine of Lake Isabella. Of- ficiating was Rev. Jack Dilley, pastor of the Kern Valley Bible Church.


Mr. Drinkwine passed away at the Kern Valley Hospital after a sudden illness at home.


He is survived by his friend Lil- ly Vietch of Lake Isabella; nieces Florence Pace, Grace Butler, Margaret Corman, Dorothy Miller, nephews Clayton, Bill, David and Ben Drinkwine.


Larry Drinkwater moved to the Kern Valley 25 years ago from Long Beach with his late wife Della. Larry was an avid fisher- man and fished the lake every day that wind and weather per- mitted. He made and sold his own lures and weights. He was known for his garden products, garlic, red onions, eggs, etc. which he grew in his garden, then gave to his friends and neighbors.


Born Oct. 9, 1907 in Idaho, Lawrence Drinkwine was 82. In- terment at the Kern River Valley Cemetery. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary.


Berl E. (Buck) Pennington


Funeral services were held Ju- ly 5 at the Evans Brown Mor- tuary in Sun City, with Reverend Art Sobery officiating.' Intern- ment followed at the Riverside National Cemetery with full military honors.


Colonel Pennington is survived by his wife Mary; three sons; four daughters; nine grandsons; five granddaughters; and two great grandchildren.


The Penningtons resided in Bodfish Canyon Meadows. from 1978 to May, 1989, when they mov- ed to Temecula.


Colonel Berl Pennington retired from the United States Air Force in Nov., 1960. He was later employed by the Northrop Corp. until 1978, when he and his family moved from Westminster to the Kern Valley.


Col. Buck Pennington passed away June 30 at the Palomar Memorial Hospital in Escondido.


Friends may make memorial donations to the American Cancer Society.


Leonard Roe


A memorial will be conducted Wednesday, July 25 at 11 a.m. at the VFW Post 7665 Lake Isabella for Leonard Roe of Bodfish. Of- ficiating will be officers of the KRV Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7665 and Auxillay. Mr. Roe passed away July 15 at Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield.


He is survived by his wife of 26 years Alice of Bodfish; sons Jef- frey, Donald, Ronald, and Dar- rell all of California; daughter Jenny Waters of California and mother Laura Roe of California. He is also survived by nine grandchilren.


Leonard Roe was a WW II veteran o the U.S. Army Air Corps who served with the 66th fighter squadron in the Asiatic- Pacific. He was a member of the Moose and the VFW.


Leonard Roe was born Sept. 1, 1927 in Hammond, Indiana, and was 62 years of age.

Mildred Menning


Mildred V. Menning, wife of Thomas Menning of Wofford Heights died July 31 at her son Robert's home in Lakewood.


Mildred was born Nov. 13, 1915 in El Paso, Texas. She spent her formative years in Columbus, Ohio. After her high school graduation, she went to work for the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington, D.C. Upon the outbreak of World War II, she transferred to Hickman Field in Honolulu, Hawaii, where she worked until 1949. She met her husband Tom there and in 1950 they were married in San Bernardino. They resided there until Tom retired in 1975 when they relocated to Wofford Heights.


For the past 15 years, she was ac- tive in the Kern Valley Art Associa- tion, holding several offices, including the presidency. She was a member of the Wofford Heights TOPS and held several officer positions. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Kernville.


She Is survived by her husband Tom of Wofford Heights, sons Tom Jr. of La Quinta; and Robert of Lakewood; daughter Cathy of San Bernardino.


The family requests that in lieu of flowers and cards, donations be made in her name to the Kernville United Methodist Church memorial fund.


John W. Heatherly


John Heatherly of Wofford Heights passed away July 21 at the Kern Valley Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 56 years Joann of Wofford Heights; daughter and son in law San- dra and Lee Reese of Torrance; granddaughter Christina Reese of Torrance.


John Heatherly was a member of the Kern Valley Elks Lodge and had been a resident of the Kern Valley for the past 20 years. He was retired from Garrett Corp. Air Research.


Born Oct. 25, 1911 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, John William Heatherly was 78 years.

James Armstrong


Graveside services were held at the Green Hills Cemetery in San Pedro on July 12 for James Newton Armstrong.


Mr. Armstrong was born in Stonewall, Oklahoma on Feb. 9, 1896 and died July 9 at St. Mary's Hospital.


He lived with his wife in the Kern Valley from 1973 to 1985. He attended the First Church of the Nazarene and was a World War I veteran. He belonged to the American Legion.


He was preceded in death by his daughter Frances Montgomery in Feb. 1983; his wife, Barbara Arm- strong in Sept., 1984. He is survived by his daughter Betty Westwood of South Lake; two sisters Mable Clarkson of Corvallis, Oregon and Elsie Clements of Alberta, Canada. He had four grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and three great, great grandchildren.


Molly Weber


A funeral service was conducted Monday, July 23 at the Valley Mor- tuary Chapel in Lake Isabella for La Moille Viola "Molly" Weber of Lake Isabella. Officiating was pastor Floyd Castillo of the Highland Chapel United Methodist Church of Lake Isabella.


Mrs. Weber passed away July 19 in a Bakersfield hospital. She is surviv- ed by her husband of 63 years Russell of Lake Isabella; three children, Laurine, Bonnie and Bob; nine grand- children and 12 great-grandchild; she is also survived by two sisters, Mary Ensign and Edith Bunting both of Ohio.


Born Nov. 13, 1905 in Bryan, Ohio, Molly Weber was 84 years of age. In- terment at the Kern Valley Cemetery. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary.

A funeral service was conducted Tuesday, Aug. 7 at the Kern Valley Cemetery for Evelyn Deming of Kernville. Officiating was Father David Graham, former vicar of the St. Peter's Episcopal Church of Kernville.


Mrs. Deming passed away Aug. 1 at Kern Valley Hospital. She is surviv- ed by her sons Michael David Dem- ing of Texas, Robert Deming of Granada Hills; granddaughters Hol- ly Denise Deming and Stephanie Col- leen Deming: niece Pat Vehlewald of Kernville; sister and brother-in-law Ruth and Bill Banta of Kernville.


Mrs. Deming is preceded in death by husband Horace Deming deceas- ed in 1953. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star of Van Nuys, and St. Peter's Episcopal Church.


Born Aprü 12, 1911 in Bellingham, Washington, Evelyn Myrtle Deming was 79.

Earl Leroy Ladd


A funeral service was held August 13 at 2 p.m. at the Valley Mortuary chapel in Lake Isabella for Earl Leroy Ladd of Mt. Mesa.


Officiating was Bishop Fred Hartwell of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Mt. Mesa. Interment followed at the Kern River Valley Cemetery In Wofford Heights.


Earl Leroy Ladd was born Oc- tober 31, 1917 in Modesto, CA and died August 11 in Bakersfield. He was 72 years old.


He is survived by his wife of 52 years LaVon Ladd of Mt. Mesa, son Leroy Ladd of Mt., Mesa, brother Walter Ladd


of Mariposa, sister Ruby Mize of California, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.


Ladd was a 24-year resident of the Kern River Valley and he and his wife LaVon were the former owners of the River View trailer park in Kernville. Earl also founded the Ladd Ready Mix Ce- ment company in Weldon, which his son Leroy operates today.

Louis Paul


A private family memorial ser- vice will be conducted for Louis Paul of Lake Isabella who pass- ed away Aug. 3 at the Pacific Regency Hospital in Arvin.


Mr. Paul is survived by his sons Tim and Lloyd of Idaho, Ed- die of Los Angeles, Vincent of Las Vegas; daughter Geraldine of Ceres, CA; 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Louis Paul was a member of the Moose and had been a resident of the Kern Valley for nearly 33 years.


Born April 14, 1913 in Pro- vidence, Rhode Island, Louis Ed- ward "Louie" Paul was 77 years old.

Emma Steele


A funeral service was con- ducted Wednesday, Aug. 8 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel for Em- ma A. Steele of Kernville. Of- ficiating was Father David Graham, Vicar, (retired) of the St. Peter's Episcopal Church of Kernville. Mrs. Steele passed away Aug. 3 at Kern Valley Hospital.


She is preceded in death by her husband J. Edward "Ed" Steele deceased in 1982 and survived by her son and daughter in law Paul and Dagmar Steele of San Mateo; daughter Nancy Clements of Kernville; grand- sons Ryan Steele, Michael Clements and Eric Clements.


Emma Steele was a registered nurse who trained In her home state of Louisiana and worked in Louisiana, Mississippi and for the public health service Indian health agency in Arizona.


In California, she developed and was chief surgical nurse of the surgical facilities of the St. Joseph's Hospital of Orange. After retiring to the Kern Valley more than 15 years ago, Emma Steele elected to join the Peace Corps as a volunteer serving in Forteleza, Northern Brazil where her highly trained nursing skills helped to upgrade the health of the primitive people of that region.


Born Feb. 1, 1911 in Jackson Parish, Louisiana,. Emma Adeline Steele was 79 years of age. Interment at the Kern Valley Cemetery. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary.


Patricia Farmer


Former Kern Valley resident Patricia J. Timmer Farmer, 42, died at 10:40 a.m., Tuesday, Ju- ly 24 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, Indiana.


She was born September 3, 1947, in Princeton, Ind. Farmer lived and was employed in California for several years.


Farmer was a member of the Hazelton United Methodist Church, American Legion Post no. 25 and Eagles Auxiliary of Princeton, Ind., and the Moose Auxiliary of Mt. Carmel, Illinois.


Surviving are her husband Bill Farmer, a son Matthew Timmer and a daughter Tiffany Timmer, both of Dixon, California, her mother Edith Pearl Hurt, step- father Bill Hurt, sister Johnette Briody of Lake Isabella, sister Nancie Balley of Vacaville, CA. Two half brothers Scott and Tim Riley of Illinois and one half sister of Ft. Benning, GA, and a great-grandmother, Helen Riley. She is also survived by an aunt, Margaret Benepe, formerly of Lake Isabella.


Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. at Colvin Funeral Home in Princeton, Ind. with Reverend Edward Gardner. Burial was in Shiloh Cemetery near Hazelton.


Farmer has been ill with cancer for two years, and will be sadly missed by the family and children.

Milton G. Patterson


A private graveside service was held at Kern River Valley Cemetery for Milton G. "Pat" Patterson who passed away August 8 in Bakersfield. Reverend Fred Baker, minister of the Kernville United Methodist Church officiated. .


Patterson was born in New Kirk, Oklahoma on January 30, 1902 and was 88 years old.


He is survived by his wife Lucille of Bakersfield, his daughters and sons-in-law Doris and Wayne Requa and JoAnn and Richard Rolfe of Kernville, his grandson and wife Dan and Don- na Requa of San Juan Capistrano, his granddaughter and husband Christine and Sam Vullo of Huntington Beach, three great-grandsons, John Vullo, Tommy Rolfe and Cory Requa and two great-granddaughters JoAnn Vullo and Kelsey Requa.


He was preceded in death by his grandson Tom Rolfe in 1983.


Glynn Littlefield, Sr.

He is survived by his son Glynn, Jr. of Kent, Washington; brother Staton Littlefield of Kern- ville and three grandchildren.


Glynn Littlefield was & member of the Eagles and had resIded in the Kern Valley for the past six years.


Born July 3, 1920 in Bebe, Texas, Glynn Gray Littlefield was 70 years of age.

She is survived by her husband of 21 years Steven of Squirrel Valley; daughters Sandi Torell of Lake Isabella, Cathy Jean Guy of North Hollywood, Sherri Robin Eisenger of Burbank; brothers Gene Valentine, Lee Valentine both of California and two grandchildren.

Mrs. Roller passsed away Aug. 16 in Mt. Mesa. She is survived by her husband John of Mt. Mesa; sister Myrtle Remlinger of Ohio; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Ralph Marsh of Bodfish passed away August 6 at the Kern Valley Hospital in Mt. Mesa.


He is survived by his wife Zelda of Bodfish, six sons, Jay of La Habra, Dean of Rancho Palos Verdes, Del of Long Beach, Ken- neth of Torrance, Mike of Hun- tington Beach, Randy of Lindsay, daughter Carole of West Covina, brother Glen of Hemet, brother John of Torrance, nephew Harold Marsh of Gardena, 17 grand- children and seven great- grandchildren.


Marsh was a member of the Elks Lodge in Compton. Born Oct. 17, 1902 in Perry, Iowa, Ralph Francis Marsh was 87 years old.

Benjamin Parsons


A graveside funeral service was conducted Friday, Aug. 17 at the Kern River Valley Cemetery for Benjamin H. Parsons of Kern- ville. Officiating was Reverend David Snow, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Lake Isabella.


Parsons passed away August 12 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, West Los Angeles. He is survived by his wife Shirley Jean of Kernville, son Ben of Santa Barbara, daughters Charlotte Meisel of Atherton, Kathy Sartain of Tar- zana, four grandchildren and sister Mary Lou Smith of Evansville, Indiana.


Benjamin Parsons was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy. Born May 29, 1927 in Mon- tgomery, Indiana, Benjamin Harold Parsons was 63 years of age. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary.

Irene V. Mitchell of Kennedy Meadows passsed away Aug. 17 at Kern Valley Hospital, Mt. Mesa.


She is survived by her daughter Delores Malony of Las Vegas; son Michael Sullivan of Granada Hills, friend Gene Lovell of Ken- nedy Meadows and grandchildren.


Born Feb. 16, 1908 in Arizona, Irene Velma Mitchell was 82 years .of age. Cremation ar- rangements by Valley Mortuary.

Jimmie Annabelle Embree


Jimmie Annabelle "Ann" Em- bree of Lake Isabella passed away Aug. 9 at the San Joaquin Community Hospital, Bakersfield. A memorial service was conducted Aug. 13.


Mrs. Embree is survived by her husband of 48 years Quinton of Lake Isabella; sons Jimmie of Ridgecrest, Stanley of Arizona; daughter Sue Jensen of Los Angeles; sister Helen Wilder of Porterville; sister Jean Wallace of Vislia; 8 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mrs. Embree was member of the St. Jude Parish Catholic Church Alta Society.


Born Nov. 8, 1921 in Rogersville, Missouri, Jimmie Annabelle Embree was 68 years old.

Mary Armstrong of Lake Isabella passed away Aug. 17 at the Kern Valley Hospital.


She is survived by her son Elwyn of Caliente.

John W. Carnathan, Jr.


A funeral service was con- ducted graveside at the Kern River Valley cemetery's old sec- tion for John "Jack" Carnathan of Bodfish. Officiating was Rev. Francis Edge, Pastor of the Pentecostal Lighthouse. Mr. Carnathan passed away Aug. 30 at the Kern Valley Hospital.


He is preceded in death by his wife Ruth and son Mark Wayne. Mr. Carnathan is survived by his son John W. Carnathan III, of Lancaster; daughter Judy Jacobsen of Bodfish; sister Mary Baker of Reno; grandchildren Carl and Deann of the Kern Valley; John, Katy and Danielle of Lancaster and one great- grandson Thomas of Lake Isabella.
